Chapter 54: The Little Red-haired Mutt
Seeing he could not keep pretending, Lu Li reluctantly left the beautiful girl’s lap, stretched lazily, and slowly woke up.
“Huh? Where am I?” Lu Li feigned confusion and looked warily at Chu Zining beside him.
Chu Zining had already checked Lu Li’s body and knew he was unhurt; he had simply fallen into an inexplicable coma, which had worried her for quite a while.
Now that he was awake, a small surge of joy rose in Chu Zining’s heart.
“Lu Li, we’re safe; we’re at the police station now,” Chu Zining said softly.
“The police station? What about those two bad guys?” Lu Li asked with feigned curiosity.
“They’re already taken care of.” Jiang Chaoyun slowly withdrew the hand she had reached into the car. “Get out first; we’ll talk details when we take your statements.”
Jiang Chaoyun snorted softly and looked at Lu Li with suspicion.
This brat woke up at exactly the right moment; had he been faking the whole time so he could take advantage of Little Chu?
Jiang Chaoyun narrowed her eyes and switched to the gaze she used when interrogating suspects.
She glanced at Chu Zining; the girl lowered her head and smiled shyly, her cheeks pink and her eyes curved like crescents, clearly head over heels in love.
Jiang Chaoyun was a little puzzled; the Little Chu she had seen earlier had been decisive and dashing, even making her own heart flutter a bit.
But now this Little Chu was a lovestruck, timid girl, as if she had become a different person.
Was this the power of love?
Jiang Chaoyun was a workaholic who had never dated, so she had no way to explain this behavior.
Looking again at Lu Li, the boy was clean-cut and handsome, no less attractive than the idols on TV, yet a trace of slyness flickered deep in his eyes, as though he were plotting something.
The more she looked, the less he seemed like a good person; Jiang Chaoyun stayed alert and resolved to discreetly remind Little Chu to beware of this boy.
The three of them got out of the car, Jiang Chaoyun leading the way while Chu Zining and Lu Li followed behind.
Lu Li noticed that Chu Zining walked unevenly and was limping.
I only lay on one of her legs and made it numb; next time I’ll switch between both legs, he earnestly reflected on his mistake.
With a light sigh, Lu Li moved closer. “Let me support you.”
Before, the girl would certainly have refused him shyly, but this time she lowered her head.
“Th-thank you.”
“We’re classmates; it’s the least I can do.”
“Mm.” So we’re only classmates… Chu Zining bit her lip.
“Lu Li, why did you suddenly pass out?” Remembering this, Chu Zining raised her moist peach-blossom eyes. “Should we go to the hospital for a checkup?”
“No need; I know what happened.” Lu Li rubbed his chin and mused. “Actually, I’ve had this illness since I was born.”
“An illness?” Chu Zining stared blankly at Lu Li.
“Yes.” Lu Li took a deep breath. “Whenever my emotions swing wildly, the illness flares up and I fall into a coma; no matter how people call me, I won’t wake.”
“There’s an illness like that?” Chu Zining listened in astonishment.
“It seems to be a condition that hasn’t been documented yet. I’ve been to many major hospitals, and the doctors were helpless.” Lu Li gave a wry smile.
“Then what should we do? Is it serious?” Chu Zining asked anxiously.
Lu Li waved his hand. “It’s nothing serious. I just sleep for a bit and wake up. The illness rarely acts up; it hasn’t happened for years, so it doesn’t affect my daily life.”
Chu Zining let out a sigh of relief; as long as nothing was wrong, it was fine.
Although she still doubted the existence of such an illness, since Lu Li said so, it probably wasn’t a lie.
“Woof, woof!”
A dog suddenly barked ahead, and when Lu Li looked up, a tawny puppy was squatting in front of Jiang Chaoyun.
When Jiang Chaoyun approached, the puppy wagged its tail happily, planted its forepaws on her leg, and panted with its tongue out, acting very affectionate.
The dog’s body was earth-yellow like a typical rural dog, yet oddly the fur on its head was maple-leaf red.
Jiang Chaoyun squatted and petted the puppy for a while; her stern, valiant face melted like ice and blossomed into a gentle smile.
When Lu Li and Chu Zining came over, Jiang Chaoyun stood up and her face returned to its serious look.
The puppy sniffed around and snuggled beside Chu Zining’s legs; seeing how docile it was, the somewhat timid Chu Zining reached out to stroke it and showed a serene smile.
“Sis, is this puppy a police dog?” Chu Zining asked.
Jiang Chaoyun shook her head. “No, it’s just a stray. It’s very friendly, so we all like it and let it stay here instead of driving it off.”
After glancing at Jiang Chaoyun’s unrivaled black-stockinged legs, Lu Li asked curiously, “Why is the fur on this dog’s head red?”
Lu Li had never seen a dog with red fur before and could not resist rubbing its head twice.
When she heard his question, the corner of Jiang Chaoyun’s mouth twitched, and she showed a helpless, amused expression.
She did not answer Lu Li’s question and simply turned around and walked off.
“Come on. It’s getting late. After you finish your statements, I’ll take you home.”
Chu Zining obediently followed her, while Lu Li kept staring at the puppy’s head in puzzlement for a moment.
…
Inside the deputy chief’s office at the police bureau…
“What? The suspects had bombs and firearms and were taken down bare-handed by two high-school students? Impossible! Absolutely impossible!”
Vice Director Zou Quan stared at the middle-aged officer in front of him, listening to his report in astonishment.
This middle-aged officer, whom Lu Li had met before, was named Wang Hongtao; he was Captain of the Criminal Police Division and Jiang Chaoyun’s immediate superior.
“No, it’s entirely possible!” Wang Hongtao said solemnly. “By using the suspects’ statements and the surveillance inside Good Flavor, we have reconstructed the incident.”
It is certain that the male student named Lu Li and the female student named Chu Zining fought side by side and subdued the two criminals.
Zou Quan quickly took the report and read it; his brows gradually relaxed. “Good! Very good! Although the girl ultimately took down the criminals, it’s obvious the boy orchestrated the whole situation.”
“This crisis was resolved thanks chiefly to him!”
Wang Hongtao nodded. “Indeed. The police handled this poorly: first, we failed to discover that the suspects carried a bomb; second, during evacuation we did not identify the contact person; third, the sniper arrived too late and nearly messed things up.”
“It’s fair to say that if not for this boy, once the suspects detonated the bomb it would have gravely endangered lives and property and severely damaged public trust in our bureau.”
“I propose that our bureau award these two students the Outstanding Youth Award and a Courageous Act bonus, document their deeds, and coordinate with their school to publicize them as commendation.”
Zou Quan nodded in full agreement. “Excellent. Since you made the recommendation, you will present the award…”
“Hold on, I object!” At that moment a SWAT officer strode in and shouted, “I believe this student named Lu Li has done more harm than good. He deserves no reward and should instead be sternly reprimanded!”
