Chapter 16: Rumors
The translation agency doesn’t open until nine o’clock. Shen Sangyu was afraid of being late on her first day, so she arrived early.
When she arrived at the translation agency, it was still closed.
It was almost nine o’clock when a man in a suit opened the door with a bunch of keys.
After opening the door, he noticed Shen Sangyu, looked her up and down, and asked, “Are you a newcomer?”
Shen Sangyu didn’t wear a cashmere coat like before. Although the coat looked good, it was a bit hard to withstand the winter in Beijing.
Today she wore a white cotton jacket with a black base and a long skirt.
This outfit stood out in the gray crowd, making it hard for the man not to notice her.
Seeing Shen Sangyu nod, the man immediately smiled and said, “Hello, my name is Mao Jie, and I am the president of the translation agency. Director Xu is my uncle, and he recommended you to me.”
Shen Sangyu didn’t expect the boss to be so young. He looked only about thirty-five or thirty-six years old.
“But Director Xu said you are his friend.”
Mao Jie was stunned for a moment, then laughed: “Uncle Xu, if you insist on saying that, we are close friends regardless of age.”
Mao Jie was very talkative, and Shen Sangyu learned that the reason Xu Weiguo did not ask Mao Jie to translate that day was that he was out of town and could not get back.
There were only four people in the translation agency, including Mao Jie and her; the other two were not in the office because they were translating manuscripts at home.
Shen Sangyu was surprised: “Can you translate at home?”
Mao Jie nodded: “My translation agency is not so strict. After all, the homes of the other two employees are quite far away.
How troublesome is it to go back and forth? As long as the translation manuscripts are submitted within the specified time, it will be fine.”
Shen Sangyu felt a surge of joy.
She wanted to make money and do scientific research after the college entrance examination.
But if she had to work while preparing for the exam, even if she was confident, it would be very challenging.
However, if she could work from home, wouldn’t all her problems be solved?
Mao Jie, seeing that Shen Sangyu was a bit far from the translation agency, added: “I will come to work every day.
If you choose to translate at home, you only need to come here once every two weeks… If you have something to do, just ask someone to bring me a message.”
Mao Jie trusted the person recommended by Xu Weiguo very much.
Especially after learning that Shen Sangyu had helped Xu Weiguo and Qian Shenghua twice in a row.
Shen Sangyu followed Mao Jie into the office.
The translation agency was about 60 to 70 square meters, surrounded by bookshelves, and in the middle was a desk with several tables piled up.
Mao Jie said, “These are all books left by my father before he died. If you want to read them, you can borrow them, as long as you don’t damage them.”
Shen Sangyu could see that Mao Jie treasured these books, so she nodded in appreciation.
Mao Jie took out two thick manuscripts from the desk: “These are what you have to translate, and you need to complete them within three months.”
The timeline was indeed tight.
Translation isn’t just about directly translating words; it involves understanding context and expressing it appropriately, which requires considerable writing skills from the translator.
However, Shen Sangyu glanced at the thickness and confidently said, “No problem.” Mao Jie felt relieved.
Shen Sangyu decided to stay in the office today to begin translating the text.
The translation agency primarily publishes Chinese and English books.
Now, as people’s minds are slowly being liberated, topics that were once considered banned books are starting to emerge.
Shen Sangyu translated quickly, working from nine in the morning until three-thirty in the afternoon.
Except for breaks to eat and go to the restroom, she was focused solely on her work.
Mao Jie noticed that Shen Sangyu hadn’t even come to consult with him, so he walked over curiously to take a look.
After flipping through a few pages, his eyes widened in shock: “Comrade Sangyu, your translation is outstanding!”
Generally speaking, translated articles go through a review process. Mao Jie, having grown up in a family with advanced ideas and learning bilingualism since childhood, was very experienced in translation.
But after reading Shen Sangyu’s work, he felt that even if he translated it himself, it would not compare to the quality of her translation.
Mao Jie’s face flushed with excitement: “Comrade Sangyu, if you keep up this level, I will give you a raise!”
Shen Sangyu: !!!
This boss is better and easier to talk to than the previous sponsors!
The two chatted about the translation content for a while, and Mao Jie admired Shen Sangyu more and more.
Shen Sangyu glanced at the big clock at the door of the office and said, “It’s getting late, boss, I’m going back first.”
Mao Jie was still a little reluctant, but thinking that there would be another chance, he nodded.
Shen Sangyu went to Qian Shenghua to buy one meat and one vegetable, and this time she spent less money.
However, on the way back to the family compound, Shen Sangyu suddenly felt that many people were looking at her, and some people even pointed at her.
Although she was curious about what these people were talking about, she didn’t go up to catch people and ask what happened.
As soon as she reached the door of the family compound, Shen Sangyu was stopped by Cao Ruyue.
Cao Ruyue first glanced at her, then at Shen Sangyu, and took a deep breath: “Sister Sangyu, sister has something to tell you.”
Feeling that Cao Ruyue’s tone was a little serious, Shen Sangyu nodded.
She stood at the door of the family compound and said politely: “Sister, please speak.”
Cao Ruyue was still a little surprised to feel Shen Sangyu’s politeness again, but when she thought of something, she suddenly said earnestly:
“Sangyu, sister asks you, did you have a quarrel with Captain Wen, or did Captain Wen make you angry in some way?”
Shen Sangyu didn’t understand.
These days, Wen Qingchuan went out early and came back late, and she didn’t say anything to Wen Qingchuan.
The daily communication was almost limited to the dinner table.
Thinking of the fact that some military wives pointed fingers at her when she came back today, Shen Sangyu narrowed her eyes.
Could it be that someone said something?
She thought so and asked so.
Sure enough, Cao Ruyue nodded, her face very ugly.
“These days, there are rumors with details. One moment you quarreled with Captain Wen, and the next moment you got off a rich middle-aged man’s car, and said…”
Cao Ruyue paused, and looked at the dishes packed back in Shen Sangyu’s hand.
Shen Sangyu laughed angrily.
“Some people also say that I eat delicious food and drink spicy drinks every day?”
Cao Ruyue stopped talking.
Shen Sangyu’s eyes were cold, as if they could turn into a sharp sword to kill people in the next second.
The original owner offended many people, but because of Zhou Xinghua’s matter, now everyone’s discussion object has become Zhou Xinghua.
I have been busy looking for a job and preparing for the college entrance examination these days.
Who spread the rumors?
Suddenly, a figure emerged from her mind.
The fingers quickly closed, and Shen Sangyu was full of anger.
She looked at Cao Ruyue and said gratefully: “Thank you sister for telling me. Wen Qingchuan and I have no conflict.
It’s just that the matter is a little complicated. I am not sure who did it yet. Please help me keep an eye out these few days to see if there are any clues.”
Cao Ruyue nodded quickly.
After thinking for a while, she said: “Captain Wen also got the news today and has returned home now.”
After that, Cao Ruyue was a little worried: “If you have something to say, talk to Captain Wen nicely and don’t quarrel with others.”
Shen Sangyu was stunned for a moment. She didn’t expect that Wen Qingchuan had returned today.
She nodded and went upstairs quickly.
As soon as she entered the door, she heard Zhou Xinghua’s gentle voice: “Brother Qingchuan, sister Sangyu is still immature, you must not blame her.”
