Chapter 57
As the couple reached the door, Zhang Wenli turned and calmly said, “You’re back? Captain Lu, I haven’t met your wife since she came to the station, so I thought I’d stop by to chat with her.”
The women’s director was responsible for handling some matters concerning the wives in the family quarters, so having conversations with the military wives was normal.
However, Lu Guanshan got straight to the point and asked, “Director Zhang, my wife is shy. If you have something to ask, it’s fine to ask me. Let’s go inside and sit first.”
Zhang Wenli replied, “That might not work. Colonel Chen is looking for you and wants you to go to him.”
Lu Guanshan exchanged a glance with Yu Li.
Yu Li quickly smiled and said, “You go ahead, in case it’s an urgent matter. I’ll stay and chat with Director Zhang.”
Lu Guanshan had no choice but to go find Colonel Chen. He thought that since Zhang Wenli usually did things in an orderly manner, their conversation would probably be about daily matters. She wouldn’t make things difficult for Yu Li.
He decided to quickly deal with things with Colonel Chen and return to spend time with his wife.
Once Lu Guanshan left, Yu Li politely invited Zhang Wenli into the house.
At this time, the evening sun was ablaze, and when Zhang Wenli stepped into the courtyard, she couldn’t help but be surprised!
Many of the houses in the area were similar in layout, and Lu Guanshan’s house had been previously occupied by someone else, so Zhang Wenli had been here before. Back then, the place was messy and unremarkable.
But now, Yu Li had tidied everything up. The vegetable garden had lush green seedlings, and red dried peppers hung from the eaves. There were strands of homemade noodles drying on a rope.
When they entered the living room, the table had a checkered tablecloth, and the wall was adorned with peony paintings. The teapot and cups were polished to a shine, and there was a crocheted lotus flower standing beside them, adding an elegant touch to the room.
What surprised Zhang Wenli the most was not only how clean the house was, but also the pleasant fragrance filling the air, which made her unconsciously take a few deep breaths.
Yu Li had made some autumn pear syrup from pears in her space, and now she made a cup of water with it.
“Director Zhang, try this. It’s pear syrup I made. It’s great for clearing heat and soothing the lungs.”
Hearing Yu Li’s voice, Zhang Wenli sat up slightly but didn’t drink the water. Instead, she said, “Comrade Yu Li, have you been adjusting well since you arrived? If you have any difficulties, feel free to ask us.”
Yu Li smiled gently and nodded, “Thank you for your concern, Director Zhang. I’ve gotten used to everything.”
Zhang Wenli nodded and then changed the subject, “But there are some rules here in the family quarters that I need to go over with you, so you can get along with everyone. I won’t talk about harmony and love, but there is one thing I heard: you’ve been treating people in the family quarters with folk remedies?”
“That’s strictly forbidden! If anyone in the family quarters falls ill, they can go directly to the army hospital. The men are fighting on the front lines, and their families are their biggest worry. This kind of thing can’t be taken lightly! I hope you’ll reflect on this and write a self-criticism. It’ll be published in the regiment’s report as an example for everyone.”
Yu Li was stunned for a moment but wasn’t in a rush to respond. Instead, she smiled.
She slightly parted her red lips, took a couple of sips of water, and then looked at Zhang Wenli’s face.
A person’s health can often be seen in their complexion.
Yu Li asked, “Director Zhang, do you often suffer from headaches, nausea, and vomiting? When the pain comes, even painkillers don’t help? This kind of pain is usually triggered by fatigue, cold, or bad moods. When it happens, does your mouth feel bitter, your vision blurry, and do you become sensitive to light, as if someone is stabbing your temples with a sharp object? Also, is your menstrual cycle irregular, lasting at least twenty days?”
Zhang Wenli froze, her eyes widening in shock, “You! How do you know this? Who told you?!”
The headaches were something people around her might know about, but her menstrual issues were completely private. How could Yu Li know?
Yu Li quietly took another sip of water and asked, “Director Zhang, have you been to the army hospital? Did they manage to treat it?”
Zhang Wenli stared at her anxiously, “How… how could you tell just by looking at me? There’s no way! You must have heard it from someone!”
Yu Li smiled, “Who could I have heard it from? If you trust me, I can help treat it. If not, you can just assume I heard it from someone else!”
Zhang Wenli was shaken to the core!
Although she didn’t fully believe it, she couldn’t help but want to give it a try.
The headaches were unbearable, and the irregular menstruation had been bothering her for a long time.
She had been to the army hospital countless times, but nothing worked!
After hesitating for a while, Zhang Wenli spoke, “If you can cure me, you’ll be my savior!”
Yu Li immediately wrote a prescription for Zhang Wenli.
“Chuanxiong 30g, Angelica 15g, Bai Zhi 15g… These herbs don’t need to be decocted. Just grind them into a powder and take it. Take it every six hours. Your headaches have been severe recently, haven’t they? They occur around four or five in the morning. After you take it now, take another dose before bed. By tomorrow morning, the symptoms should be relieved.”
Zhang Wenli stared at Yu Li in disbelief, her mind buzzing!
But instinctively, she grabbed the prescription. She had to give it a try!
“As for your prolonged menstruation issue, once your headaches are alleviated, come to me, and I’ll give you another prescription.”
Zhang Wenli quickly nodded, “Okay… I’ll try it out!”
She had just left when Lu Guanshan returned.
As soon as Lu Guanshan entered the door, he asked, “Wife, what did Director Zhang want to talk to you about?”
Yu Li had just finished preparing the bathwater: “Nothing much, just asked if I’m getting used to things here, and then I casually showed her a remedy.”
When it came to headaches, she asked Lu Guanshan again: “Did your headache act up again today? If you ever feel uncomfortable, just let me know.”
Lu Guanshan carried the hot water over to prepare for his bath: “No, these past few days, whenever I try to recall the face of that man, the more I focus on seeing it clearly, the more my head feels fuzzy. So I just stopped thinking about it.”
Knowing that those memories bothered him, Yu Li quickly changed the subject: “What did Colonel Chen need you for?”
“It’s nothing important, just told me to read more books, not just focus on training. He said I should also improve my cultural literacy.”
Yu Li chuckled: “So, are you going to start reading tonight?”
Lu Guanshan looked at her and suddenly got interested: “You know, I’m the kind of rough guy who needs supervision to read. Colonel Chen told me to recite fifty chapters of prescribed content in front of everyone at tomorrow’s morning meeting. I need to memorize it all tonight, right? If I finish it, will you reward me?”
Yu Li thought that since Colonel Chen had said something, it must be important, so she quickly said: “Then hurry up, take a bath and read! If you memorize it all, I’ll reward you!”
They quickly took their baths, and just as they finished, it was dark, and the delivery people arrived to set up the bed.
Once the mattress was installed, lying down was incredibly comfortable!
Yu Li rolled over, handed Lu Guanshan a book, and said, “This one, right? You recite, and I’ll supervise!”
Lu Guanshan took it, flipped through it twice: “I’ve got it. Now where’s my reward?”
Yu Li was shocked: “You’ve got it? That quickly?!”
She quickly checked a few pages and found that Lu Guanshan had really memorized it all!
The man’s smile grew more mischievous as he rolled over and pinned her on the comfortable bed. Yu Li finally reacted!
“You already knew it, you just wanted me to reward you!”
Lu Guanshan leaned down to kiss her, laughing as he denied it: “I really didn’t know it, I just memorized it.”
Yu Li refused to believe him: “I don’t believe it. Who can memorize something that fast?”
But Lu Guanshan proved it to her. He truly had an exceptional memory!
He could memorize an entire page after just reading it twice, and it stayed in his mind.
Yu Li was astonished: “Oh my God, I’ve never seen someone with such a good memory! But why would Colonel Chen make you memorize books?”
Lu Guanshan held her, seemingly uninterested in the matter.
“I usually keep this talent hidden so no one notices. Otherwise, people might get jealous. Someone must have reported me to Colonel Chen, but I’m not afraid. I’ll just treat it as self-training.”
Yu Li’s eyes sparkled as she gazed at him, realizing that falling in love at first sight was just the beginning. After marriage, she kept discovering that his charm wasn’t just skin deep, but like fine tea—more delightful the longer she got to know him!
Looking at the little girl in his arms, her eyes filled with longing, Lu Guanshan was completely melted.
His heated breath brushed her ear.
“Wife, don’t you want to learn this skill?”
Yu Li widened her eyes: “Isn’t this something you’re born with? Can you really learn it?”
Lu Guanshan’s large hand stroked her smooth skin, his voice low and seductive: “Of course, when we exchange energy over time, we become one, right? I can do it, so you can too…”
What kind of twisted logic is this! This man’s speech is getting more and more outrageous!
Yu Li was so stirred up that she couldn’t refuse.
But when she realized what kind of “reward” this man wanted as he kissed his way down, it was already too late…
He crawled under the covers, giving her an unforgettable experience!
That night, on the other side of the room, Xia Yuying and Wu Guohua slept on opposite sides of the bed, both awake in silence.
Xia Yuying had been cleaning all day, and the stench of sweat wouldn’t wash off.
If it weren’t for her aunt’s help, they wouldn’t even be able to afford a bowl of dumpling soup.
Thinking about their recent days, Wu Guohua felt like he was losing face at work.
He wondered, if he hadn’t broken off his engagement with Yu Li, would things have been better?
Lost in thought, Xia Yuying moved closer, hugging her pillow, and took the initiative to hold him.
“Guohua, we can’t keep arguing like this…”
Wu Guohua couldn’t take it anymore and shoved her away: “I don’t want to touch you.”
Xia Yuying, immediately humiliated, shouted angrily: “Who do you want to touch then? Yu Li? Go ahead, touch her! Why don’t you? She’s so slutty, maybe she’s dying for you to touch her! I’ve figured it out, you like sluts, you like trash! Don’t you remember it was her who ruined you like this?!”
