Chapter 16: Beat the son, here comes the father.
“Hmm?”
Shen Tan froze; his punch had been fast enough, so how had Lu Li caught it?
Hadn’t Lu Li just been closing his eyes?
He tried to withdraw his hand, but searing pain shot through the fingers that were trapped.
Lu Li twisted the fist he was gripping, and a tremendous force made Shen Tan’s arm contort uncontrollably; the pain forced him to turn, exposing his back.
Lu Li chuckled lightly, released the hand, and at the same time raised a foot that kicked Shen Tan’s rear; Shen Tan toppled to the floor and landed flat on his face.
Down below the dojo platform, Shao Kang and Shao Linlin froze.
“Linlin, does this Lu Li really not know martial arts?” Shao Kang raised an eyebrow, because someone who knew nothing about martial arts could never have caught Shen Tan’s punch.
Shao Linlin swallowed. “It seems he isn’t completely clueless…”
Gifted in martial arts herself, she could tell that Lu Li’s moves were crisp and efficient; he dismantled Shen Tan’s attack with perfect ease, not by sheer luck.
So he actually excels at martial arts too? No wonder I had my eye on him!
“Such grip strength, at least 60 kg…” Shen Tan climbed up in humiliation, shocked that his confident strike had ended with him eating dirt.
How utterly disgraceful!
He pressed his right arm, caution flashing in his eyes. “Lu Li doesn’t know martial arts, but his wrist strength is insane; next time I must avoid his hands!”
He steadied his breathing and dashed in again, shuffling forward to feint high at Lu Li’s face while actually aiming low.
Lu Li watched him quietly as Shen Tan circled, sometimes faking a punch, sometimes a kick, yet always pulling back the moment he got close, as slippery as an eel and giving Lu Li no chance to grab him.
“I’m coming, I’m going, heh-heh, hit me if you can.”
What Shen Tan did not know was that, to Lu Li, his movements were as slow as a crawling turtle.
Fed up, Lu Li seized on an opening, lashed out with a lightning kick to Shen Tan’s abdomen, and sent him flying.
Shen Tan felt as if his organs had shifted; clutching his stomach, he trembled in shock. “That kick was so fast! I couldn’t see it at all! His legs are even stronger than his hands! Does he really not know martial arts?”
He finally realized the truth, but it was already too late.
The moment he got back on his feet, Lu Li closed in, threw him with a shoulder throw, and sent him sprawling.
Shen Tan’s head lolled to the side and he passed out.
Shao Kang and Shao Linlin stood with their mouths agape.
A second-degree taekwondo student had been insta-killed without striking back?
“That’s it? I haven’t even used any strength and he’s down?” Lu Li was equally surprised; he had thought Shen Tan would be formidable.
Rubbing his hands, Lu Li lost all interest.
He dragged Shen Tan off the dojo like a dead dog and looked at Shao Kang.
“Mr. Shao, may I spar with you now?”
Shao Kang was still shocked; after only a few exchanges the two high-schoolers had produced a winner, and he couldn’t tell whether Shen Tan was too weak or Lu Li too strong.
“Hold on!” A shout suddenly came from not far away.
Lu Li looked up; the newcomer was none other than Shen Tan’s father, Shen Huan.
Shen Huan hurried over, checked his son’s body, sighed in relief when he found no injuries, and then stormed toward Lu Li in anger.
“Why did you use such a heavy hand on your classmate?” he began, instantly accusing.
Lu Li replied, “Director Shen, please get the facts straight; Shen Tan kept provoking me.”
The words “Director Shen” inflamed him even more; after work the principal had kept him back, scolded him, and told him not to come in tomorrow.
It felt like a bolt from the blue… middle-aged and suddenly fired?
He knew it was because of Dai Ming, but he couldn’t afford to offend Dai Ming, so he poured all his anger onto Lu Li.
“He provoked you, so you beat him this badly? Where are your manners? Cheating wasn’t enough… you even resort to violence! I knew you were a thug!” Shen Huan cursed.
Unable to stand it, Shao Linlin cut in. “Mr. Shen, Lu Li didn’t cheat; Professor Dai from Yongning University has clarified everything! And fights on the dojo are always at one’s own risk… besides, Lu Li didn’t hit him hard!”
“At one’s own risk, so he can go all out? Fine, Lu Li, tell me this: do you dare get on the dojo and fight me?” Shen Huan ignored the part about Lu Li holding back.
Shao Kang frowned slightly; he had never expected the usually refined Shen Huan to turn into a shrew.
He took a step forward. “Brother Shen, your son challenged him first, and Lu Li didn’t hit him hard… I can testify.”
Shen Huan said, “Brother Shao, spare me the lecture. My kid got bullied; as his father I have to vent this anger. I just want to ask this punk whether he dares fight me on the dojo!”
Shao Kang’s frown deepened and he said softly, “Brother Shen, you’re a fourth-degree taekwondo black belt, qualified to be an instructor here. Taking on a youngster seems a bit…”
“Fine!” Lu Li cut in. “Director Shen, didn’t you say you wanted a match? Let’s do it, and if you lose, please roll smoothly out of here.”
“Dad, what does ‘roll smoothly out of here’ mean?” Shao Linlin whispered.
Shao Kang answered, “Scram.”
“Dad, why are you yelling at me?”
Shao Kang fell silent.
Overjoyed, Shen Huan said, “Lu Li, you agreed yourself, so don’t blame me for picking on someone younger!”
Lu Li ignored him and looked at Shao Kang. “Mr. Shao, if I beat this fourth-degree black belt, can I be the instructor?”
Seeing Lu Li’s earnest expression, Shao Kang grew serious as well. “Of course. If you win, we can discuss the contract right after.”
“Good!” Lu Li decisively stepped onto the dojo.
Shen Huan hurried after him.
Nervous, Shao Linlin clutched her father’s arm. “Dad, you’re really letting Lu Li fight Mr. Shen? He’s a fourth-degree black belt… you can’t handle that casually.”
Shao Kang instead asked her, “Does your classmate really not know martial arts?”
She replied, “Of course he doesn’t.”
Shao Kang narrowed his eyes. “It doesn’t seem that way…”
He suddenly felt that Lu Li was not some reckless youth but truly had real skill.
On the dojo, Shen Huan didn’t waste any time; before Shao Kang could speak and before Lu Li had taken his stance, he struck at Lu Li’s face.
He actually ignored martial ethics and launched a sneak attack!
