Chapter 29: Siqing is Truly the Lucky Star of Our Family
After Gu Siqing finished speaking, Qi Yuan felt nothing but immense joy. Once she returned home, she was determined to brag to her old friends about her daughter-in-law—so outstanding in every way. Clearly very capable and already achieving success, yet still so humble.
Gu Siqing couldn’t bear her mother-in-law’s intense, admiring gaze any longer. Afraid she’d be showered with even more praise if she stayed, she quickly made an excuse and went to the train to fetch some hot water. When she returned with it, Qi Yuan suggested taking the two kids out for a walk. After all, the small compartment was cramped, and the children were starting to get restless. She also planned to grab a meal at the train station.
Gu Siqing and Shen Qingyan both nodded and let her take the children.
“Right now, he can walk slowly for short periods. In a few days, he’ll be able to walk longer distances. One day, he’ll stand up again—and returning to full health won’t be hard,” Gu Siqing said seriously.
Besides surgery, acupuncture, and massage, there was also the spiritual spring water. She had now truly come to appreciate its benefits. With all these things, she believed Shen Qingyan’s full recovery wasn’t out of reach.
Shen Qingyan heard her words and tightly held her hand without speaking, the warmth between their palms saying more than words could. He gazed out at the scenery flashing by the train window, full of hope for his recovery. If he could truly return to the way he was, then he could go back to the military—something he had always dreamed of. If that wish came true, he would have no regrets in this life.
Four or five days passed in the blink of an eye.
The two little ones had gone from being excited at the start of the journey to now feeling lethargic. Even the outside scenery didn’t excite them anymore. Fortunately, the train finally arrived at their destination.
Though Shen Qingyan could walk a few steps, he wasn’t supposed to overexert himself. So Gu Siqing pushed the wheelchair, carrying part of the luggage.
Qi Yuan carried a backpack and held both children’s hands tightly.
As soon as they stepped off the platform, they saw Shen Mengzhou waving from a distance. Qi Yuan quickly walked over with the children and handed over what she was carrying. “I’ll go help Siqing.”
Shen Mengzhou deftly slung the items over his shoulders and took the children’s hands to keep them from running around.
Qi Yuan came to help Gu Siqing with her things, and the whole family left the train station together. After exiting, they got into a car.
Only then did Shen Mengzhou say, “I found you a place near University Town. I already had it cleaned, and it’s fully furnished.”
“Before, Qingyan lived in the military district housing, but that won’t work now. Since Siqing will be going to college here anyway, you can live there together. What do you think?”
Gu Siqing had no objections and even thought her father-in-law’s arrangement was thoughtful.
Shen Qingyan agreed. “This is a great idea. Thank you, Dad.”
Seeing both were satisfied, Shen Mengzhou let out a sigh of relief. He had originally worried that if Shen Qingyan went home with them while Gu Siqing stayed here for school, the couple would be living too far apart. That’s why he bought the house nearby.
After discussing the matter, no one spoke much more. The two kids, now listless, leaned into Shen Mengzhou and Qi Yuan’s arms. Soon, they arrived at University Town, and the car pulled up in front of the building.
Shen Mengzhou carried the luggage inside.
To make things more convenient for Shen Qingyan, he had picked a small two-story standalone house. He made a large bedroom on the first floor. The rest of the rooms hadn’t been set up yet, as he wanted the young couple to decorate according to their own preferences.
Just as Shen Mengzhou was about to get the driver to help lift the wheelchair into the house, he was stunned to see Shen Qingyan, with Gu Siqing’s help, slowly stepping out of the car and walking step by step into the courtyard.
Shen Mengzhou stood frozen at the doorway, completely stunned. For a moment, he didn’t even know if he was dreaming. It was as if he had been struck by lightning, completely motionless.
“What are you doing?” Qi Yuan smacked her husband with annoyance when she saw his dumbfounded look. “There’s still stuff in the car! What are you just standing there for?”
Shen Mengzhou didn’t even blink—still staring at Shen Qingyan.
Gu Siqing noticed his expression and simply let go of Qingyan’s arm. Though Shen Qingyan moved slowly, he walked straight into the bedroom.
“T-This…” Shen Mengzhou looked like he had seen a ghost. Normally composed, he was now flailing his arms, unable to even finish a sentence.
Qi Yuan rolled her eyes and pulled him aside. In a low voice, she explained how Gu Siqing had been helping with Shen Qingyan’s treatment.
Lowering her voice further, she said, “Siqing is truly the lucky star of our family. Ever since she came, everything has started to turn around.”
Shen Mengzhou nodded vigorously. “Yes, yes!”
He looked up at Gu Siqing with eyes full of emotion, even a hint of tears, and walked over quickly. “Siqing, thank you so much—for everything. You’ve made it possible for Qingyan to walk again.”
“Dad, we’re family. No need to say thank you,” Gu Siqing replied as she continued moving the rest of the belongings.
Shen Mengzhou was silent for a few seconds, then went into the room to examine Shen Qingyan’s legs carefully.
Shen Qingyan, seeing his dad’s scrutinizing gaze, smiled helplessly and stood up, walking a few steps. “Dad, other than being unable to walk for long periods, I’m almost fully recovered. I’m currently undergoing rehab. Once that’s done and I continue conditioning, I should be able to return to the military.”
“Good, good, good.” After confirming it for himself, Shen Mengzhou finally relaxed completely. “Focus on recovering. Once your legs are fully healed, I’ll take care of getting you back. No need to worry.”
“If you two need anything, just let us know.”
Though not usually talkative, today Shen Mengzhou couldn’t stop talking.
Shen Qingyan was his only son, his pride. So young and already a decorated military commander—only to suffer a tragic accident at the peak of his career. He had once seen his son sitting in a wheelchair, staring at his legs in pain. He had pretended not to notice and hid his worry, not wanting to add more pressure.
He had often thought: as long as he and his wife were still alive, no one would dare bully his son. But what about later, when they were no longer around?
Now, all his fears were gone. And it was all thanks to Gu Siqing.
