“My Nephew’s Wife Became My Wife: The Big Shot of the Era Panicked” Chapter 12

Chapter 12: If It’s Convenient, Shall We Start Dating Tomorrow?

That smile—like a delicate flower reflecting on water, beauty that could topple cities—made Lu Zhoushan momentarily dazed as he looked at her.

His heart actually skipped a beat.

But after all, he wasn’t an ordinary man, and quickly regained his composure.

With calm elegance, the man smiled gracefully. “It’s an honor.”

Yes, Lu Zhoushan genuinely felt honored. On his very first blind date, he had met such a beautiful young woman—and more than that, her speech, her poise, and the grace in her every gesture all stirred his heart.

Even he didn’t quite want to admit how affected he was—his mind and heart had clearly been shaken.

Naturally, their conversation flowed even more smoothly from there. It was an enjoyable exchange.

Through their chatting, Lu Zhoushan discovered that the young lady before him spoke gently and softly, had just graduated high school, and was excellent in many ways. Though much younger than him, she spoke with thoughtfulness and insight. Their conversation had gone on so long they’d refilled the tea three times without a single awkward pause.

Lu Zhoushan found himself moved. He remembered just last night, he hadn’t even been interested in this blind date—he’d been more focused on how to politely decline the girl. Now, that contrast almost felt like a slap in the face.

In this situation, of course he couldn’t say anything about rejection. In fact, the thought never even crossed his mind anymore.

Jiang Xiaoci’s mind had also begun working quickly. Considering Lu Yaozu’s personality, if the report he made this time failed, he and Bai Miaomiao would certainly continue plotting against her.

Her parents’ concerns were not without reason—there’s a saying, “A thief has a thousand days to plot, but you can’t guard against a thief for a thousand days.”

Their family was small and had always lived in a relatively simple and peaceful environment. People as malicious and scheming as Lu Yaozu and Bai Miaomiao were rare across two lifetimes.

Since they had already become targets, then perhaps it would be better to just… get married. Let Lu Yaozu know clearly: there was no way he’d get his hands on her family’s property. Only then could they avoid further trouble.

After all, she was the only daughter of the Jiang family.

As long as she married someone else, Lu Yaozu wouldn’t dare make any more moves on her—and certainly wouldn’t dare covet the Jiang family’s assets anymore.

And Lu Zhoushan, no doubt, was an excellent choice. Never mind his hidden identity—for status alone, he was still Lu Yaozu’s younger uncle.

With that, Lu Yaozu would have to tread carefully. How could he dare act rashly?

Especially since Lu Zhoushan was sickly.

Jiang Xiaoci looked at the man across from her—pale like fine porcelain, slender and handsome. She lowered her gaze slightly, falling into thought.

In her previous life, when she died, she remembered that Lu Zhoushan had never married. And when the Lu family pressured him about it, she happened to be there one time and heard him say: “My health isn’t great. Even if I get married, there are… certain things I probably won’t be able to manage.”

When he’d said that, it had been with a casual, joking air.

Thinking back now, Jiang Xiaoci suspected what he meant was—he wasn’t capable in that regard? If so, he really would be an ideal marriage partner.

After all, while she did want to get married to prevent Lu Yaozu from causing more trouble, she really hadn’t figured out how to deal with the “intimate” side of things. But if the groom were Lu Zhoushan, wouldn’t that issue be neatly solved?

Jiang Xiaoci couldn’t help but smile and subconsciously murmured, “Not bad. Let’s go with this.”

Her voice was a little quiet, so Lu Zhoushan didn’t catch what she said. Moreover, her smile was a bit… strange. He found her amusing—this girl had a simple nature, but she also had something about her that he couldn’t quite figure out.

And there weren’t many people in the world he couldn’t see through, given his experience and insight.

Lu Zhoushan smiled and asked, “What was that?”

Jiang Xiaoci looked up at him, realizing she’d spaced out and felt a bit embarrassed. “Uh…”

Lu Zhoushan just looked at her, gently smiling. “You spoke a bit softly just now—I didn’t quite catch it.”

His tone was indulgent and warm—he didn’t even realize it himself.

Jiang Xiaoci also sensed that he seemed particularly patient with her, which didn’t quite match his sickly and cold exterior.

She smiled and spoke candidly, “Mr. Lu, I don’t know how you feel, but I think I have a good impression of you.”

She was being very straightforward—so much so that Lu Zhoushan was momentarily stunned.

Jiang Xiaoci felt a bit shy herself. If it weren’t for her past experiences, she never would’ve had the courage to say something like that.

Lu Zhoushan looked at her for a moment, at her slightly embarrassed face, her pure and honest gaze, and his heart softened. There was both tenderness and—unexpectedly—joy blooming inside him, like ripples spreading across spring water.

Then he heard his own voice, smiling and serious: “Me too.”

Though both had their own thoughts, it was clear that through their conversation, they’d grown fond of each other. After finishing the meal, they exchanged addresses.

Jiang Xiaoci lived with her parents. Though the Jiang family had some money, they lived modestly—not in an ostentatious wealthy district.

The Jiang family had always been low-key, and even more so recently.

Lu Zhoushan, for his part, gave the address of the Lu family’s ancestral home—even though he hadn’t spent much time there in the past.

Since Jiang Xiaoci had already expressed her feelings, Lu Zhoushan felt that as a man, he couldn’t just keep letting the girl take the initiative.

Especially when she was so much younger than him—he naturally felt a desire to cherish and protect her.

So he proactively asked about Jiang Xiaoci’s schedule. “When are you usually free? If it’s convenient, I’d like to visit you.”

Since Jiang Xiaoci wasn’t currently working, she felt a little awkward. After graduating high school, she had been idle and hadn’t done anything, which made her slightly embarrassed to say.

She replied shyly, “Um, I just graduated from high school, so I’m not working yet. I’m free whenever—whatever works for you.”

Lu Zhoushan simply smiled and earnestly said, “Miss Jiang, I think I should remind you—there’s no need to be so formal with me. You don’t have to keep saying ‘Mr.’ or use honorifics. Just call me by my name.”

As he spoke, his eyes glinted with a touch of teasing humor.

Jiang Xiaoci also laughed and readily agreed, “Alright… Lu… Lu Zhoushan. Then you… you shouldn’t call me ‘Miss Jiang’ either.”

Lu Zhoushan immediately called out softly, “Xiaoci.”

His voice was warm, his lips curved in a smile. The way he looked at her made Jiang Xiaoci feel flustered. She instinctively lowered her gaze and focused on the dainty dessert in front of her, replying in a whisper, “Mm.”

Aside from sipping water, they had spent the entire time chatting—time had truly flown.

Since Jiang Xiaoci was free anytime, and Lu Zhoushan’s job was a nominal post anyway, he thought for a moment and then suggested seriously:

“If it’s convenient, shall we start dating tomorrow?”

He wasn’t a young, impulsive man anymore—at thirty-five years old, even saying something like “let’s date” was done with confidence and calm.

Only his slightly uneven breath and racing heartbeat gave him away—showing that in truth, he was a little nervous and excited. Nervous about whether she’d say yes, and eager to hear her answer.
