Chapter 39 You know best, don’t you?
Xie Xiaohua grew more and more animated as she spoke, as if she had witnessed it all herself. “Look at her, all dressed up and flaunting herself—she must be walking around the village all day, who knows how many men she’s been flirting with.”
The more Xie Yu heard, the darker his expression became. His eyes fixed on Xie Xiaohua with unprecedented disappointment.
“Bang!” Xie Yu slammed his fist on the table, his voice icy cold. “Xie Xiaohua, that’s enough! Do you even know you’re slandering someone?! Don’t you understand how important a young woman’s reputation is?”
He had originally thought that his elder brother’s second daughter was just a careless talker. Getting fired from the supply and marketing cooperative should have been a lesson for her. But now it seemed she wasn’t just careless with her words—she was simply bad, selfish, and self-centered.
Xie Xiaohua was startled by Xie Yu’s sudden anger and trembled all over. She had never seen him this furious before. Even sitting beside him, the overwhelming pressure made it hard to breathe.
Her face instantly went pale, sweat beads forming thick on her forehead. “Uncle… I… I…” she stammered.
Xie Yu gave her a disdainful glance, then toned down his aura. Only then did Xie Xiaohua catch her breath, feeling like she had narrowly escaped a disaster. She instinctively scooted sideways, about to speak again, but then caught sight of his paralyzed legs.
Suddenly, she came to her senses. What was she so afraid of? Xie Yu was paralyzed! What could he do to her? She only wanted him to help get her job back. If he refused, fine. But he had even taken the side of an outsider—hmph!
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got, and her earlier fear subsided a bit.
“Uncle, it was clearly Chang Suixi who messed up my job. Why are you taking her side?” She lifted her head and stared directly at Xie Yu, her eyes questioning.
Xie Yu sneered lightly, “Xie Xiaohua, think carefully about what you’ve done. You know better than anyone who I’m siding with, don’t you?”
His expression was as cold as frost, his sharp eyes piercing straight through her like he could see everything.
A flicker of panic flashed in Xie Xiaohua’s eyes. She felt inexplicably guilty, as if Xie Yu knew all her secrets…
She opened her mouth to argue further, but when she met Xie Yu’s dark, piercing gaze, the words stuck in her throat. She decided to go talk with her mother first and figure out how to convince Xie Yu to get her job back.
As for Chang Suixi, as long as she was in Hongqi Village, she wouldn’t let her have a good time!
With that thought, Xie Xiaohua stood up and said, “Alright, Uncle, I’ll come see you another day. I just got back and haven’t even been home yet. I’ll be leaving now.”
Without waiting for Xie Yu to say anything, she pushed open the door and ran off.
Xie Yu frowned more deeply as he watched her leave.
“Uncle…” Suddenly, a timid voice came from the doorway.
Xie Yu turned and saw Xie Liye by the window. Seeing his expression, Xie Liye had an ominous feeling.
Trying to stay calm, Xie Yu asked, “What is it? Did something happen with Chang Zhiying?”
Xie Liye hurried in, saying, “Uncle, my mother went to cause trouble with Chang Zhiying. They’re trying to force her to marry you, and now… now they’re probably fighting…”
When he came, his mother wanted to tear Chang Suixi’s mouth apart. They were probably already grappling with each other.
He had seen Xie Xiaohua at the door earlier, so he hadn’t dared to come in, and he didn’t know how Chang Zhiying was doing.
Xie Yu’s face instantly turned icy cold, his fists clenched tightly until the knuckles turned pale. “Where are they now?”
He had clearly instructed Qian Weimin to secretly protect Chang Suixi. How was this protection going?
Xie Liye was frightened by Xie Yu’s imposing aura and trembled as he stammered, “Th-they should still be in the fields. When I ran back just now… they were still there…”
At this, Xie Yu’s brows knitted into a knot. “Go get the wheelchair. We’re going to the fields now!”
Surprise flashed in Xie Liye’s eyes. He hadn’t expected Xie Yu to want to go out. Since being brought back to the village, Xie Yu hadn’t left the house once. Being proud and not wanting others to pity his disability, Xie Yu rarely went out.
Now, he was willing to go out for Chang Zhiying! Xie Liye thought his uncle must really care about her!
He quickly went to get the wheelchair. Just as he pushed it beside the bed, a commotion came from the door.
“Brother Xie?” Qian Weimin came rushing back. When he entered, he saw Xie Yu looking grim and clutching the blanket as if trying to get out of bed.
He froze at the door and asked, “Brother Xie, where are you going?”
“My aunt got beaten up. I’m going to back her up!” Xie Liye blurted out without thinking.
Qian Weimin was a tall man, the new scorekeeper in the village, but he had heard from his father that this man was a comrade of Xie Yu’s. So he didn’t treat him like an outsider.
Xie Yu’s mouth twitched, about to explain, but Qian Weimin said, “Your sister-in-law got into trouble? No way! I just came from her place, and she’s perfectly fine.”
Xie Yu was speechless. They really spoke so casually?
But hearing that Chang Suixi was unharmed, he finally relaxed and sat back down on the bed.
He waved to Xie Liye, “Liye, go to the fields and help Chang Zhiying weed. I have something to discuss with you and Qian Ge.”
“Got it! I’ll go help Auntie right away!”
“You don’t need to—” Xie Yu started to say, but Xie Liye had already dashed off.
Rubbing his temples, a vein throbbed at Xie Yu’s forehead. “So, how’s the situation?”
Qian Weimin grinned, “Heh heh, with me on the job, it’s done perfectly!”
He then recounted how he had kept an eye on Chang Meili and immediately informed the village head when he found out she was fooling around with Xie Jianguo.
“Now they’ve been caught by the village head, so Xie Jianguo definitely won’t marry Chang Zhiying anymore.”
Qian Weimin paused, then continued, “But Chang Zhiying already broke off the engagement with Zhao Zhiying. If news about the broken engagement spreads and people know Xie Jianguo’s replacement fiancé… and that she also broke off the engagement, it might hurt Chang Zhiying’s reputation too…”
