Chapter 26: I’ll Get Him for Sure!
The brother and sister horsed around for a while, and in the end Lu Li emerged the clear victor.
But Lu Yao did not lose out, because she got to eat Harbin Fried Pork, sweet-and-sour tenderloin, potato-braised brisket, garlic broccoli, and century-egg lean-pork congee…
Thanks to these delicious dishes, Lu Yao finally believed in Lu Li’s cooking skills and wept tears of gratitude.
“Why is it even tastier than what restaurants make? Brother, how on earth did you do it?” Lu Yao demolished two huge bowls of congee before rubbing her swollen belly and finally stopping.
“I just searched the recipes on my phone and followed them. I used to experiment on my own, so the food came out a bit awful.” Lu Li tossed out a casual excuse.
He glanced at the time on his phone and urged, “Stop slouching at the table once you’re done eating, hurry up and pack your schoolbag, or you’ll be late if you keep dawdling.”
Lu Yao lovingly patted her stomach and drawled, “Ah, bad brother, you made my belly so big that I can’t go to school; help me ask the teacher for leave!”
The corner of Lu Li’s mouth twitched twice, and he felt a throb between his brows. “Spout nonsense again and I’ll give you back to that stray dog!”
Only then did Lu Yao mutter under her breath and go pack her bag.
To test his Minor Accomplishment-level cooking, Lu Li had prepared a sizable amount of dishes.
Not wanting to waste them, he packed the food into the household containers, intending to take them to school.
Both his cafeteria and Lu Yao’s had microwaves, so they could simply heat the food and eat.
“Bring a portion for Lulu too! After she tastes Brother’s cooking, she’ll definitely want to marry into our family even more!” Lu Yao reminded him.
Lu Li packed two servings for Lu Yao, then stuffed the remaining dishes into his own bag.
He could give them to Tang Yang; the big guy ate a lot, so nothing would be left over.
…
Because of what had happened the night before, Chu Zining did not fall asleep until 2 a.m.
“Second personality, are you still there?”
The moment she woke, Chu Zining asked cautiously, yet received no answer.
Did the second personality disappear…? Chu Zining felt a pang of loss.
In fact, when the second personality suddenly vanished last night and she regained control of her body, she had been somewhat panicked.
It felt as though her closest companion had left without warning, leaving an empty hole in her heart.
She got up, washed, and prepared to cook.
Yet when she reached the kitchen, she froze, because the rice, flour, and other staples at home had mysteriously vanished.
Had a thief broken in?
Chu Zining looked up and saw a note.
The scrawled handwriting belonged to her mother, Chu Qing.
“Aren’t you so tough that you even dare hit your own mother? Since you’re that impressive, don’t eat my family’s rice or flour. Let’s see how long your temper lasts! I hope you starve, you freeloader!”
Chu Zining blankly put the note down, her shoulders slumped, and a sheen of tears gathered in her lustrous peach-blossom eyes.
…
When Lu Li reached the classroom, Tang Yang was the first to greet him, looking miserable. “We have the fitness test today… you’re in for it again!”
“Huh?” Lu Li blinked. “We still have a fitness test in our senior year?”
Tang Yang replied, “They say it’s the last fitness test before the college entrance exam. I’m not sure, but apparently it’s important and will count toward the composite score.”
“Oh, I see.” Lu Li did not care.
Seeing how calm he was, Tang Yang asked, puzzled, “Why aren’t you the least bit worried? Since 7th grade, every time we ran 1,000 meters you ended up exhausted like a dead dog, and I had to drag you off the track.”
Tang Yang was right; when Lu Li’s Constitution had been only 3 points, he was indeed a weakling, and running 1,000 meters had been torture.
Each time, the PE teacher trailed behind him, begging like a boot-licker, saying, “Please, I’m begging you, don’t walk, okay?”
Yet this time Lu Li straightened his back. “Five years… do you know how I survived those five years? The old Lu Li is dead! A mere 1,000 meters is child’s play to me now!”
Tang Yang snorted. “Even if you beg me this time, I won’t haul you off the track.”
“Tsk, just watch me!”
Elsewhere, Shen Tan pulled out the desk mate’s chair next to Shao Linlin and sat down beside her.
Startled, Shao Linlin immediately shielded her bag of chips and glanced warily at Shen Tan.
Shen Tan hurriedly explained, “I’m not going to eat them, I’m not, I just came to give you this.”
He produced a bottle of sports drink, set it on her desk, and said considerately, “The girls have to run 800 meters later, and I’m afraid you might not handle it.”
He assumed that such thoughtfulness would definitely win Shao Linlin’s favor.
Unexpectedly, Shao Linlin’s apricot eyes widened in anger. “Who do you think you’re belittling? I’ve always been first in the 800 meters!”
Shen Tan froze, his face awkward. “Th-then drink it after you exercise… to replenish electrolytes…”
He slipped away crestfallen.
Staring at the sports drink on her desk, Shao Linlin pulled out an identical bottle from the drawer, pouting as she frowned. “That Shen Tan is so annoying… he even buys the same drink as me.”
She took out her phone, which displayed messages Tang Yang had previously sent.
Tang Yang Is Not Nuggets: “Lu Li’s stamina is bad. Go give him a sports drink later and you’ll definitely earn his goodwill!”
Cutest Linlin in the World: “Really? Don’t lie to me.”
Tang Yang Is Not Nuggets: “Relax, I’m a guy; only guys understand guys! This is aid in a snowstorm… he’ll surely thank you! Once you two are together, you can do whatever you want with Lu Li!”
Cutest Linlin in the World: “Do whatever I want…”
Cutest Linlin in the World: “(〃▽〃)”
Tang Yang Is Not Nuggets: “Must get him!乁( ˙ ω˙乁)”
Cutest Linlin in the World: “Must get him! ヾ(≧O≦)〃”
Shao Linlin clenched her fists and rehearsed her lines in her mind; she planned to floor Lu Li’s heart with a gentle, caring verbal punch.
The time for the fitness test arrived quickly, and the boys and girls assembled on the field in separate lines.
Shao Linlin looked around, bobbing her head until she finally spotted Lu Li; she hurried over and tugged the hem of his shirt with her chubby little hand.
Lu Li looked at her in puzzlement.
He was not particularly close to Shao Linlin, but right now she counted as his boss’s daughter.
He needed to treat her politely.
“What is it?”
Seeing Lu Li’s handsome face made her heart pound, and though she had prepared many lines, the words that left her mouth were identical to Shen Tan’s:
“Your endurance isn’t great, and I’m worried you might not handle it; this drink replenishes electrolytes… drink it after you finish running.”
With that, Shao Linlin thrust the drink into Lu Li’s hand, covered her face, and ran off shyly.
Lu Li glanced at the drink, then at the fleeing Shao Linlin, and frowned.
“Tsk, who is she looking down on?”
“Why does everyone know about my bad endurance?”
Lu Li felt a bit vexed; he could not let the boss’s daughter look down on him, or his fight-choreographer job could be toast… after all, he was still in the probation period and could still be fired.
He loosened his muscles, determined to post a good time and, metaphorically speaking, slash Shao Linlin’s butt with a small knife to open her eyes.
Little did he know that Shen Tan, who had witnessed everything, was now blazing with fury and charged toward Lu Li.
Pointing at Lu Li, he cursed, “Lu Li, have you no shame? The drink I gave Linlin and you snatched it for yourself?”
