Chapter 25: Wanting Xu Muzhou as a Son in law

In the evening, Xiao’s mother brought up the topic of Xu Muzhou and Xiao Qingru to her husband.

“If young Xu really has feelings for our daughter, I think that would be a good thing.”

Mr. Xiao had his own thoughts and didn’t immediately agree with his wife.

“Xu’s a good person, but if our daughter marries him, she might have to endure some hardships.”

“Hardships? Do you think his family’s financial situation isn’t good enough? I heard from our son that they’re a dual income family, which is already pretty decent.”

“Do you think that’s what I mean?”

Mrs. Xiao pressed on, “Then what do you mean?”

“I’m worried she’ll end up on the same path as you, going through the same hardships you did.”

“Then why did you allow her engagement to Jiang Chuan back then?”

Mr. Xiao was at a loss for words. “Didn’t they like each other? I couldn’t just break them up, could I?”

When he was younger, Mr. Xiao was often away from home because of his work, and he always felt guilty toward his wife.

If possible, he’d want his daughter to marry someone ordinary, someone with whom she could live a peaceful and smooth life. Yet, when it came to the idea of her marrying someone ordinary, he found it hard to accept.

Only an outstanding, ambitious young man was truly deserving of his daughter.

Mr. Xiao felt torn.

Even though her husband’s words weren’t very clear, Mrs. Xiao understood what he meant.

She smiled. “What I went through can hardly be called hardship. Times are tough for everyone now some people can’t even afford enough food and clothing. Ever since I married you, I haven’t suffered at all.”

Mr. Xiao smiled, too. “Let’s wait and see. Qingru may not even like him.”

“Right, let’s take it slow. Qingru’s still young there’s no rush to marry her off.”

This wasn’t something to rush. Although Mrs. Xiao thought Xu Muzhou was a fine young man, she didn’t plan on pushing him and her daughter together.

Romantic relationships should develop naturally between the young people. If someone intervened, it would change things.

It was best to play it as if they didn’t know anything and just wait to see how it would turn out.

“Young Xu is a lot better than Jiang Chuan. I, for one, wouldn’t mind him as a son in law.”

Mr. Xiao clicked his tongue. “There’s nothing between them yet, so stop calling him son in law already.”

“Our daughter will get married one day, so you’d better get used to it. And don’t start thinking about making things hard for young Xu.”

Mr. Xiao: “…”

How did she see right through him without him saying a word?

“I’m busy all day long. Where would I find the time to make things hard for him? Don’t overthink it.”

“It had better be that way.”

After getting ready for bed, Mrs. Xiao took out the Snow Cream her daughter had bought for her. “Look, our daughter got this for me. I haven’t even finished the last jar yet.”

“She bought it for you, so use it. Don’t save it.”

Mrs. Xiao nodded. “Everyone envies us for having such a sweet daughter. She even used to send things to the Jiang family. Looking back, it’s like feeding a dog. Ever since things happened, they haven’t visited Qingru even once.”

“Enough already. She did those things willingly and never expected anything in return. Let’s just each go our own way now and not interfere with each other.”

She understood, but when it involved her own daughter, Mrs. Xiao still felt it was unfair.

Qingru had been nothing but good to Jiang Chuan and to his parents.

People even joked that she was already treating Jiang’s parents like her future in laws.

Mrs. Xiao sighed. Genuine care doesn’t always get repaid in kind it depends on the people involved.

“Let’s sleep. Stop dwelling on it.”

Thinking about the Jiang family would only keep her up all night.

Turning off the light, the Xiao family’s little courtyard settled into peaceful slumber.

Even on vacation, Xiao Qingru didn’t forget her responsibilities.

Every morning, she would get up and practice basic skills for two hours, then listen to the radio to stay informed on current events.

She’d help with household chores, then spend her remaining time either with Song Yuan or rehearsing her dance.

It was supposed to be a break, but she was busier than ever.

“With this level of dedication, you’re sure to win an award at the cultural performance.”

“Stop complimenting me! I’m afraid I’ll get a big head.”

Song Yuan smiled slyly. “Honestly, you look amazing when you dance. I bet loads of guys in the military secretly have a crush on you.”

Xiao Qingru coughed, “Really? I haven’t seen anyone confessing their feelings.”

“Oh, so if someone confesses, you’d consider it?”

“I’d think about it.”

“Get out! Back in school, there were guys chasing after you, but you were faster than a rabbit, never even giving them a chance.”

“Well, I’m single now, so things are different.”

Song Yuan sighed internally. Why don’t some men have the same self awareness?

They already have fiancées but still get entangled with others. Isn’t it shameless?

Remembering her recent encounter with the smug Du Wanqiu, Song Yuan felt a surge of anger.

If she weren’t afraid of causing trouble for both the Song and Xiao families, she’d have slapped Du Wanqiu.

It’s baffling. We’re all human how can some people have no shame?

“If I were a man, I’d chase after you, marry you, and keep those shameless men far away.”

Xiao Qingru laughed. “Oh, so you have feelings for me too? But even if you were a man, I might not like you.”

Song Yuan: “…”

Couldn’t she give her some face?
