Military Marriage on a 1970s Island: Daily Life as a Stepmom Chapter 11

Chapter 11 : God is trying to get your attention!

Just as she was stunned, Zhou Runde’s eyes turned eagerly toward her.

Oh my, so this is my future daughter-in-law. She is so beautiful and kind-hearted!

No wonder my son was so eager to marry her this time!

“Thank you, little girl. If it weren’t for you, I don’t know what would have happened to my wife! How about this? To express my gratitude, why don’t you come to our house for lunch at noon? I’ll cook for you myself!”

When Song Shiwei heard this, she quickly waved her hand in refusal.

“No need, Uncle, as long as Auntie is fine!”

But for some reason, Song Shiwei always felt that these two people were a little too enthusiastic toward her.

In addition, the way Shen Xiu’e looked at her in the morning made her feel even stranger.

Could these two people be human traffickers?

But then again, which human trafficker would drive a car with a chauffeur?

Maybe realizing how ridiculous that thought was, she shook her head and ultimately declined.

She was now in a novel-like scenario, where all sorts of strange things could happen. Before going to the island with Zhou Tingyue, she had better be cautious.

Watching their “daughter-in-law” ride her bicycle away and disappear around the corner, Shen Xiu’e and Zhou Runde felt a bit regretful.

“What a good girl!”

Zhou Runde nodded in agreement.

“Yeah, I didn’t expect Tingyue to have such good taste this time!”

He slowly helped Shen Xiu’e into the car.

Her waist injury was indeed serious, so she needed to take proper care of herself over the next few days.

She also wanted to wait for her son to come back so they could go to Song Shiwei’s house together to propose marriage!

As if she had suddenly remembered something, she reminded Zhou Runde

“Our son’s engagement is a big deal. You should start preparing these next few days. Buy some good things, we don’t want the in-laws to think we’re being disrespectful! And I truly like Weiwei from the bottom of my heart. Don’t be stingy, get the best ones!”

Zhou Runde smiled at her.

” I’ll listen to you! How could I be unwilling to spend? I remember I still have a TV coupon! I’ll ask Xiao Zhang to talk to the supply and marketing cooperative and get one!”

Hearing this, Shen Xiu’e nodded in satisfaction.

Song Shiwei had no idea that she had unknowingly met her future in-laws!

On her way back, she was thinking about whether she should go to the mountain in the suburbs to dig up more beets to earn some extra money.

But instead, she ran into Ji Yanli, who was returning home from work at noon!

When their eyes met, Song Shiwei’s face turned pale.

She had been trying her best to avoid them these past few days!

All because she was afraid of running into him and Jiang Xinxin!

But who knew that she would forget to check the time when she came back from the hospital today? If she had known that he would be home at noon, she would have wandered around outside for a few more laps no matter what!

But now, it was impossible to avoid him, as Ji Yanli was already riding his bike toward her.

Song Shiwei made up her mind, slammed on the brakes, turned around, and pedaled in the opposite direction!

Seeing her deliberately avoid him, Ji Yanli frowned deeply.

He stopped his bike and couldn’t help but shout, “Song Shiwei, I know you deliberately provoked me that day just to get my attention! I’m telling you, Xinxin and I are already in a relationship! You’d better give up on this idea as soon as possible!”

After hearing what he said, Song Shiwei pedaled hard and rolled her eyes.

Brother, self-confidence is a good thing, but being overconfident is just plain disgusting!

The domineering TV dramas she had watched before popped into her mind. What were the classic lines from those dramas again?

“Woman, you have successfully caught my attention!”

Ugh!!

God, as if she was trying to get his attention!

She wanted to be as far away from him as possible, okay?!

Since going home was no longer an option, she might as well head to the suburbs to dig up some beetroots!

More money was better than anything else!

By the time she got home, it was already past three in the afternoon. Digging beetroots in the middle of the day was really inhumane!

It was mid-August, the hottest time of the year, and after this trip, she was practically sunburned.

Her face was red from the sun, and sweat covered her forehead, trickling down her cheeks.

Song Shiwei could only curse Ji Yanli silently in her heart. If that guy hadn’t suddenly appeared, she might be lying in bed right now!

As she pushed open the door of her house, she stopped her bike, took the beetroots off the back seat, and was about to get some water to wipe herself down.

Unexpectedly, Feng Chunmei and Song Yingying came out of the house, cursing at her.

“You little brat, how dare you bully our Yingying? You even dared to help outsiders extort three yuan from her! Song Shiwei, I think you’re just a useless wretch!”

Zhao Huili, who had been sewing shoe soles inside, became furious when she heard this.

She rushed out, holding the shoe soles in her hands.

“Feng Chunmei, who are you scolding? Are you talking about my daughter?”

Song Shiwei was already annoyed, and now, seeing Song Yingying and her mother refusing to back down, she became even angrier.

“If Auntie finds me so unbearable, why don’t I just ask Grandma to separate our family? That way, you won’t have to be upset all day long. What if I, the so-called ‘useless wretch,’ end up squandering all the family’s money one day?”

With that, she picked up the bag of beetroots and went into the house.

She wasn’t just saying this on a whim, she genuinely wanted her parents to move out of the family. After all, with her parents’ combined salary of 58 yuan a month, their lives wouldn’t be bad at all!

It just so happened that her mother had finished work at the factory early today and had come home ahead of schedule otherwise, she wouldn’t have heard what her aunt had said!

After Song Shiwei spoke, both Feng Chunmei and Zhao Huili fell silent. After all, separating the family was a big deal!

It wouldn’t look good if word got out!

Song Shiwei certainly hadn’t expected that such a small matter would lead to the family splitting up!

Although her uncle’s family and Old Lady Song were all selfish people, her parents, Zhao Huili and Song Zhiyong, still held onto traditional values deep down. A few days of her trying to talk sense into them wouldn’t be enough to change their minds.

Unless something major happened, they wouldn’t make the final decision.

Ignoring them, Song Shiwei carried the beetroots into the inner room. She fetched some water, wiped herself down, and went to rest.

In the evening, after dinner, when the whole family had gone to sleep, she secretly lit a kerosene lamp to start making brown sugar.

As she boiled the beetroots, she sighed to herself.

This house wasn’t meant for her. It was so inconvenient, she even had to make money in secret!

If she didn’t do it in secret and Old Lady Song or her uncle’s family found out, no matter how much she earned, it would all go straight into Old Lady Song’s pocket, and in the end, it would benefit her uncle’s family!

Thinking about this, she couldn’t help but look forward to Zhou Tingyue arriving soon.

Hurry up and take me away already!
