Xu Xingran paid no mind to He Hansheng, who was left hurting and convulsing in pain behind her.
After all, she had spoken the truth.
She wasn’t a doctor.
She couldn’t take away his pain.
And staying wouldn’t help.
She had no desire to get tangled up with He Hansheng or to have him cling to her, so she left without looking back.
She figured He Hansheng must have lost his mind to come looking for her in the first place.
With his pride, after the way she ended things today, he certainly wouldn’t try again.
She couldn’t deny that running into He Hansheng had been both unexpected and unpleasant.
Her mood soured, she no longer felt like staying in Yunshi.
She immediately took a car to Huacheng, continuing her travel plans.
She wouldn’t let He Hansheng ruin her trip.
He Hansheng went to the hospital to get an IV drip, and his pale complexion looked much better afterward.
Hu Fei bought him some porridge.
“Sir, the doctor recommended something warm for your stomach,” she said.
Half-reclining on the hospital bed, He Hansheng looked serene and distant, his flawless face as cool as that of an immortal.
He slowly opened his eyes.
“Give it here,” he said.
Hu Fei handed him the porridge.
He Hansheng opened it.
It was a simple bowl of millet porridge.
There was no aroma.
The appearance wasn’t appealing either.
Weary, He Hansheng rubbed his forehead.
In the past, when he was hospitalized with stomach pains, it was always Xu Xingran who took care of him. The porridge she made had a delicate, sweet fragrance and looked inviting.
He closed his eyes, and all he could see was the scene of Xu Xingran leaving without hesitation.
Her figure—cold, indifferent, and without the slightest hint of attachment.
He Hansheng felt a throbbing at his temples.
He had only ever seen Xu Xingran’s passionate, all-consuming love for him.
He had never seen her so distant and indifferent.
He took a sip of the porridge. It lacked the soft, sweet flavor he remembered.
As he ate, he asked, “Where is she now?”
Hu Fei replied, “She went to Huacheng.”
He Hansheng’s elegant hand paused momentarily, then he let out a slight laugh.
“She ran off pretty quickly.”
Hu Fei hesitated before speaking, “Sir, it’s obvious that Miss Xu is playing hard to get. To keep going along with her…”
He Hansheng looked up.
In his deep eyes, there was a chilling glint.
“Assistant Hu, do you think my personal matters are yours to comment on?”
Hu Fei’s heart clenched, and she quickly apologized.
“Apologies, sir. I overstepped.”
He Hansheng’s tone was icy. “Leave!”
Hu Fei’s face paled as she stepped back out of the room, visibly shaken.
Her expression turned bitter as she exited, resentment brewing inside her.
How could Xu Xingran possibly be worthy of He Hansheng?
Did she even deserve to play such games?
The most infuriating part was that He Hansheng was actually indulging Xu Xingran in this game.
Did Xu Xingran really think she had a place in his heart?
Hu Fei gripped her phone tightly and made a call.
The line was quickly picked up.
“Miss Xia…”
*
After finishing his porridge, He Hansheng closed his eyes to rest.
Just then, his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed: Qingqing.
He Hansheng answered the call.
A soft, gentle voice came from the other side.
“Hansheng, where are you? My chest hurts so much.”
Xia Qingqing’s voice was delicate and sweet, sounding so fragile that it made one’s heart ache.
“I’m in Yunshi. If your chest hurts, let A Jin take a look. Take care of yourself.”
“Can you come see me tomorrow? I need you.”
He Hansheng was silent for a moment.
“I’m afraid I can’t.”
There was silence on the other end of the line after his refusal.
“Hansheng, what are you doing in Yunshi?”
He Hansheng didn’t hide anything.
“Xingran is here,” He Hansheng replied.
The voice on the other end grew more remorseful.
“Is it because I called you on the engagement banquet when I was unwell, and it upset Xingran? It’s all my fault. I’ll explain everything to her.”
He Hansheng frowned.
“It has nothing to do with you; it was my decision. If she’s upset, it’s because of me, not you. You don’t need to apologize. Take good care of yourself—your health is important.”
The person on the other end suddenly started to sob softly.
“It’s all my fault. How could I forget that it was your engagement banquet with Xingran? If only I hadn’t called you that day…”
He Hansheng felt a dull headache creeping in, but he continued to console Xia Qingqing with patience.
“Don’t overthink it; it wasn’t your fault…”
The next moment, Tang Jin’s anxious voice came through the phone.
“Qingqing, Qingqing, what’s wrong?”
He Hansheng’s heart clenched.
A second later, Tang Jin picked up the phone himself.
“Hansheng, Qingqing felt too guilty and overwhelmed and just fainted.”
He Hansheng’s handsome brows knitted together.
“Her constitution is weak; take good care of her.”
“Hansheng, you know she needs you more…”
He Hansheng’s mind flashed to the cold, unyielding look on Xu Xingran’s face as she left.
He Hansheng knew he couldn’t let things go on like this.
“I’m tied up here,” he replied.
Tang Jin’s voice grew agitated.
“Is it for Xu Xingran? Hansheng, how could you be so confused? Xu Xingran is just throwing a tantrum. She can’t leave you; she’ll come back on her own. But Qingqing needs you right now. You should prioritize her.”
He Hansheng felt incredibly tired.
Everyone thought Xu Xingran was just making a scene.
He thought so, Qin An thought so, Hu Fei thought so, Xia Qingqing thought so, and now even Tang Jin did.
So, to them, was Xu Xingran just a drama queen?
No!
In He Hansheng’s eyes, she was a well-behaved, understanding, obedient person.
For all these years, he hadn’t spent much thought on Xu Xingran.
She was easy to handle.
She wasn’t a drama queen.
“Tang Jin,” He Hansheng’s voice was icy, “I can’t spend my whole life prioritizing Qingqing. I will have a family in the future— a wife and children. They’ll be my top priority. As for Qingqing, you, as her doctor, are more useful than I am.”
After saying that, He Hansheng hung up the phone.
In the hospital room.
Xia Qingqing, lying on the bed, had heard the latter part of He Hansheng’s words.
Her already pale face lost all color.
Tang Jin was shocked that He Hansheng had said something like that.
He quickly tried to comfort Xia Qingqing.
“Qingqing, don’t overthink it. In Hansheng’s heart, you are the most important. It’s just that this time, Xu Xingran made things more complicated, and He Hansheng was simply giving her a way out.”
Xia Qingqing tightly clenched her hand beneath the covers.
A cold, vengeful glint flashed in her clear eyes.
Xu Xingran, if you know what’s good for you, stay away.
Otherwise, the pain you felt at the engagement banquet will be just the beginning.
Xia Qingqing’s pale, delicate face broke into a frail smile at Tang Jin.
“I understand. After all, Xingran will be Hansheng’s wife in the future, and I’m just his sister…”
Tang Jin, seeing her understanding and compassion, felt his heart break.
But when the topic shifted to Xu Xingran, his eyes were full of disdain.
“Heh! Does she, Xu Xingran, even deserve it?”
