Chapter 11: The Weasel Wishing the Chicken a Happy New Year
Ignoring Xiao Huaishu’s probing gaze, Xu Muzhou calmly sat back in his original position.
The atmosphere was a bit awkward, so Xiao Qingru simply went into the kitchen to help.
“When did you become so considerate?” Xiao Huaishu squeezed out a few words through clenched teeth, “Don’t bully our Qingru.”
Xu Muzhou only responded to the first half of the statement, “I’ve always been considerate, didn’t you know?”
“I see you like a weasel wishing a chicken a happy new year.”
Covering the smile at the corner of his mouth with a sip of water, he replied, “If you think that way, I can’t help it.”
“Tsk tsk tsk, listen to what you’re saying you’re really black hearted.”
“Ahem, you’re overthinking it.”
Xiao Huaishu felt something was off with his brother but couldn’t pinpoint what it was.
After all, this guy was always considerate, even bringing gifts the first time he came to dinner.
The little incident just now didn’t seem significant enough to say much.
He was originally going to take over his sister’s tasks it was just that Xu Muzhou had jumped the gun.
He gazed at Xu Muzhou, “Just don’t let me catch you with any dirt on you.”
Xu Muzhou tensed his back, “Watch your words what do you mean by ‘dirt’?”
Xiao Huaishu shot him a look, and everything was left unsaid.
Xiao Qingru brought out the dumplings, and Xu Muzhou perceptively went to help, “Let us men handle this our skin is tough and won’t burn easily.”
“Little Xu is such a good kid, unlike our smelly brat, who acts like a lord.”
Xiao Huaishu’s mouth twitched at being called out wasn’t he just entertaining guests?
Otherwise, he would have helped out sooner.
“Mom, since you dislike me so much, why not let Xu Muzhou be your son instead?”
“Sure, I have no objections. I heard Little Xu flies planes the best having a son like that would be a great honor. I’d be thrilled!”
Xiao Huaishu: “…”
Didn’t anyone care about his feelings?
Xu Muzhou’s earlobes turned red, and he discreetly glanced at Xiao Qingru.
“If I have no relatives here, then if you don’t mind, I can be your son.”
Xiao’s mother laughed, “I’ve just gained a son for free I’ve struck it rich.”
Xiao Huaishu gritted his teeth, “I’m still here it’s not fair to bully me like this.”
At this point, Xiao’s father returned, saw Xu Muzhou standing at attention and saluting, and patted his shoulder, “Relax at home we’re all family.”
“Yes, Uncle.”
Xiao’s mother shook her head helplessly as soon as Lao Xiao came home, the atmosphere changed.
“Sit down the food is ready.”
On the table was a stewed chicken with a shiny, golden broth, looking delicious and sure to whet the appetite.
Besides that, there was a steamed fish and several large plates of dumplings.
“Eat up there’s more in the kitchen. You can have as much as you want today.”
“Aunt, your cooking is really good it looks even better than the state run restaurants.”
“Well, you must eat more then.”
“Definitely, please don’t mind if I eat a lot.”
“Young people should eat more to stay healthy. You train hard every day, so you shouldn’t be stingy with food.”
“You’re right after all, health is the foundation of revolution.”
Xiao Qingru had initially felt a bit intimidated by Xu Muzhou, but seeing him more talkative than she expected made her relax a bit.
“Comrade Xu, I really appreciate you taking me to the hospital that day. Let me toast you with tea instead of wine.”
Xu Muzhou got nervous and almost bit his tongue.
He quickly picked up his cup, “It was just a small favor you don’t need to take it to heart, Comrade Xiao.”
“This is a lifesaving favor how can you brush it off so lightly?” Xiao Qingru teased with a smile.
Xiao Qingru was beautiful, and when she smiled, shallow dimples appeared, her big bright eyes and flawless features complemented her graceful demeanor from dancing.
Her charming smile was the most captivating, making one want to bring the best things in the world to her.
From the first time they met, watching her shine on stage, Xu Muzhou knew he was smitten.
Now, as Xiao Qingru smiled at him, Xu Muzhou thought that not only would he take her to the hospital, but he would willingly risk his life for her.
The two cups clinked together, and they each took a sip of tea.
“Here, have some food.”
“This dumpling was made by Qingru she also prepared the filling herself. You guys should eat more to give the young lady some face.”
“Rare! I’ve lived for over twenty years and this is the first time I’ve eaten dumplings made by my little sister.”
He nudged Xu Muzhou’s arm, “Looks like I’m benefiting from you today.”
Xiao Qingru didn’t cook often and lacked confidence in her skills, “If there’s anything I need to improve on, just let me know so I can make them better next time.”
The dumplings were perfectly sized for a hearty bite.
“They’re really good.”
“Comrade Xu, you should eat more.”
As she spoke, she scooped a few more dumplings into Xu Muzhou’s bowl with her spoon.
Throughout, Xiao Qingru wore a gentle smile as long as her lifesaver was satisfied with the food, she felt at ease.
Little did she know that such a simple gesture had a profound impact on the man.
His heart raced so fast that Xu Muzhou suspected it might leap out of his throat any second.
Fortunately, his self control was strong enough to keep his expression natural.
Unlike his previous visit to the Xiao family, this time, it seemed Qingru was actually noticing him.
