Chapter 4: The Strange Man
2.6 million in the account—still not enough.
Four full sets of outdoor survival gear, even with internal discounts from the club, would cost over 3 million, not including expensive items like wingsuits, jet skis, and mountain bikes.
Even if her family pooled everything together, they could barely come up with another 1 million.
Jiang Si sighed and suddenly envied Mr. Zhang’s money-making ability.
As she mulled over where she could find more funds, her eyes lit up—she had an idea!
She left the club and rushed to the stock exchange, putting all 2.6 million into shares of Shanglin Pharmaceutical R&D Company.
Today was the 3rd. Tomorrow, Shanglin would hold a global press conference.
Immediately after, the stock price would skyrocket fivefold.
By then, she’d have all the money she needed.
After the purchase, Jiang Si hurried to the warehouse.
The third vertical hydroponic planting system was halfway assembled.
She touched the freshly added nutrient soil and asked the foreman:
“Can you finish all the assembly today?”
The foreman shook his head,
“Still needs testing. At least two more days.”
Jiang Si frowned,
“Double the pay. Can it be done by tomorrow?”
The sooner she could start planting grain and vegetables, the sooner she could feel at ease.
Double the pay for the same amount of work? Of course they would do it.
The foreman beamed,
“Absolutely! We’ll have everything assembled for you by tomorrow afternoon!”
Jiang Si then went to another warehouse.
Goods were being unloaded nonstop, and the massive warehouse was already half full.
The supervising manager saw her and rushed over, sweating:
“Miss Jiang, are you handling this all by yourself?”
She had only hired him for one day. Seeing her arrive alone, he thought maybe he could make a little extra.
Without changing expression, Jiang Si said,
“My staff will be here soon. Thanks for your help today. I’ve already transferred your payment on WeChat.”
The manager looked disappointed for a second, but then he saw the 2,000 yuan and smiled broadly:
“Thanks, boss! Call me if you need anything else!”
“Sure.”
Once he left, Jiang Si turned off all surveillance cameras in the area and stored everything into her spatial dimension.
There was so much stuff—thankfully she could manipulate it with her mind—or just sorting it would have killed her with exhaustion.
Deliveries continued throughout the day. By the time she had a moment to breathe, it was already evening.
She headed to the night market, buzzing with life. Shirtless guys grilling skewers, loyal dogs lying at their owners’ feet, affectionate couples, steaming street food… the vibrant warmth of everyday life.
Unfortunately, all of this would soon vanish.
A vendor came up:
“Hey, beautiful, what can I get you?”
Used to cherishing food, Jiang Si simply ordered a seafood claypot porridge.
After a full meal, she returned home to find that the packages of medical supplies she ordered had piled up in the security room.
The elderly security guard kindly helped her carry them up. Seeing the labels—all medicine—he asked,
“Young lady, why’d you buy so much medicine?”
Jiang Si smiled,
“I’m going back to my hometown. Big family. These are all common meds. The weather’s been weird these past two years, so it’s good to stock up just in case.”
It was true—stockpiling medicine had become common in recent years.
The guard chuckled,
“Yeah, the weather’s been crazy. It’s not even June yet, and it’s already pushing 40°C. I should buy some heat relief meds for my son too.”
Jiang Si said gently,
“He’s lucky to have a caring father like you.”
“Haha, but having a daughter like you—that’s real luck!”
The old man started suggesting she meet his son, but Jiang Si politely declined, went upstairs, and rubbed her numb face.
She hadn’t spoken so much with someone in years. It felt strange.
She stripped all the packaging off the medicine boxes and stuffed them deep into her storage space—every corner mattered.
In the apocalypse, resources became increasingly scarce, and those without survival skills were usually the first to die.
Jiang Si opened Taobao and added to her cart:
All shipping to the warehouse.
Once her weapons were handled, she moved on to miscellaneous needs:
She remembered that some mutated animals could be tamed as mounts, so she bought:
For lighting, she topped up on:
If they ever found a hidden paradise, they’d need to build shelter.
She ordered:
And the basics of daily life—plastic bags, food containers, vacuum sealers—nearly forgot those.
Jiang Si browsed Taobao until 3 a.m., adding everything to her cart.
She’d pay tomorrow—once she sold the stock.
Her eyes were sore, and she was a little hungry, so she cooked a pack of instant noodles and fried two eggs.
Just as she was about to eat, she remembered something—she reopened Taobao.
She bought a dozen high-capacity USB drives, subscribed to every major entertainment site, and began downloading massive batches of human cultural content.
By the time she finished, the noodles had gone cold.
But Jiang Si ate with a light heart.
Tomorrow afternoon, once the stocks were sold and supplies delivered, she could fly home.
On May 4th, just as expected, Shanglin Pharmaceutical’s stock surged.
The broker called her, excited:
“Miss Jiang, your 2.6 million has quintupled—and it’s still going up!”
Jiang Si replied,
“Please sell all of it now.”
The broker was stunned:
“Now? This is the peak moment! Even if you want to sell, at least wait a couple more days.”
But Jiang Si couldn’t afford the delay. Soon, Shanglin’s tech would be questioned publicly, and the stock would crash.
“I’m in a hurry. Sell it.”
The broker sighed—he’d earn less commission, but still plenty.
“Alright, I’ll handle it immediately.”
With someone handling it, things went fast. By that afternoon, the money was in her account.
Over the next three days, Jiang Si:
On May 7th, she ended her apartment lease and eagerly set off for home.
As she boarded the helicopter, a strange man suddenly sat down next to her.
In weather hot enough to fry eggs, he was completely covered: gloves, face mask, sunglasses—the whole getup.
Tall and lean, with deep, striking features, he immediately gave off the vibe of a handsome man.
Two girls behind Jiang Si whispered to each other, wondering if he was a celebrity.
Jiang Si glanced at him instinctively. Just then, he looked up.
In that instant, it felt like she was being locked onto by a wild beast.
