Chapter 5: Gu Siqing — I Performed Surgery on You

Gu Siqing hurried back to the hotel, moving stealthily and making sure no one was following her. Only after confirming she was alone did she enter the newlywed suite. Once inside, she went straight into her spatial realm to check on Shen Qingyan’s condition.

He should be waking up soon. To prevent him from moving around and tearing his stitches, she had placed him on the bed and restrained his hands and feet with cuffs. To anyone else, it would have looked like she was restraining a mentally ill patient.

When Shen Qingyan woke up, the first thing he saw was a woman sitting beside the hospital bed. Everything around him felt unfamiliar — the overly white walls looked nothing like any place he’d been before. He turned toward the woman beside him, his heart sinking.

She really was a spy!

She had taken advantage of their wedding day to kidnap him — clearly trying to use him as leverage against his father! Even though he was now a disabled veteran and no longer active in the military, his father held a high-ranking position. As his only son, he was undoubtedly his father’s weak spot. Capturing him was as good as controlling his father!

Shen Qingyan immediately tried to kill himself — only to discover his hands and feet were cuffed to the bed. He couldn’t even commit suicide?

This spy had actually predicted his reaction!

His eyes full of caution, Shen Qingyan glared at Gu Siqing. “Who exactly are you?! If you’re trying to use me to threaten my father, give it up! It won’t work!”

Gu Siqing: “…?”

What is he talking about?

She was confident she hadn’t overused the anesthetic — surely his brain hadn’t been damaged?

Thinking back to how she’d knocked out her “discount husband” earlier, she began to understand the misunderstanding. She quickly tried to explain.

“You’ve misunderstood. I didn’t capture you. You just had surgery, and I was worried you’d move and reopen your wound, so I restrained you. Don’t panic — just listen to me.”

Shen Qingyan gave her a cold, suspicious look, waiting for her next lie.

“I examined your legs and found that they can be treated, so I performed surgery. You may not feel anything yet, but you should start regaining sensation by tomorrow or the day after. Recovery will take about a month and a half to two months — after that, you’ll be able to walk again. Because of muscle atrophy, you’ll find it difficult at first and will need time for rehabilitation.

“If you want to get back to your previous state — able to run, jump, and fight on the battlefield — it’ll take roughly six months.”

Shen Qingyan: “…”

Seeing the shock in his eyes, Gu Siqing continued gently, “I know this must be a lot to take in. You’ve probably heard about me from your parents — that I only graduated from high school, and that I’ve never studied medicine. But please, believe me. I may be your only hope. I don’t think you want to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair, do you?”

She remembered once catching a glimpse of him sitting in his wheelchair, staring at the military medals he’d once earned. His eyes had been full of loss.

For a soldier who loved his country, being unable to charge into battle and being confined to a wheelchair for life was a cruel fate. So she had to heal him.

“You really performed surgery on me? You can really cure my legs?” Shen Qingyan asked.

“Yes,” Gu Siqing replied firmly, nodding. “According to our original plan, you’d accompany me home in three days, and then I’d leave with you. You can wait and see how your legs respond over the next day or two before making any decisions. Until then, I’ll keep you restrained for safety.”

“Since you’re awake, you should eat something. I’ll make some food.”

With that, Gu Siqing stood and used some of the supplies she’d looted earlier to prepare a simple meal in the kitchen. All the water she used was spiritual spring water, which could help speed up Shen Qingyan’s recovery.

At first, Shen Qingyan was worried she’d poisoned the food — but then reasoned that if she’d already locked him up, he’d starve if he didn’t eat anyway. If she poisoned him, he’d die. If he didn’t eat, he’d also die. Either way, he figured he might as well not mistreat his stomach — and began eating.

Gu Siqing fed him spoon by spoon.

The food tasted delicious — clearly ordinary home-cooked dishes, but with a subtle difference he couldn’t quite place.

She had also replaced all the water in the room with spiritual spring water. Then she summoned a robotic assistant, instructing it to help Shen Qingyan with any needs.

Shen Qingyan stared in shock at the robot. Gu Siqing didn’t bother explaining.

The robot turned to him and spoke, “Hello, Master. Do you need anything?”

Shen Qingyan: “……!!!”

This thing could walk and talk?

He was beginning to wonder if he was dreaming!

Gu Siqing didn’t plan to hide anything from him.

First, she trusted him. Back when she had been secretly funneling money to the Gu family, he had turned a blind eye and treated Dabao and Xiaobao like his own.

Second, they were husband and wife. She didn’t see any reason to hide things.

He had once said, when she had nothing, that everything he had was hers — that as his wife, she could have anything she wanted.

Now that she had something, it was his too. She didn’t need to keep secrets.

That night, Gu Siqing slept peacefully, while Shen Qingyan lay wide awake, stunned, still unsure if this was all a dream. He couldn’t even pinch himself to check, since his hands were cuffed.

Meanwhile, the Gu family was a complete mess.

After the wedding, they had gorged themselves, determined to “get their money’s worth” — eating and drinking to their hearts’ content.

Gu Wanrou had originally planned to go home early, but when she saw that many of the Shen family’s guests were distinguished people, she decided to stay and make a good impression. Who knew — maybe she could land a promising husband?

Gu Ruizhuo had also stayed behind after spotting a pretty girl and not wanting to leave just yet.

So, the whole family didn’t leave until nearly 9 PM, waddling back home, full and satisfied.
