Chapter 140: Watching a Movie
Shen Sangyu was almost scared to death by Cao Ruyue’s words.
She coughed twice in succession and looked at Cao Ruyue in disbelief, her eyes full of fear.
However, Cao Ruyue seemed not to notice her reaction and continued worriedly, “You and Captain Wen have been married for a year and a half.
Logically, you should be thinking about having a child.
Could it be that… Captain Wen can’t have a baby?”
“Cough cough cough cough!”
Shen Sangyu coughed loudly and waved her hands quickly. “Sister Cao, what you just said is really too scary.”
Cao Ruyue was shocked to realize that she had voiced her thoughts, and her face changed instantly.
Fortunately, she felt relieved when she saw that Shen Sangyu was not upset.
She whispered, “I didn’t mean to imply anything bad. But you see, Captain Wen is already 29 years old practically an old man.
If you’re not in a hurry to have a child, he might want one as a man.”
Shen Sangyu’s face flushed.
Could it be that she was going to tell Cao Ruyue that she and Wen Qingchuan were just chatting under the quilt?
This was certainly not something she wanted to share with Cao Ruyue.
After some thought, Shen Sangyu found an excuse: “I’m still young, and I have to go to school.
There are no elderly people at home, and I’m not comfortable hiring a nanny. I can’t abandon my studies for a child, right?”
In fact, not many people valued academic studies during these times, and Cao Ruyue was one of them.
But she understood what to say and what not to say.
So, Cao Ruyue didn’t press the issue further.
Shen Sangyu knew what Cao Ruyue was thinking but didn’t clarify anything. It was best for both parties to maintain this understanding.
Once back at the family compound, Shen Sangyu and Cao Ruyue parted ways.
The house felt a little deserted, so Shen Sangyu took out all the items she purchased that day.
This year, she bought a couplet, which was written by an elderly man outside the supply and marketing cooperative. The brush calligraphy on the red paper looked majestic.
She wanted to hang this couplet with Wen Qingchuan.
When Wen Qingchuan came home, Shen Sangyu was busy making paste.
The couplets nowadays weren’t as varied as they would be decades later. She took some glutinous rice from Cao Ruyue and mixed it into paste for hanging the couplet on the door.
“Wen Qingchuan, you’re back just in time.”
Shen Sangyu asked, holding the couplet in her hand, “Shall we hang it up together?”
Wen Qingchuan took off his coat, revealing his strong arms despite the winter chill. “Come down; I’ll hang it.”
Shen Sangyu stepped on a stool, feeling a bit unsteady, which made Wen Qingchuan nervous.
Even though he didn’t voice his concern, his actions spoke volumes as he gently lifted Shen Sangyu down with both hands.
“Then I’ll watch you do it.”
“Yeah.”
Wen Qingchuan’s eyes focused intently as he aligned the couplets perfectly, and Shen Sangyu didn’t need to make any corrections.
“It’s a pity we don’t have any smoked bacon this year.”
Most of the previous year had been spent in various places and hospitals, leaving no time to prepare smoked bacon.
Last year’s bacon had been consumed long ago.
“I’ll ask other military wives if they have extra food at home, and we can buy some for New Year’s,” said Wen Qingchuan.
In fact, as long as they were willing to provide tickets and money, there was nothing that couldn’t be purchased.
However, if something was missing, it always felt like the New Year wasn’t complete.
Wen Qingchuan thought for a moment and said, “Let’s do these things together next year.”
Shen Sangyu naturally agreed.
Although this year was not perfect, it was also their first New Year together.
On New Year’s Eve, most people in the military region had an early holiday. Though it was only half a day, they cherished it, especially since they didn’t have much time off throughout the year.
Wen Qingchuan went to the vegetable market to buy vegetables and meat as soon as he came back.
Many soldiers in the military region could not go home or spend time with their families.
Shen Sangyu and Wen Qingchuan were also two lonely people, so after thinking about it, Shen Sangyu decided to invite the soldiers from Wen Qingchuan’s team to her house to celebrate the New Year together.
Everyone was deeply moved by this and followed Wen Qingchuan to the vegetable market after the holiday.
After buying the ingredients, Shen Sangyu wanted to help, but no one would let her.
“Sister-in-law, just sit there and read a book. We can handle these things ourselves,” one soldier insisted.
Shen Sangyu knew that she had no talent for cooking.
“Then take me with you when you make dumplings,” she replied.
The soldiers agreed enthusiastically.
But for Shen Sangyu, who was a kitchen disaster, everything about cooking seemed more difficult than studying airplanes.
Other people’s dumplings turned out beautifully and neatly, while her dumplings were ugly and misshapen.
The gap between people was always so vast.
Shen Sangyu felt a little discouraged.
After New Year’s Eve, Wen Qingchuan had to return to training, but the festive atmosphere lingered.
Although they trained every day, it did not dampen everyone’s enthusiasm for the New Year.
On the day Wen Qingchuan had a day off, he took Shen Xu’s advice and bought two movie tickets.
There had always been movie theaters in the city, but many had been damaged due to previous policies.
However, since liberation, various films had started to flourish again.
A ticket cost only ten cents, which was nothing for Wen Qingchuan, but he had never understood the appeal of movies.
He thought it was better to save money than to go to the movies. When Shen Xu learned about this, he scolded Wen Qingchuan, saying that it was thanks to Sangyu that he was lucky; otherwise, he would remain a bachelor for life.
“What do girls like most?” Shen Xu had asked. “No matter when, they love to feel beautiful, buy things, and watch movies.
It doesn’t matter if the movie is good or not; as long as there is someone to accompany them, the movie is bound to be good.”
Wen Qingchuan bought two movie tickets, albeit with some doubt. It was for a film recommended by Shen Xu, who claimed it was the hottest movie at the time.
Sure enough, Shen Sangyu was stunned when she saw the movie tickets Wen Qingchuan handed to her.
She looked at him in disbelief and asked hesitantly, “Did you buy this?”
Wen Qingchuan nodded earnestly. “Well, Shen Xu said that you little girls like to watch it.”
Shen Sangyu: “…”
If she didn’t know Wen Qingchuan’s temperament, she would have been angry by now.
Wen Qingchuan had always been very frugal in life, and the most money he spent was on her. Aside from necessary daily expenses, he rarely indulged himself.
Movie tickets were not cheap for ordinary people, and the most significant thing was that Wen Qingchuan was willing to listen to others and invite her to watch a movie something Shen Sangyu had never anticipated.
“Then do you have time?” she asked, though she felt it was a futile question since Wen Qingchuan was handing over the tickets.
“I’m on vacation this weekend, and I’ve got the note approved.”
Feeling that everything was prepared, Shen Sangyu felt warmth swell in her heart.
“Okay.”
Wen Qingchuan had never been to a movie theater, and this was Shen Sangyu’s first time visiting such a simple cinema.
It was just that she rarely went to theaters in her previous life. Back then, she was too busy with work, and the technology abroad was too advanced, or she was working hard every day to catch up with others.
Watching a movie in such a leisurely and elegant manner felt too luxurious for Shen Sangyu.
The film Wen Qingchuan chose was a romantic movie, but after watching it, Shen Sangyu realized one thing: compared to the love stories in her previous life, these films were simply pure love!
Shen Sangyu’s eyes lit up, and she suddenly saw a business opportunity emerge from it.
