Chapter 10: Arranging a Blind Date—Why Does the Guy’s Profile Sound So Familiar?
Although the man’s background and looks were impressive, Matchmaker Wang still felt that pairing him with the Jiang family’s daughter wasn’t a loss at all.
So she beamed with satisfaction, looking more and more pleased with Jiang Xiaoci as time went on. The more she looked, the more she was convinced this match was bound to succeed.
Jiang Xiaoci sat quietly beside her, listening to the matchmaker’s praise. She only smiled faintly, remaining calm and composed, showing no signs of excitement.
Matchmaker Wang grew even more satisfied. Just by her demeanor alone—if she married into that family, she’d definitely live the life of a rich young mistress. So what if the man was a bit physically weak? With a family like that backing him, wouldn’t the wife end up calling all the shots?
In this era, women who could take charge of a household were rare and treasured. The more she thought about it, the more she believed this little girl from the Jiang family was truly blessed.
It just so happened that the man’s family had recently asked her to find a wife, and now the Jiang family had come knocking—what was this if not fate?
Even better, the Jiang family’s daughter was so good-looking!
Upon hearing Matchmaker Wang’s words, Jiang’s parents exchanged a glance, both showing clear satisfaction.
Jiang’s mother asked, “So, what does the young man do for a living?”
Matchmaker Wang’s eyes flickered, and she tactfully replied with a light laugh, “Oh, he has a job. He holds a nominal post at his mother’s factory. It’s not a demanding role—very relaxed.”
Jiang Xiaoci, feeling bored at first, perked up a little upon hearing that. Something about this person’s description felt familiar. Where had she heard it before? She couldn’t recall.
Still, she said nothing. In her current situation, to put it bluntly, as long as she wasn’t marrying Lu Yaozu, anyone else would do.
Jiang’s mother responded with a simple “Oh,” not thinking too much about it.
Jiang’s father, however, gave it more thought. Hearing that the man only had a nominal job at a relative’s factory made him hesitate.
But soon enough, he nodded and said, “Given how good the boy’s family background is, a relaxed job is acceptable.”
As long as the other family was strong, their daughter would have better security after marrying in.
In this era, a young couple’s own power meant little. But if the man’s family could provide protection when needed, then the Jiangs could feel at ease.
Matchmaker Wang, an expert at reading people, noticed the father’s hesitation but, seeing his agreement, seized the moment to finalize the match.
“Well then, if you all have no objections, I’ll arrange for them to meet. How about tomorrow at noon—does that work?”
The Jiang couple nodded in agreement, their eyes full of anticipation as they looked at their daughter.
Jiang Xiaoci had no objections either. She smiled slightly and nodded, a little shyly, “I’ll go along with whatever you decide.”
Matchmaker Wang clapped happily. “Oh my, this girl is so obedient and well-mannered. Then let’s consider it settled!”
After some more pleasantries, Jiang Xiaoci and her parents hadn’t been gone long before Matchmaker Wang eagerly rushed to inform the man’s family.
The Lu family’s house was quite large. When she arrived, a servant even served her tea. The youngest son happened to be resting at home, and both of the elder Lus were also there, casually chatting with their son.
After explaining her reason for visiting, the Lu elders were clearly delighted. Lu Zhoushan reclined on the sofa as usual, wrapped tightly in a military overcoat. His face, pale to an almost porcelain-like white, exuded a quiet, cold aura.
Seeing his lack of interest, Matchmaker Wang couldn’t help but speak up, praising the girl profusely.
“Sir, Ma’am, I’m not exaggerating. This is the first time I’ve come across such a young and pretty girl looking to marry. She’s truly a beauty, and her temperament is wonderful too. My, she and your second son would make a perfect match!”
Lu Zhoushan happened to be sipping tea at that moment. Hearing this, he choked slightly, discreetly covering his mouth with a handkerchief as he let out a soft scoff.
This matchmaker’s probably just eyeing the hefty dowry the Lu family promised, he thought. She’s so eager to play matchmaker, it’s like she’s describing a goddess.
But the Lu elders were all smiles. Old Madam Lu said, “Alright then, Matchmaker Wang, since you say so, I trust the girl must be lovely. Zhoushan, what do you think?”
Lu Zhoushan raised an eyebrow, about to speak, but Old Master Lu waved him off. “Doesn’t matter what he thinks. Just meet her first, then decide.”
Lu Zhoushan stared at the ceiling. Yep, just as expected—my opinion doesn’t matter here at all.
Matchmaker Wang clapped her hands happily. “Exactly! The old master is absolutely right. I’ve already spoken with the girl. If you approve, let the young folks meet tomorrow at noon.”
This time, Old Master Lu directly made the decision: “Alright, it’s settled then.”
Old Madam Lu grinned so wide her face could hardly contain it. “Matchmaker Wang, you go ahead and arrange it. Our second son will definitely be there.”
The Lu elders were very straightforward and agreed on the spot. Matchmaker Wang left beaming after getting a firm confirmation.
Afraid their son might suddenly back out, the Lu elders reminded him again, “Zhoushan, remember—get yourself ready tomorrow and go meet the girl.”
Lounging lazily on the sofa, Lu Zhoushan didn’t even lift an eyelid. “Fine, fine. Whatever you say.”
He didn’t want to go on a blind date at all, but he couldn’t resist his parents. He was already thinking about how to gently reject the girl tomorrow—just enough not to hurt her pride.
The next morning, Jiang Xiaoci did a simple touch-up and, following the matchmaker’s arrangements, went to the restaurant for the blind date.
Just as the matchmaker instructed, she brought a red rose as a secret signal. Though this date was something she was forced into, she couldn’t muster much enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, on the Lu family side, Lu Zhoushan was even more uninterested. He could barely summon the energy to sit up.
With his sickly pale complexion and weak appearance, Old Madam Lu frowned at him and insisted on helping him get dressed properly.
Clothes make the man, after all—and she was from a garment factory. She refused to believe she couldn’t make her son look a little more presentable. Otherwise, the girl might run away before the marriage even happened!
She picked out a stylish outfit for him and dressed him up while nagging, “Look at you. You never wear proper clothes. Now look at this outfit I picked—once you put it on, you’ll look so handsome, the girl will fall for you immediately.”
Lu Zhoushan couldn’t help but chuckle. “Mom, are you saying she’ll fall for me, or for this outfit?”
Old Madam Lu lightly hit him. “Nonsense! Clothes need a good person to bring them to life. What’s wrong with you, anyway?”
In a mother’s eyes, her child is always the best. Lu Zhoushan smiled, relaxed and unconcerned. Knowing he couldn’t escape, he simply let his mother do whatever she wanted.
