Chapter 27: Trouble Befalls Chu Zining
“Lu Li, have you no shame? I bought that drink for Linlin, and you stole it for yourself!”
Shen Tan flew into a rage when Lu Li actually took the drink he had meant for Shao Linlin, even making her cry and run off covering her face.
How could anyone be so despicable and shameless?
Lu Li paused, glanced at the drink in his hand, looked at Shen Tan, and then held the bottle out. “You want it? Here.”
This sort of drink was meant for people with weak constitutions.
Shen Tan had been floored by two of his punches yesterday; he really was too frail… Lu Li nodded to himself.
“Is the drink what I care about? What I mean is…” Shen Tan slapped Lu Li’s hand away. “Duel me! We’ll see who finishes 1,000 m first, and the loser keeps his distance from Linlin from now on!”
Another duel? Why did this pickled-mustard classmate behave like a fighting cock, obsessed with challenges every waking moment…
Lu Li sighed. “Can we not compete?”
“Are you scared?” Shen Tan grinned triumphantly. “If you’re afraid, then stay away from Linlin.”
“That’s impossible,” Lu Li refused flatly; he would be working at the martial arts club all the time, constantly running into Shao Linlin, so how could he keep away from her?
Shen Tan roared, “Then duel me!”
Truly aged phlegm… once it sticks, you can’t scrape it off the wall.
“And if I win, what will you do?” Lu Li shot him a sideways glance.
Shen Tan straightened his back. “If you win, then I’ll keep my distance from Linlin in the future!”
“No, no, no, just keep your distance from me,” Lu Li said hurriedly.
He really had grown tired of the guy.
Soon, under the PE teacher’s orders, the boys lined up at the starting line, ready for the fitness test.
The girls waited by the track, as they would run after the boys finished.
Shen Tan looked at Lu Li and smiled smugly.
Although Lu Li had beaten him in martial arts, he did not believe Lu Li could run faster than him.
He had observed Lu Li before and knew the boy was a stamina weakling: he could play basketball for only 2 minutes 30 seconds at most and would be panting after half a lap.
Hmph, what good was being big and tough? If you could last only 2 minutes 30 seconds, you were still trash.
Shen Tan had reflected all last night and bitterly regretted not wearing down Lu Li’s energy before fighting; had he done so, last night’s outcome might have been different.
“This time I must beat him… for Linlin!” Shen Tan clenched his fists.
Just then the PE teacher’s whistle for the start sounded in his ears.
Shen Tan closed his eyes, gritted his teeth, shoved aside the classmates around him, and charged forward head-down.
He burst forth with a once-in-a-lifetime speed; this time he would cut Lu Li down under his horse!
The girls in the class screamed.
“Wow! He’s so fast!”
“Amazing… like a gust of wind!”
“That’s our class’s number 1! Is he handsome or what?”
“So handsome!”
“Number 1 must be me,” Shen Tan basked in the girls’ praise, as if eating ice cream on a summer day, light down to his bones.
The very next moment he heard them shout, “Go, Lu Li!”
“Lu Li, so cool!”
“Lu Li, I want to bear your babies!”
“Huh? Why is it Lu Li???” Shen Tan opened his eyes and finally saw Lu Li far ahead in the lead, already half a lap ahead of him!
What was going on? Shen Tan rubbed his eyes before he was sure he was not mistaken.
Since when had Lu Li become such a runner?
Shen Tan found it unbelievable.
Tang Yang was equally shocked; was this still that weakling Lu Li?
No way, had he secretly taken some miracle tonic and cured his chronic kidney deficiency?
Only Shao Linlin was not surprised; instead she grew troubled. Wasn’t Lu Li supposed to have poor endurance? He was clearly this persistent… how was she supposed to capture him now?
Stupid Tang Yang! Now she had no way to do whatever she wanted with Lu Li… Shao Linlin propped her chin and puffed out her cheeks.
Leading the pack, Lu Li listened to the girls’ cheers and felt speechless.
He glanced sideways at the cute girl yelling about having his babies and shook his head in secret; morals were in decline, and people were not what they used to be.
A proper young lady actually plotting something indecent with a monkey.
Forget it, no need to waste time; better end this farce quickly.
Lu Li drew a deep breath and sprinted through the remaining lap and a half in a blur.
Shen Tan’s knees were about to fall apart, yet he still could not catch sight of Lu Li’s backside.
After finishing, Lu Li wiped the sweat from his forehead; with a Constitution of 7 his body had transformed, and his running ability now rivaled the school-team athletes.
He figured that to reach professional-athlete level he would need a Constitution of 8.
A male classmate in charge of timing ran over and said apologetically, “Sorry, you ran too fast and I couldn’t record your exact time. By the rules I can’t give you a grade; could you run it again?”
In truth he had timed it, but the girl he had a crush on had just been cheering for Lu Li and talking about having his babies, so he was jealous and wanted to mess with Lu Li.
Lu Li felt perplexed. “I finished first, that’s a full score; just write down any time.”
The boy insisted, “No, I must follow the rules.”
Lu Li smiled faintly. “Rules are dead, people…”
The timekeeper hurried to cut him off. “Right, the rules are dead; my hands are tied.”
Lu Li chuckled, placed his hand on the boy’s shoulder, and squeezed hard. “No, what I mean is, rules are dead, and people can be dead too.”
The grappling strength from his martial-arts stat made the boy’s arm nearly go numb, and he stammered, “A-actually, a grade is just a number; I’ll write whatever you want!”
Hmph… should’ve said so earlier.
Satisfied, Lu Li clapped his hands, took a swig of the sports drink Shao Linlin had given him, and headed back toward his class.
Yet the moment he turned, he saw an arresting face… Chu Zining.
Although her face drew the eye, it looked terrible at the moment, even frightening. Her eyes were glassy and lifeless, the circles beneath them sunken and dark, her cheeks pale with a bluish tint, as if she had just crawled out of a grave.
Her class, Class 1, was also doing the fitness test, and she shuffled toward the track like a walking corpse.
Lu Li felt puzzled; hadn’t he solved her problem last night? Why did she still look like this?
Uneasy, he followed her.
Sure enough, trouble came quickly.
At the whistle, the girls of Class 1 surged forward; with several deliberate shoves, Chu Zining fell flat on the ground and lay motionless.
The boys of Class 1 crowded around her, shouting and yelling, trying to rouse her.
Lu Li grew angry. Shouting won’t help, you idiots… pick her up first!
He strode over, parted the crowd, cradled Chu Zining’s head in his arm, and lightly patted her cheek.
Her eyelids cracked open a slit; when she vaguely saw that it was Lu Li, they closed again, yet her delicate hand clutched his shirt front tightly as if grabbing a lifeline.
Feeling that things were bad, Lu Li scooped her legs up and carried her, shouting “Make way!” while sprinting toward the infirmary.
At that moment a girl blocked his path and demanded, “Who are you? Why are you taking a member of our class away?”
Lu Li recognized her as one of the girls who had deliberately shoved Chu Zining earlier.
“I’m taking her to the infirmary. Get out of my way,” Lu Li said urgently.
The girl refused to yield, spreading her arms to bar him. “She can go to the infirmary herself, can’t she? Our boys can take her… why are you meddling?”
As she spoke, she even grabbed at Chu Zining, trying to drag her down from Lu Li’s arms. Chu Zining’s face grew even paler from the tugging.
Lu Li frowned; this girl was clearly trying to stop him from taking Chu Zining away.
“I’ll say it one more time… move! If treatment is delayed, can you bear the cost?” His voice turned icy.
The girl snorted. “It’s just a fall; what’s the big deal? ‘Bear the cost’? Ha! I’m not letting you go to the infirmary. What can you do, big guy… hit a girl?”
No sooner had she finished than Lu Li swung a slap across her face; she went down at once, and a red welt swelled rapidly.
Lu Li gave a cold snort and stepped over her.
The girl lay dazed on the ground, then clutched her face and shrieked venomously at his back, “You actually hit me? State your name if you’ve got the guts; I’ll bring people to deal with you!”
Lu Li answered in a chilly tone, “Lu Li, Class 4. I’ll be waiting.”
