Chapter 45 “Old Wang”
Yu Zihan quickly dismissed the small thoughts in her mind. When she entered the classroom, she was once again the top student, Yu Zihan.
She focused all her attention on studying. It was true that when your heart is filled with one belief, there’s no room for anything else.
Time flew by quickly. After a week in the hospital, Gu Jingxuan was discharged.
His initial reason for coming here was to complete the mission of apprehending human traffickers. During the waiting period for the case to conclude, he had cooperated with the local police on several other cases.
Now, he had taken on Yu Zihan’s case. He was serious about it, but reality was a bit harsh. After all, he had no official position or reputation here, which made it difficult to carry out his work.
As the saying goes, “A strong dragon cannot suppress a local snake.” The one he needed to target was precisely that local snake. It was always difficult to carry out such sensitive work without stepping on some toes.
Despite pulling strings and using his network, the case was still progressing very slowly.
Cui Mingtao, who had been detained, knew that he was in trouble this time. However, he believed that the person he was tied to would come to his rescue, since they were both in the same boat.
He immediately sent someone to deliver a message and awaited a response.
As he sat in his cell, he thought carefully about the events of that day. Something didn’t feel right to him. It all seemed too coincidental, yet somehow, not quite right.
After several days of waiting without any results, his wife, Han Feifei, came to visit him.
Seeing her husband’s bloated stomach had noticeably shrunk in just a few days, Han Feifei was worried and asked, “What on earth happened? I heard that you planned to set fire to the warehouse. Are you out of your mind? Why would you do something like that?”
“Do you understand anything? That place had evidence I had been collecting for years. I thought if I burned it all, I could take down Lao Zhou along with it.”
He paused, frustration clear in his voice. “I never expected to be caught on the spot. And I never expected something so coincidental to happen. This whole thing is just bad luck, but I can’t just sit here in jail. Go find Lao Wang. He’ll have a way to get me out.”
At this point, Cui Mingtao still didn’t realize the gravity of the situation. He was thinking that this small problem could easily be solved with Lao Wang’s help. After all, he was confident that as long as Lao Wang was willing to intervene, everything would be handled quickly.
Han Feifei shared the same belief, which is why she didn’t seem too panicked when her husband was first detained.
“Don’t worry, I’ll go find Lao Wang. You’ll be out in no time.” After comforting her husband, Han Feifei left.
She returned home, tidied up briefly, and then carefully selected an item—a precious jade Buddha statue they had looted during a raid.
She knew that Lao Wang liked such things. Taking the statue with her, she bought a ticket and boarded the train to the provincial capital to find Lao Wang.
Han Feifei quickly made her way to Lao Wang’s house. He lived in a government compound, with armed guards stationed outside. She knew the rules.
After announcing the name of the person she was looking for, the guard called Lao Wang to confirm the matter.
“Hello, who is this?” came Lao Wang’s voice from the other end of the line.
“Brother Wang, it’s Feifei. I’m here to visit you and Sister-in-law. I’m right at the gate,” Han Feifei said into the phone. As soon as Lao Wang heard her voice, an image of Han Feifei’s alluring figure flashed in his mind.
His tone softened significantly. “Ah, Feifei, pass the phone to the gatekeeper, and then come on in. Your sister-in-law is at home. I’ll be back after work tonight.”
Han Feifei handed the phone to the guard, who, after receiving confirmation from Lao Wang, told her, “Just fill out the registration, and you can go in.”
After registering, Han Feifei headed to Lao Wang’s house. From a distance, she gazed at the house, a symbol of status and power, feeling a surge of envy in her heart.
Regaining her composure, Han Feifei approached and pressed the doorbell.
Aunt Zheng, the housekeeper, came to open the door. Recognizing Han Feifei as an old acquaintance, she greeted her warmly.
“Aunt Zheng, is Sister-in-law home?” Han Feifei asked, pretending to make small talk.
“Yes, she is.” Aunt Zheng had worked at Lao Wang’s house for many years and was adept at reading people.
Han Feifei had visited here a few times before, but every time she stepped into the living room, the lavishness still dazzled her.
Seeing Han Feifei’s reaction, Aunt Zheng couldn’t help but think, What a country bumpkin—this is nothing, and she’s already looking like this. People like her are never going to achieve much.
“Sister-in-law, I came to visit you,” Han Feifei said, cheerfully greeting Lao Wang’s wife, who was sitting on the sofa.
Lao Wang’s wife immediately felt a strong dislike for this woman. She knew all too well the faults of her husband, but no matter how much she disapproved, there would always be these seductresses trying to get close. She had no choice but to turn a blind eye.
She couldn’t tell these women off, but she certainly wasn’t going to treat them nicely. She wasn’t that cheap.
With a neutral expression, she said, “You’ve come? Have a seat. Aunt Zheng, pour Feifei some tea.”
After giving the order, Lao Wang’s wife yawned and said to Han Feifei, “I’ve had a cold these past few days and keep feeling sleepy. I’m going to lie down for a bit. You’re not an outsider, so just make yourself at home.” Her words were polite, but the tone made it clear she wasn’t very welcoming.
Han Feifei had urgent matters to discuss, so she had no choice but to stay, even with the chilly reception.
“Sister-in-law, go rest. I actually need to speak to Brother Wang. I’ll just wait for him here,” Han Feifei said. Lao Wang’s wife didn’t respond and went upstairs.
Han Feifei had only come to ask Lao Wang for help with her man’s issues, but now the woman had given her attitude. She cursed inwardly, She’s so old and dried up, still acting all high and mighty. If she can’t control her own man, who’s to blame? If she’s got the guts, she should take it out on her husband.
Sipping her tea, Han Feifei sank into the soft sofa, imagining a life where she could live so comfortably one day.
She drank cup after cup of tea, and when the flavor had completely faded, she heard footsteps outside the door.
She adjusted her clothes, straightened her hair, and leaned back on the sofa, gazing toward the door.
Lao Wang had originally planned to attend a meeting, but thinking about Han Feifei, he left work early to return home.
As soon as he entered, his eyes swept over Han Feifei. She understood exactly what he was thinking.
On purpose, she leaned forward slightly, her chest visibly pushing out, making the buttons of her blouse seem ready to pop.
Lao Wang’s steps quickened as he neared.
As he reached the front of the sofa, Han Feifei stood up.
They collided by chance. Lao Wang’s hand brushed against her chest, and he seemed oblivious as his hand lingered, unwilling to pull away.
Han Feifei could feel him deliberately fondling her. She lowered her head, blushing with embarrassment.
Aunt Zheng, who had been coming out of the kitchen with more tea, felt awkward. She didn’t know whether to stay or leave.
This kind of situation happened often in their house, so Aunt Zheng hesitated for a moment before wisely retreating back to the kitchen and closing the door.
