Chapter 49: What About Me?

“Li Li, how about I change your hospital room? There are plenty of VIP rooms available,” Ji’s mother couldn’t help but speak up as she watched Ji Xueli eating.

Although Duan Qingyu could be considered their lifesaver, she knew that Xueli had moved in because he had no one to take care of him. But the hospital could always hire a nurse.

“Mom, do you know how many news reports there are about nurses abusing patients?” Ji Xueli didn’t even lift her eyes, already knowing what her mother was going to say next.

“That’s just the minority,” Ji’s mother replied.

“Come on, Mom, Duan Qingyu and I used to play together as kids. Though we drifted apart for a while, we’re on good terms now. He saved my life; I can’t be ungrateful, can I?” Ji Xueli reasoned patiently.

Ji’s mother sighed, feeling helpless: “Fine, but tell me, who do you like?”

Ji Xueli nearly choked on her food at the unexpected question. She grabbed a napkin to wipe her mouth. “Don’t ask so many details. What if we break up later?”

“Well, it’s bound to happen sooner or later. You might as well break up now and focus on developing things with Yan Zhou,” Ji’s mother said, sounding a little urgent.

“Impossible. Mom, don’t talk nonsense!” Ji Xueli quickly stopped her. If Duan Qingyu heard this, it would be a disaster.

“Why is it impossible? You and Yan Zhou were so close before…”

Ji’s mother was about to continue, but a knock on the door interrupted her.

It was Cheng Du, supporting Duan Qingyu, who had just finished his reexamination, walking into the room.

“Ah, Auntie’s here. Hello, Auntie,” Cheng Du smiled and waved at Ji’s mother.

“Hello, Auntie,” Duan Qingyu nodded as well.

“Hey, Qingyu, how did the checkup go?” Ji’s mother asked with a smile. Though they hadn’t been in touch for a while, the three of them had a good relationship until high school, so it wasn’t awkward.

“The recovery is going well. The doctor said everything looks fine, just need to rest and do regular check-ups,” Cheng Du answered on Duan Qingyu’s behalf.

“And his head? His arm? No lingering side effects, I hope?” Ji Xueli asked, still concerned.

“Don’t worry, Qingyu’s fine. He’s even smarter than you,” Cheng Du teased, raising an eyebrow.

Duan Qingyu looked at her, and Ji Xueli smiled at him with a playful look. “I’m just concerned…”

“Here, Qingyu, I specially made some bone soup for you. Come and try it. It’s said that after an injury, you need to replenish your strength with this,” Ji’s mother said, handing him a bowl of soup, her gaze soft as she looked at him, her eyes familiar yet full of kindness.

She knew about the troubles the Duan family had gone through. Though she wasn’t close to Duan Qingyu or his mother, she could tell he was a good person, so she felt sympathy for his hardships.

“This wasn’t made by my mom, it’s made by Li’s mom,” Ji Xueli whispered to Duan Qingyu, motioning with her fingers to her lips.

“Tsk, if you can eat, then eat. If not, just lie down properly,” Ji’s mother glared at her.

“Oh…” Ji Xueli pouted.

“Drink up, Qingyu, is it good?” Ji’s mother asked, looking at him expectantly.

Duan Qingyu took a sip, a faint smile forming at the corner of his lips. “It’s good.”

“Good, then I’ll make more tomorrow,” Ji’s mother said, satisfied.

“Auntie, what about me?” Cheng Du asked quietly from the side.

Ji Xueli couldn’t help but laugh when she saw his pitiful expression.

“Oh, sorry Xiao Du, you can drink too, you need to replenish as well,” Ji’s mother quickly scooped another bowl of soup for him.

“Auntie, late affection is lighter than grass…” Cheng Du teased with a smile.
