Chapter 20: Gu Wanrou Is Taken Away
Things had escalated to this point, and Gu Siqing was determined to lay everything out clearly—let the fallout happen as it may. From now on, she wanted nothing more to do with that family. Everything she had lost, she would take back!
The neighbors applauded her.
“That’s right! These people are just shameless ingrates. Siqing, you should’ve kicked them out a long time ago!”
“You all—” Gu Ruizhuo’s eyes were red with anger.
One of the police officers, having watched this entire spectacle unfold, interrupted coldly, “Enough with the nonsense. We’re here to conduct an investigation and bring someone back for questioning. We’re not interested in your drama. Take her away!”
At that command, two officers stepped forward and grabbed Gu Wanrou by each arm.
Gu Siqing didn’t hesitate—she pushed Shen Qingyan along and followed. After all, she was going to give a statement too.
Gu Wanrou didn’t want to go, but the police were in charge. As a young woman, she couldn’t resist.
Gu Ruizhuo tried to rush forward to stop them, but Gu Dakai pulled him back and shook his head.
His son was too young to understand that interfering with official duties could get him arrested. He couldn’t let him continue acting recklessly.
As everyone followed the police out, the neighbors still stood at the door, watching the drama unfold.
Bai Cuiyan rushed forward and slammed the door shut.
“Get out! All of you, get out!” she screamed, but the neighbors only gossiped louder. Some even burst into laughter, their mockery making her eyes bloodshot.
But after all, it was their family who had brought disgrace upon themselves. No one would sympathize with them. On the contrary, they’d become the laughingstock of the entire compound.
“This wretched girl!” The old woman finally smacked her thigh and cursed, “She won’t be satisfied until our whole family is ruined!”
Bai Cuiyan chimed in quickly, “Exactly!”
“If I had known she’d grow up to be such a backstabber, I’d have strangled her in her crib.”
Bai Cuiyan showed no restraint at all. Even the old couple thought the same. If it weren’t for Gu Siqing, none of this humiliation would’ve happened. They were people who cared about saving face. But now, their dignity had been stomped into the ground.
But no matter what they said now, it was too late.
Gu Dakai’s face was dark with rage. As the family continued to argue, he suddenly shouted,
“Enough!”
“The most important thing now is figuring out what to do. If Wanrou really ends up in prison, then we’re in deep trouble!”
That snapped everyone back to reality.
He was right.
At the police station.
From the moment she stepped in, Gu Wanrou’s heart was pounding. On the drive there, she had already rehearsed her plan: deny everything. As long as there was no hard evidence, they wouldn’t be able to do anything to her.
But the moment she entered the room, she saw Professor Qi Yuan.
“Prof… Professor Qi…” she stammered.
Then she remembered Shen Qingyan had said his mother brought the evidence. Her face turned pale.
Qi Yuan looked at Gu Wanrou’s face and felt sick. If Shen Qingyan hadn’t told her, she never would’ve believed this pretty girl could do something so vile.
“The suspect is here,” the officer said, and everyone entered the room. Besides Qi Yuan, there were several investigators.
Qi Yuan immediately handed over the files she had prepared.
“These records show that both girls attended the same elementary and middle school, but their grades have always shown a significant gap.”
With this comparison, plus verification from their former schools and archived records, it was clear that Gu Siqing was the one who had been admitted to the university.
Neighbors also confirmed who was who between Gu Siqing and Gu Wanrou—leaving no room for doubt.
The police officer’s face turned cold.
“Gu Wanrou, do you have anything to say for yourself?”
With the evidence laid out, it was essentially a closed case.
Impersonating someone for college admission was a serious crime.
Gu Wanrou’s mind went blank. She opened her mouth but couldn’t find any words. She was completely stunned.
“She has nothing more to say. Then the charges stand—she’s going to prison.” Qi Yuan’s earlier kindness toward Gu Wanrou had turned into pure disgust.
Prison? No!
Even though she had expected this outcome, Gu Wanrou couldn’t control her emotions. She burst out crying,
“I don’t want to go to prison! I already told you—Gu Siqing gave me the spot willingly! I didn’t impersonate anyone! Why won’t any of you believe me?”
“It’s because she married someone powerful, isn’t it? That’s why you’re all forcing me to admit to this!”
Hearing this, Gu Siqing sneered.
Qi Yuan exploded,
“All the evidence is right here, and you still have the audacity to accuse us of bias? How can a girl be so vicious?”
Startled, Gu Wanrou took a step back. The professor she knew was always elegant and composed. She had never seen her so angry.
“No!” she cried and suddenly lunged to grab Gu Siqing.
“Siqing, I won’t go to college anymore. I’ll give the spot back. Please don’t let them send me to prison—I don’t want to go!”
She could not go to prison. She figured that as long as she gave up the college spot, she could still find another way to live a better life. Even if she had to bow her head now, one day she’d regain everything she had lost—tenfold.
As long as she wasn’t convicted, she believed she could find someone better than Shen Qingyan and trample them both beneath her feet.
But Gu Siqing flung her hand away.
“Save it.”
This was revenge. And she wasn’t letting it go.
“Right now, this is no longer just between the two of you,” Qi Yuan said coldly.
“You broke university admission laws. You committed fraud. The university is going to sue you.”
“What?” Gu Wanrou’s hand froze mid-air.
She had assumed that as long as Gu Siqing didn’t sue her, she’d be fine. She didn’t expect the school to get involved. That left her with no way out.
“I don’t care what you say—Siqing gave me that spot willingly!” she shouted.
“I didn’t,” Gu Siqing said calmly.
“You told me I wasn’t worthy of it and took the admission letter from me.”
“Do you have any proof that I took it instead of you giving it to me willingly?” Wanrou asked, thinking herself clever.
Back then, only their family was present. Everyone would side with her. There was no way anyone could produce hard evidence.
“You—!” Qi Yuan was furious.
The officer stepped in.
“Miss Gu Wanrou, it seems you misunderstand the law. In our country, the burden of proof lies on the accuser when evidence is insufficient.”
“But in this case, Shen Qingyan has provided enough evidence proving Gu Siqing was the rightful admittee. We also have identification confirming who is who, and university records proving that you have been attending under her name.”
“You impersonated Gu Siqing. That’s criminal. The university can sue you and send you to jail.”
“If you insist that she willingly gave you her spot, then it’s you who needs to provide evidence—not Gu Siqing proving she didn’t.”
“Voluntarily giving up a college spot must involve compensation. So, Miss Gu Wanrou, what did you give her in exchange for that admission? Why would she give up such a precious opportunity for nothing?”
“Provide us the evidence, and we’ll investigate fairly.”
The officer’s voice was laced with disdain.
How could a whole family be this shameless—causing chaos at home, then still denying everything at the police station?
This kind of person needed to be locked up and reformed. If left outside, who knows what else they might do.
His words hit Gu Wanrou like a thunderclap.
She stood frozen, speechless.
This wasn’t how things were supposed to go.
Why did she need to prove that Siqing gave up the spot? Shouldn’t it be Siqing proving she didn’t?
But the truth was—she had never given Siqing anything.
Desperately, she tried to think of something, anything, that could be interpreted as compensation over the last three years.
But there was nothing.
Just moments ago, she thought she was being smart. Now, she felt like she had plummeted from heaven to hell.
She was going to be detained and sued by the university—and eventually sentenced.
No! she screamed in her heart.
How could this be happening?
She stared at Gu Siqing, who simply looked back with a calm, cold expression.
“People must pay for what they’ve done,” Gu Siqing said and pushed Shen Qingyan out the door.
No one looked back, no matter how loudly Gu Wanrou screamed.
Qi Yuan also left after exchanging a few words with the officers.
As they walked away, Gu Wanrou’s heart was filled with bitter hatred.
If she had known that Gu Siqing would marry Shen Qingyan and reclaim everything, she never would’ve let her go.
All for 1,888 yuan in bride price—they had forced Gu Siqing to marry in her place. And now she had lost everything she’d worked so hard to steal.
The regret was suffocating.
If she had married Shen Qingyan, none of this would’ve happened. Even though he was lame, she would’ve gained so much more in return.
Why had she looked down on him back then?
Now it was over. Gu Siqing would only get better and better.
And those two kids were actually Shen Qingyan’s biological children…
Qi Yuan was known for her upright character and strong family values. When she first heard about the kids, she didn’t object too much. Now she probably knew the truth.
That family was united now. They would only treat Gu Siqing better from here on out.
That thought tore at Gu Wanrou like a knife.
Regret overwhelmed her. She slid slowly to the floor.
It was all over.
If the university pressed charges, she had no hope left. A prison sentence would destroy her entire future.
She screamed inside the room, but no one responded. No one cared.
Even the officers, having heard all the drama, were thoroughly disgusted by her.
They had seen many selfish people—but never an entire family like this.
