Military Marriage on a 1970s Island: Daily Life as a Stepmom Chapter 21

Chapter 21 : This is the woman his father has just married

Sun Meimei also sighed after hearing this. After the first meeting, she still liked Song Shiwei very much. She was beautiful and kind! Much better than Zhou Xiaoyan, who had lived here before.

Although Zhou Xiaoyan and her husband had only been married for a few years and their child was only three years old, they were still considered to have married late. She was also older than Song Shiwei, already twenty-seven!

She had a bad temper, loved picking on others, and always tried to take advantage of people.

The sisters-in-law here didn’t like her very much.

Now that the gentle and good-tempered Song Shiwei was here, they really didn’t want her to leave! They hoped she could stay for a while longer!

However, Song Shiwei, who was not yet favored by her sisters-in-law in the room, didn’t think too much about it. Her mind was full of thoughts about preparing her first meal here.

With the six eggs, sugar, and pork given to her by the sisters-in-law, plus the cucumbers and beans she had picked from the yard, she planned the meal.

She would stir-fry the beans with meat and make scrambled eggs with tomatoes!

Having made up her mind, she began cooking skillfully.

Soon, the house was filled with the rich aroma of food.

The fragrance wafted out through the window, spreading to several nearby households.

Sun Meimei was extremely surprised. Zhou Tingyue’s young wife looked so fair and delicate, yet the food she cooked smelled so delicious!

A few children who had just returned from playing outside also caught the scent.

The third brother, Zhou Wei, kept sniffing the air, squinting his eyes, and taking a deep breath.

“Wow! It smells so good!!”

Little Zhou Xinxin was already drooling.

“It smells amazing! Is that meat?”

The eldest brother, Zhou Cheng, and the second brother, Zhou Lin, also swallowed their saliva.

“No matter how good it smells, it’s not ours!”

Saying this, Zhou Cheng led his siblings back home.

But strangely, the closer they got to home, the stronger the aroma became!

Zhou Wei’s eyes lit up. He sniffed the air, ran forward, and finally leaned against the window.

“Why does it smell like it’s coming from our house?”

Hearing this, the children couldn’t help but look puzzled, and Zhou Cheng waved his hand.

“Let’s go in and check!”

As soon as they stepped into the living room, they saw two delicious dishes and a steaming pot of golden cornmeal cakes on the table.

One dish was stir-fried green beans with shiny, tender pork, and the other was golden scrambled eggs with tomatoes!

Everything was steaming hot, and the mouthwatering fragrance filled the room!

The moment Zhou Wei saw the food, he was so excited that he ran forward and reached out to grab a cornmeal cake.

At that moment, Song Shiwei walked out carrying a bowl and happened to see him!

“Wait!”

Her urgent voice stopped Zhou Wei’s small hand just before it could grab the food!

This also made Zhou Cheng and the others turn to look at her.

The woman in front of them was young and stunning by far the most beautiful they had ever seen!

Her delicate eyebrows were slightly furrowed, her red lips slightly parted, and there was a hint of nervousness on her face.

Zhou Cheng’s expression darkened.

So this was the new wife their father had married?

He hadn’t expected her to arrive so soon.

Nor had he expected her to be so young and beautiful!

He had heard before that the more beautiful a woman was, the more vicious she tended to be.

Now, seeing her furrowed brows and the nervous way she stopped the third brother, it was obvious she didn’t want him to sneak food!

As expected, she was just like the last cruel woman!

She wanted to mistreat them while their father was away!

Zhou Wei clearly thought the same. The light in his eyes dimmed, and he slowly withdrew his outstretched hand, lowering his head as he backed away.

But then, Song Shiwei put down the soup she was holding and gently grabbed Zhou Wei’s small, coal-stained hands.

Zhou Wei thought she was going to hit him and braced himself for a beating. He squeezed his eyes shut…

Then, he heard her say, “Come on, wash your hands with me. Wash them thoroughly before eating. Otherwise, your hands will be full of bacteria, and if you eat like that, you’ll get sick easily!”

As she spoke, she greeted the other children behind him.

Zhou Wei’s tightly shut eyes suddenly flew open, and he looked at her in disbelief. He saw that she wasn’t angry at all but instead was smiling at them helplessly.

He turned his head to look at his brother and sister, only to find that they had the same shocked expression as him.

Seeing that none of them were moving, Song Shiwei took the initiative and pulled up Xinxin with her other hand.

She had a round little face, big watery eyes, and beneath her small nose, her cherry-like lips were slightly parted in surprise.

So cute!

Song Shiwei’s heart nearly melted.

Even though she had never married in her previous life, many of her close friends had, and they had all become mothers.

Every time they brought their children over, she absolutely adored them hugging, kissing, and playing with them! She even used to joke that if she never got married in this life, she would have them call her their godmother.

And now, wasn’t that wish coming true in this life?

What could be better than becoming a mother, without the pain of childbirth?

Xinxin blinked her big eyes and timidly asked, “If I wash my hands, can I really eat?”

Song Shiwei smiled and nodded. “Of course! I’m married to your father, so from now on, I’m your new mother. Of course, you can eat the food I cook! If there’s anything you want to eat, just tell me, and I’ll make it for you!”

Xinxin’s eyes immediately lit up at her words.

The new mother was so beautiful and gentle! She really liked her!

And she even said she’d cook whatever they wanted to eat in the future!

But just as Xinxin nodded happily, a cold snort suddenly came from the side.

“Xinxin!”

Zhou Cheng, the eldest brother, frowned, his expression filled with displeasure. He was clearly unhappy that Xinxin had been won over so easily.

Song Shiwei also sensed something was off. The two older children seemed to be full of hostility toward her.

The younger ones were better especially Xinxin, who obviously liked her. As for the third brother, Zhou Wei, he seemed conflicted.

He wanted to eat the food she made, but at the same time, he was hesitant and afraid.

Song Shiwei figured that these children had been without parents for so long that they had developed strong vigilance. Anyone suddenly being introduced as their new mother would make them uncomfortable.

So, she ignored the two older ones and instead pulled the two younger ones one on each side toward the kitchen.

When Zhou Cheng and Zhou Lin saw her take their younger siblings away, they became worried. Afraid that she might hit them, they immediately followed.

But when they got to the kitchen, they saw that Song Shiwei was simply fetching water and carefully helping Xinxin and Zhou Wei wash their hands.

Her movements were gentle, her expression soft, and she always had a smile on her face.

At first, when Zhou Wei saw how dirty his hands made the water, he panicked. He was afraid she would dislike him for it and felt embarrassed, instinctively wanting to pull his hands back.

But to his surprise, she showed no disgust at all. Instead, she simply took some soap and carefully helped him wash them clean.

Her touch was both gentle and efficient.

For some reason, Zhou Wei couldn’t quite describe the feeling in his heart at that moment.

He had grown up without knowing a mother’s love. His biological parents had passed away when he was very young, and even Zhou Tingyue had never washed their hands for them like this.

After all, Zhou Tingyue was a strict, military-style man who raised them to be strong and independent.

This was the first time Zhou Wei had ever met someone like Song Shiwei. He didn’t know how to react.

So, he simply stood there stiffly, allowing her to wash his hands.

During this time, Xinxin never took her eyes off her.

When Song Shiwei finally looked up, she saw Xinxin’s eyes were red.

The little girl was actually crying.

As soon as she noticed Song Shiwei looking at her, she quickly lifted her sleeve to wipe her tears.

This only made Zhou Cheng, who was standing at the kitchen door, look even more displeased.
