Chapter 12
Sure enough, Zhao Jiayun’s loyal licker came soon. He Yueyang stood behind Zhao Jiayun timidly and smiled flatteringly: “Jiayun, let’s ignore her. It’s still raining outside. Let’s go back first.”
Zhao Jiayun looked at the closed door, her eyes red as if someone had bullied her. “Chu Zhiqing, it doesn’t matter if you misunderstood me. I can explain to you. I think as educated youth, we should be united and friendly. If there is anything, just talk it out.”
Seeing that no one in the room was talking, Zhao Jiayun lowered her eyes and complained to the people around her: “Yueyang, I don’t know why, Chu Zhiqing seems to have a problem with me, and I don’t know what I did wrong.”
He Yueyang half-pulled and half-dragged Zhao Jiayun away, shouting loudly: “You are kind, but others don’t appreciate it. Let’s go.”
Wu Guangqian, Zhao Jiayun and several other educated youth were squatting in the kitchen, each holding a bowl in their hands, drinking hot water silently without saying a word. He Yueyang’s eyes rolled around, and just as he was about to say something, the door of the educated youth institute rang.
“Is anyone there?”
Everyone looked at each other, no one wanted to open the door, but Wu Guangqian finished the hot water in his bowl in a few gulps and stood up: “I’ll go.”
When I opened the door, I saw a woman wearing a straw raincoat and holding a basket she had woven at home. She asked, “Is Chu Zhiqing here? I’m looking for Chu Sangning.”
Wu Guangqian nodded and said, “I’ll go call her.”
Chu Sangning smiled when he saw the person at the door, stretched out his hand and pulled the person into the house, “Sister-in-law, it’s raining so hard, it’s not too late to talk about it after the rain stops.”
Pan Wenlan was afraid that her sandals would dirty Chu Sangning’s house, so she refused to go in. It was Chu Sangning who forced her in.
Looking at this small house, where there was not even a spot of light, Pan Wenlan pursed her lips and was about to rush outside, looking angry as if she was going to settle a score with someone.
Chu Sangning pulled her back with amusement, “Sister-in-law, where are you going?”
“I’m going to ask them why they let you sleep here by yourself. There’s no light here, and the place is small. Isn’t this obviously bullying?”
“Sister-in-law, I like it here. It’s a little small, but I don’t have to live with others. It’s so comfortable.”
Pan Wenlan glanced at her. She was also a sent-down youth. How could she not know the situation of the sent-down youth? No one looked down on anyone else. Everyone was extremely arrogant.
That’s Chu Sangning, so stupid, I’m afraid he was sold out and is still counting money for others.
“It’s raining now, your aunt is worried that you won’t have enough to eat at the Youth Hostel, so she asked me to bring you some food. Eat it while it’s hot.”
Pan Wenlan lifted the cloth on the basket, revealing a bowl of egg custard, a mixed noodle steamed bun and a small plate of stir-fried cabbage.
Chu Sangning was flattered, “Sister-in-law, I’m not hungry, you can take it back and give it to Pan An.”
Pan Wenlan grabbed Chu Sangning’s wrist and said softly, “Don’t worry about Pan An. He has already eaten. You eat first, or I won’t leave.”
As he said this, he stuffed a bowl of egg custard into Chu Sangning’s hand.
After eating a bowl of egg custard, Chu Sangning was completely full. He shook his head hurriedly and said he couldn’t eat any more.
“Sister-in-law, I don’t want to eat anymore. I’m full. I’m really full.”
Seeing that Chu Sangning really couldn’t eat anymore, Pan Wenlan gave up the idea of feeding him and told him, “It’s raining now, so you don’t have to go out to work. Just rest well in the house.”
“Okay, sister-in-law, go slowly and be careful of the slippery ground.”
After Pan Wenlan left, Chu Sangning was about to close the door when a figure rushed in front of her like a calf and asked, “What were you doing just now?”
“He Zhiqing, you and that guy are two toads, one more capable than the other. Do I need to report to you about what I did? Who are you?”
“You, how can you talk like that? Try saying it again.” He Yueyang’s face was darker than the bottom of a pot in the kitchen, and he was so angry that smoke came out of his nostrils.
Zhao Jiayun was watching the joke at first, but when she heard Chu Sangning implying that she was a toad, she could no longer sit still.
With a pale face and a wronged look, he walked up to Chu Sangning and said, “Chu Zhiqing, did you misunderstand something?”
Chu Sangning opened her mouth in surprise and tilted her head in a naive manner, “Ah, Zhao Zhiqing is about to cry, what did I say?”
Zhao Jiayun clenched her hands at her side until her knuckles turned white. Indeed, Chu Sangning did not mention her by name, so now that she jumped out on her own, it was exactly what she had wished for.
She didn’t say anything, and her loyal lackey became anxious and angry, “You said Jiayun was a toad, Chu Sangning, why are you so arrogant? We are all educated youth, what’s so great about you?”
He Yueyang disliked Chu Sangning from the first moment they met. They were both educated youth, and Chu Sangning was well dressed and well fed, but he just asked her for a candy, but she was stingy and refused to give it to him.
Chu Sangning said nothing, but glanced at He Yueyang calmly. Seeing the jealousy in his eyes, Chu Sangning chuckled, “It’s nothing special. I just live better than you.”
He Yueyang was like a cat whose tail was stepped on and whose fur stood up. He was panicking and said, “Who knows where your stuff came from? You are so pretty, you can’t be a prostitute, right?”
To put it bluntly, the women in brothels are prostitutes who sell their bodies.
The smile in Chu Sangning’s eyes gradually faded, replaced by contempt and ridicule. She didn’t rush to explain, and said coldly: “I, Chu Sangning, am upright and honest, but you know so much. Is there anyone in your family who does this?”
She skillfully turned the topic to He Yueyang. Chu Sangning always believed that spreading obscene rumors about girls was the most shameful thing, but if someone insisted on doing so, Chu Sangning would not give them face.
Sure enough, He Yueyang got furious after hearing this. He pointed at Chu Sangning and couldn’t say a word. He opened his mouth to defend himself but didn’t know what to say, “You…you…”
“What do you mean by ‘I’? Don’t jump around in front of me.” Chu Sangning cursed people gently, but his words were thorny: “The grasshopper won’t jump around for long before it’s gone.”
After much persuasion from Wu Guangqian, Zhao Jiayun helped He Yueyang, who was about to faint from anger, back to the house with a dark face.
He Yueyang lay on the bed crying, and Zhao Jiayun had no time to pay attention to her. She thought about her performance in front of Aunt Luo in the past few days and that Luo Yiping would become the richest man in the future.
Zhao Jiayun could no longer sit still, fearing that the man she liked would be snatched away by someone else. She changed into nice clothes, took an oil-paper bag from the closet, and hurried out.
He Yueyang watched Zhao Jiayun walk away with tears in her eyes. After the people left, she smelled the fragrance lingering in the air, wiped her tears and walked towards Zhao Jiayun’s locker.
After hesitating for a moment, he gently reached out his hand and opened the unlocked cabinet…
