Chapter 1: I Hope You Know When to Back Off
“Two hundred yuan!”
“With this basket full of herbs, it’s worth at least five hundred yuan. You’re charging way too much.”
In a traditional Chinese medicine shop, Lin Feng had a stern face, his tone tinged with anger.
In front of him stood a boss with a greasy face, bare arms, and a big beer belly.
The boss looked troubled as he said, “Brother Lin, I have no choice. The higher-ups are pressuring me to lower the price, and I need to make a living too.”
Lin Feng squinted his eyes.
“Boss Sun, I’ve studied medicine with my grandfather for over ten years. I know the market prices for these herbs. You don’t have to take me for a fool. Just give me a fair price!”
“Two hundred and fifty, no more!”
Boss Sun set the price.
Lin Feng’s face darkened; he felt like he was being insulted by this offer.
After a brief hesitation, Lin Feng gritted his teeth and nodded, “Two hundred and fifty, hurry up and give me the money.”
If it weren’t for the urgent need for money at home, Lin Feng would have been willing to spend more time and go to the county town. The buyers there offered higher prices, at least an extra twenty yuan.
Boss Sun didn’t hesitate, directly taking out two hundred and fifty yuan and handing it to Lin Feng.
Lin Feng took the money and walked away.
Once Lin Feng was far enough, Boss Sun carefully stored the herbs.
“These are all herbs from the Lin family; they’ll definitely fetch over a thousand yuan,” the boss couldn’t help but laugh.
Lin Feng’s grandfather was a renowned local healer, and the herbs from the Lin family were top-notch!
Maple Leaf Village.
Named after the old maple tree at the village entrance.
March.
The vast expanse of sky and earth, a gentle breeze blowing.
After the spring rain, the mountains and forests glistened with dew, colorful clouds hung in the sky, and a misty haze filled the air, creating an ethereal atmosphere.
A gentle breeze carried the fragrance of grass and trees, bringing a sense of tranquility.
Just at the village entrance.
Lin Feng encountered the village’s gossip squad.
Four middle-aged ladies sat under the old maple tree, cracking sunflower seeds. When they saw Lin Feng returning, their eyes lit up, and they ran over with joyful smiles.
“Xiaofeng, why are you still here?”
“I just went to town to sell herbs,” Lin Feng answered truthfully.
“Oh, selling herbs? There were many cars that just went to your house. I heard the some big boss wants to propose to your grandfather, I don’t know which of your sisters caught his eye.”
Auntie Li spoke with excitement, her eyes gleaming.
She had just witnessed the scene, seeing two people carrying a bamboo basket filled with hundred-yuan bills, estimating at least over a million.
“Xiaofeng, which sister do you think the big boss is interested in?”
“Look at you, Xiaofeng, both your sisters are beautiful. It doesn’t matter which one he likes,” another auntie laughed.
Proposing marriage!
Lin Feng’s face changed.
“I’ll go back first.”
With that, Lin Feng walked towards his home.
His house was at the end of the village. Along the way, he met many villagers, all happily greeting him.
“Xiaofeng, you’re back!”
“Xiaofeng, hurry home.”
The more cheerful and enthusiastic the villagers, the more somber Lin Feng’s expression became.
“My sister is only seventeen years old. Whoever dares to propose, I’ll give him a beating!” Lin Feng gritted his teeth, getting angrier as he thought about it.
This was no big boss; he was clearly a beast.
Gradually, Lin Feng arrived outside his house.
Five luxury cars were parked outside, and Lin Feng only recognized the Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Just these two cars were already worth over a million.
At the entrance stood six suited bodyguards.
Lin Feng looked at his own arms and realized that if a fight broke out, he would be the one getting beaten.
Entering the house.
The house was a mud-brick building from the last century, with a leaking roof patched up by Lin Feng with plastic bags. It could mostly withstand the rain.
On the walls of the house hung various dried herbs, and the entire place was filled with a strong medicinal aroma.
In the living room, four people were seated.
Besides Lin Feng’s grandfather, there was a middle-aged couple and a young woman.
The moment Lin Qingfeng saw the young woman, he was instantly stunned.
She was too beautiful.
Dressed in a red gown, her face was as white and tender as snow, resembling delicate white jade. Her rosy lips were alluring, her delicate nose was charmingly upturned, and her beautiful eyes were as clear as a sparkling spring, captivating and transparent.
Lin Feng was captivated instantly.
“Xiaofeng, quickly call Uncle Song and Aunt Su.” Lin Guochang happily said.
“Hello, Uncle Song, Aunt Su.” Lin Feng respectfully greeted the middle-aged couple.
Middle-aged man Song Tianqing looked at Lin Feng, showing a satisfied smile and laughed heartily, “Indeed My Son-in-Law is talented young man. Lin, my friend, did not deceive me.”
“Uncle Song praised…”
Lin Feng, who was about to be modest, froze.
Wait a minute.
What did he just call me?
Son-in-law???
Lin Feng looked at his grandfather, Lin Guochang, with a puzzled expression, as if asking, “How come I didn’t know about this?”
Lin Guochang waved his hand, indicating that he also had no idea.
Song Tianqing, on the side, smiled and quickly explained, “Son-in-law, this is the engagement set by your father and me. Your grandfather didn’t know about it.”
Lin Feng looked at Song Tianqing strangely.
His father had been dead for three years. When did he set up an engagement for himself, and why did he not know anything about it?
Song Tianqing patted Lin Feng’s shoulder and looked at his daughter on the side, “Yanyan, go chat with Xiaofeng. I’ll talk to your Grandpa Lin.”
Song Xueyan nodded, got up, and left.
Lin Guochang gave his grandson a meaningful look, signaling him to follow quickly.
In the end, Lin Feng reluctantly followed behind Song Xueyan. The two walked in silence, and unknowingly, they arrived by a small stream.
Song Xueyan furrowed her eyebrows slightly, thinking that Lin Feng might be a bit dense. After walking for so long, he hadn’t said a word.
Raising her delicate lips, Song Xueyan asked slowly, “Your name is Lin Feng?”
“Yes.”
A brief conversation ensued, and the two fell into silence again.
Song Xueyan bent down slightly, picked up a palm-sized river stone by the stream, held it in her hand, and looked straight into Lin Feng’s eyes.
“For this engagement, I hope you know when to back off.”
With that, Song Xueyan crushed the river stone she held in her hand into powder.
She raised her hand, and the powder dispersed in the wind.
Lin Feng watched the crushed river stone, couldn’t help but swallow hard, and in a few seconds, he seemed to envision the miserable life that awaited him after marrying into the family.
“Song Xueyan, she’s definitely going to be a violent wife in the future!” Lin Feng shrank his head, muttering to himself.
“Do you understand what I just said?” Song Xueyan said coldly.
Lin Feng tried to keep calm, “Rest assured, my grandfather will ask for my opinion, and I will reject this engagement.”
With the agreement settled, the two returned to the house.
Inside the house, Lin Guochang and Song Tianqing seemed to be having a harmonious conversation. Lin Guochang saw Lin Feng return and happily said, “Xiaofeng, I agreed to this marriage.”
Lin Feng: ???
At that moment, Lin Feng felt like crying.
Grandpa!
Shouldn’t you have asked for my opinion?
