Chapter 39: Wanting to Marry Her
Lu Yuetang paused for a moment.
He walked up to the male military doctor and asked, “The person you mentioned, Shang Rongrong, is she the female comrade who was just dancing on stage?”
“Yes, she’s a nurse in our military district.”
It was also through this event that they met such an outstanding female nurse for the first time.
“Alright, thank you.”
Lu Yuetang clenched his fists, his lips feeling warm, and his mind replayed those gentle moments just now. There was an indescribable lingering sweetness.
He was getting a little carried away.
If it were her… marriage wouldn’t be impossible.
Gu Wanru put down the phone, completely unfazed by the news that her son’s matchmaking attempt had failed.
When the commander mentioned it earlier, she had already said that her son was too independent and unconventional. If he didn’t find a match, they shouldn’t hold it against him.
She had prepared them for this outcome.
“Mom, who were you calling?” Yang Jiaojiao walked over and asked.
Gu Wanru looked up, suppressing a flicker of anger in her heart. But over time, she had grown accustomed to dealing with the Yang family and no longer felt as enraged. Instead, she smiled politely, “Jiaojiao, there’s an event at the military district next week. The seats are very limited—even I could only get two front-row tickets. I’m afraid we’ll have to let our in-laws and your brother-in-law sit further back.”
Yang Jiaojiao was initially unhappy.
But then she realized she would be sitting in the front row with her mother-in-law, and her mood improved.
The two of them continued their fake mother-in-law and daughter-in-law act, exchanging affectionate words. Their conversation got so emotional that they even shed tears.
After saying a few more pleasantries, Yang Jiaojiao lost patience and went to eat some pastries.
Gu Wanru sneered.
Just as she reached the door, two military doctors arrived and handed her Lu Yuetang’s latest medical report.
“Professor Gu, as you can see, Colonel Lu still… can’t have children.”
His… reproductive health was severely compromised.
Normally, this would be considered male infertility.
Gu Wanru’s vision went black, and she nearly fainted.
She grabbed the military doctor’s arm. “Is there no way to treat this? He’s had medical checkups before, and there was never any issue!”
The doctor looked troubled.
“We understand Colonel Lu’s medical history. But the poisoning he suffered had a catastrophic effect on his reproductive system. There’s nothing we can do except hope for a miracle.”
With that, they left.
Gu Wanru stood there, stunned as if struck by lightning.
She never expected that after all this time, after trying every possible treatment, there was still no improvement.
After Gu Wanru left, Qing Fen and Yang Wei stepped out from the shadows.
Yang Wei was furious. “No wonder the Lu family took an interest in my sister! Turns out, he can’t have children, so they wanted to find a naïve girl from a small town who wouldn’t question anything. What a bunch of scheming, heartless people!”
Qing Fen covered her son’s mouth. “Don’t talk nonsense! Think about how well you’ve been living lately. Sacrificing your sister for the happiness of the whole family—is that really so bad?”
Yang Wei thought about it and realized his mother had a point.
The mother and son decided to keep this secret. Once Yang Jiaojiao married Lu Yuetang, it would be too late for regrets. If they truly needed a child, Yang Wei could have one after getting married and pass it off as Lu Yuetang’s heir… Their plan was flawless.
Hu Ouhua had been exhausted all day. When she returned to the Chang household, she collapsed onto the bed and slept straight until morning.
Finally, she felt refreshed again.
She continued tutoring the two children until noon when someone knocked on the door.
Standing at the entrance were Shen Fubai and Lu Yuetang.
“Eh? Why are the two officers here? Could it be that you came specifically to see our teacher Hu?” Grandma Chang teased.
Professor Chang often said that with Hu Ouhua’s outstanding qualities, no ordinary man would be worthy of her—marrying an officer from the military district wouldn’t be difficult at all.
The elderly couple had been keeping an eye out for a good match for Hu Ouhua.
And weren’t these two men standing in front of them excellent candidates?
“Grandma Chang, here’s the thing. There’s an event at the military district this weekend. There will be performances, exotic foreign exhibits, and even imported delicacies. We’re here to deliver tickets for my sister.” Shen Fubai grinned.
As he spoke, he pulled two tickets from his pocket and handed them to Hu Ouhua.
Hu Ouhua wasn’t too keen on going.
Given her status, attending a military event didn’t seem appropriate.
“We’re all allowed to invite guests.”
Lu Yuetang seemed to notice her hesitation and casually reassured her.
Shen Fubai nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! You must come. There’s even a prize contest at the event. As a soon-to-be university student, can you really bear to let others take the prize money? The first-place winner gets 200 yuan and a portable radio! Second place gets 100 yuan and an electric fan…”
Hearing about the prize money, Hu Ouhua was immediately tempted.
“I’ll definitely participate!”
This was practically free money!
Lu Yuetang looked into her bright, cat-like eyes and suddenly thought of those same lively eyes in the movie theater. He couldn’t help but ask Li Suyun, “Aunt Li, is there a nurse named Shang Rongrong at your unit? The one who danced at the theater…”
His question made both women nervous.
Last night’s event was barely a success. Although Xu Mindong had caused some trouble, in the end, two couples were formed.
But the moment she returned to work, two colleagues stopped her, asking about Shang Rongrong.
It wouldn’t have been a big deal…
Except that Shang Rongrong had resigned as soon as she returned—and she was pregnant.
Li Suyun felt a headache coming on.
She had brushed off the questions earlier, hoping the matter would be forgotten. If word got out, she would be blamed for not doing her due diligence—how could she not know that one of the female participants was already married and expecting?
So, she had warned Hu Ouhua not to say a word about it.
“Ah, Shang Rongrong resigned and went back to her hometown.” Li Suyun dodged the question.
Then she quickly changed the subject and grabbed Hu Ouhua’s hand, smiling. “Colonel Lu, sometimes you shouldn’t just rely on your eyes—use your heart. Perhaps the person you’re looking for is right in front of you.”
Boom.
Hu Ouhua’s face turned red, and she quickly protested, “Aunt Li, that’s too much! If people hear that, they’ll think I’m an easy woman.”
“Thanks for your concern, Aunt Li, but Hu Ouhua and I are absolutely impossible!” Lu Yuetang said firmly.
Then he turned and left.
Everyone was stunned.
What just happened?
Wasn’t Hu Ouhua the one who had lived in the Lu household for a while? Didn’t they travel back from out of town together?
A simple joke shouldn’t have made him so angry.
Did he think Hu Ouhua was an unworthy woman?
“Ouhua, don’t be upset. If he doesn’t appreciate you, that’s his loss.” Li Suyun comforted her.
“It’s fine. I’m not upset.”
Hu Ouhua said the words, but deep down, she felt a tiny pang of bitterness.
She didn’t understand when Lu Yuetang had started looking down on her…
Shen Fubai grabbed Lu Yuetang’s arm. “Lu, what was that just now? Why did you say such a thing?”
“Nothing.”
Lu Yuetang didn’t explain. He just got into the car.
He did admire Hu Ouhua.
But last night, his mother had thrown his medical report on his desk and asked him a question:
“If you can never recover, if you lose your ability to have children—what will you do?”
Maybe… keeping Yang Jiaojiao wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
After all, she was greedy for money.
