After the apocalypse arrived, the last batch of cubs all died from infection by the zombie toxin. Even among zombies, Gu Rong was the only cub.
Gu Rong’s uniqueness also lay in the fact that he was the only cub who had successfully transformed into a zombie without dying.
Dr. Bai said, “Rongrong, is it? At two o’clock this afternoon, the company will send people to the base. You can go out then, but not right now. However, if you can’t sleep, how about I chat with you for a while?”
Gu Rong clutched his little tummy, his small face looking pitiful: “Then can we eat food while chatting? Auntie, Rongrong’s tummy is hungry.”
Dr. Bai: “…”
Auntie? This little cub really isn’t like a zombie at all.
What do zombies eat? Human flesh, human blood. This Little Zombie was crying about being hungry. Dr. Bai pondered for a moment, then picked up the walkie-talkie and ordered someone to send over two bags of refrigerated blood bags.
If not for this being the only Little Zombie cub, and looking so fair, tender, and cute, Dr. Bai would never have directly supplied him with blood bags. After the apocalypse arrived, resources in the human world became extremely scarce, especially food.
Seeing the blood bags, Gu Rong’s little face instantly beamed, his big eyes sparkling. The cub had never drunk human blood before! Didn’t expect that after being captured, he could actually eat his staple food?
Gu Rong rubbed his hands together eagerly, his gaze following the movement of the blood bags.
The researcher who brought the blood bags was a young man, looking like a college student, with quite refined and handsome features. Seeing Gu Rong, this round, chubby Little Zombie cub with a proper nose and eyes, who could even move, his eyes widened. This little cub is really a zombie? How is he no different from a human child?
The researcher was called Xiao Lin. He put down the blood bags but didn’t leave immediately.
Dr. Bai didn’t open the laboratory to let Gu Rong out. Instead, she pressed a button on the controller, and a small square opening appeared on the glass wall. She passed the blood bags through the opening.
Xiao Lin thought to himself, This Little Zombie cub looks completely harmless. Are we being too guarded? Earlier, this Little Zombie was just sleeping in the lab, sleeping so soundly, wiggling from one end of the lab to the other, not even sleeping still, looking really soft and cuddly.
Gu Rong’s entire mind was now focused on the blood bags before him. For a moment, he didn’t mind being locked up like a prisoner.
Seeing the blood bags pushed in, Gu Rong didn’t immediately pick them up to drink. Instead, he first looked at Dr. Bai’s and Xiao Lin’s expressions. Dr. Bai smiled at him, her smile always very amiable. Xiao Lin couldn’t help but chuckle. This Little Zombie actually knows how to read people’s expressions.
Dr. Bai glanced at Xiao Lin, and Xiao Lin immediately straightened his face, suppressing his smile.
Gu Rong confirmed that these blood bags were really for him and stopped pretending to be polite, reaching out to pick up a blood bag.
The blood bag needed to be twisted open to drink from. Seeing Gu Rong holding the blood bag, looking back and forth at the seal, Dr. Bai was just about to speak up and help him twist it open when she saw Gu Rong twist it open himself.
After twisting it open, Gu Rong didn’t directly put it to his mouth to drink. Instead, he pulled out a silver straw from somewhere, inserted the straw into the blood bag, and started drinking the blood like drinking milk.
Dr. Bai: “?”
Xiao Lin: “…”
Ah… Zombies drink human blood so elegantly nowadays? They even need to use a straw?
The two were stunned. Where did that straw come from? Could it be that the body search wasn’t thorough enough, allowing this cub to hide a straw?
Soon, their attention shifted.
Gu Rong had never drunk human blood before and felt a strong craving for it. He used to see other zombie uncles and aunties drinking human blood and was very envious. Now, it was finally his turn.
Gu Rong took a large sip of blood, then spat it out with a “Wah!”, getting it all over himself and the floor, his little face wrinkling up. “Stinky! So stinky!”
Gu Rong’s little face scrunched up. There was still blood left in his mouth, leaving an unbearable stench he couldn’t tolerate.
Gu Rong was wearing a pure white set of long-sleeved shirt and pants. The blood spat on his chest was particularly obvious.
Both Dr. Bai and Xiao Lin’s expressions changed.
Stinky? Impossible! How could a zombie drinking human blood find it stinky? Unless this was a fake zombie.
Gu Rong stuck out his little tongue, fanning with his small hand. Before, when he couldn’t drink human blood, besides not being able to catch prey, another major reason was that he felt the blood always smelled bad. The blood he had the chance to drink before was always from dying people. He just needed to smell it to know it was stinky. He didn’t even need to drink it; the smell alone made him gag.
But now he was a human cub, and his sense of smell wasn’t as sensitive as before. He couldn’t detect the stench, which was why he drank it directly without worry.
006 said: [Little host, logically, you are a human cub now. Even if human blood smelled bad before, now it should just smell metallic or fishy.]
Gu Rong couldn’t distinguish between stinky and fishy; anyway, it was both fishy and stinky: [Stinky blood! Zaizai won’t drink!]
Gu Rong bared his little baby teeth: “Auntie, give Zaizai brush teeth, rinse mouth! Zaizai mouth stinky!”
Dr. Bai was silent. This Little Zombie’s attributes were questionable. A blood test must be done again to see if he really was a Little Zombie.
Furthermore, Gu Rong was covered in blood, looking quite pitiful. Perhaps moved by the “Auntie,” by the time Dr. Bai reacted, she had already opened the laboratory door.
Gu Rong saw a door appear on the snow-white wall, quite surprised. After coming out, seeing the row of adjacent rooms, each containing a mutant, Gu Rong’s eyes widened further. Being a curious baby, dadada, he wanted to run over for a closer look.
Before he could run over, Xiao Lin picked him up in one swift motion.
Dr. Bai said: “First, take him to bathe and change into clean clothes, then draw some blood for re-testing.”
Xiao Lin nodded: “Okay, Dr. Bai.”
He then carried Gu Rong away.
Gu Rong’s chest was covered in blood. Xiao Lin carried him from behind, letting him sit on his arm facing backward. Gu Rong struggled twice, wanting to get down and find an exit to escape.
Xiao Lin said, “Don’t move around. After bathing, I’ll take you to eat.”
Gu Rong said: “Blood stinky! Rongrong not drink stinky blood!”
Xiao Lin smiled: “Then eat human food. I think there’s still pork rib congee in the kitchen.”
Hearing “pork rib congee,” Gu Rong, who was originally thinking of getting down to escape, immediately became obedient and still.
Bathe, eat, then Zaizai run away is also fine!
006: […]
Okay.
–
Ten minutes later, Gu Rong, washed clean and wearing new clothes, sat at the dining table eating. Dr. Bai sat opposite, watching him eat thoughtfully. Xiao Lin wasn’t present; he had taken Gu Rong’s blood sample for testing.
Gu Rong couldn’t use chopsticks and ate with a spoon himself. A small bib was tied around his neck. This bib wasn’t Gu Rong’s own but was sent over along with the food when Dr. Bai ordered it.
Gu Rong ate with great relish, his chubby little cheeks puffing out. His baby teeth weren’t fast, but his chewing speed wasn’t slow, like watching at 1.5x speed. Despite this, Gu Rong ate meticulously, chewing for a long time before swallowing, not gulping things down whole. His table manners were impeccable.
006 saw the little host was completely focused on eating, seemingly having forgotten the task. It hesitated for a moment, wondering whether to remind the little host. The task time was already less than twenty minutes away.
Gu Rong said: “Auntie, Rongrong is human child now, really not Little Zombie!”
Dr. Bai didn’t pay attention to the word “now” in Gu Rong’s sentence. After all, he was just a two-year-old cub; no one would scrutinize a cub’s linguistic precision. Dr. Bai found watching Gu Rong eat strangely addictive, like watching an eating broadcast. She smiled: “We have to wait for the test results to know.”
Gu Rong poked the needle mark on his fair little arm with one finger. Babies fear needles the most, but Rongrong didn’t cry! Rongrong strong!
Seeing little time remaining, 006 couldn’t wait for the test results. Urgently: [Little host, the task time is almost up! We must leave!]
Hearing this, Gu Rong immediately buried his head in his food bowl, speeding up his shoveling.
006: […]
Gu Rong finished eating at his fastest speed and asked Dr. Bai: “Auntie, can Zaizai pack a portion?”
Dr. Bai: “?”
006: […?]
Dr. Bai seemed not to understand: “If you’re hungry tonight, you can come over again to eat.”
Of course, that was provided the test confirmed this cub wasn’t a Little Zombie. She had already violated regulations by letting this Little Zombie out without authorization. When the company people came this afternoon, it would be impossible to let this cub out casually again.
Gu Rong thought to himself, Do task first, run first. If hungry tonight and can’t find food, run back here to eat.
006: […]
Okay, very good. Very good, little host.
Gu Rong finalized his plan and chiliu slid off the chair onto the floor.
Before Dr. Bai could react, she saw the cub on the floor being lifted by a pile of skulls, swoosh, carried away.
Before Gu Rong’s little figure disappeared, he even waved his small hand at Dr. Bai: “Bye Auntie!”
Dr. Bai: “…” W
hy were those skulls still singing lalala? They were actually alive? Why could skulls talk? Wait, did that little cub just run away?
Dr. Bai immediately pressed the alarm button. The entire laboratory erupted with sirens. She ran out chasing, but outside, there was no sign of Gu Rong; he had long since escaped.
–
Gu Rong was currently a human cub, but he had many props; escaping was completely manageable.
The skulls carried Gu Rong, rushing out of the laboratory building, their speed so fast only afterimages remained. They ran all the way to the desolate and uninhabited outskirts before stopping.
[Ding! Congratulations LittleZombieZaizai for completing the task. Gained 50,000 points~]
Although Gu Rong had only been carried, he was also very tired. Just as he was about to plop down, a skull thoughtfully rolled over, serving as a small stool for the Little Captain.
Gu Rong sat on the skull, patting the skull with his small hand. That skull grinned toothily with joy, very pleased.
The other skulls, seeing this one had snatched the opportunity, sighed with regret, rolling all over the ground, hopping like little frogs, chattering and calling for the Little Captain.
The sky was covered in haze, the surroundings a scene of desolate ruin.
Gu Rong looked up and saw a floating city in the sky, along with rolling mountain ranges. And most eye-catching was a galloping fine horse. The horse was pure white, with a pair of wings growing from its back. The distance was very far, yet it looked as large as if standing right before him. Its front hooves were raised high, as if it might misstep from the sky and fall down at any moment. But as the hooves descended, the horse remained in place, then began raising its hooves again, repeating the previous action.
Gu Rong: “?”
Huh? Gu Rong stared dumbfounded. How could there be houses, big mountains, and a large horse with wings in the sky?
006 also had its horizons broadened: [Could this be like the last instance, just an image reflected in people’s eyes? How can there be a horse in the sky? And with wings!]
This horse looked the size of a real horse right before them. At such a distance, how large must the actual horse be? Look how small airplanes look hanging in the sky; this horse was defying heaven. No, that wasn’t the point. The point was, how could a proper horse fly in the sky? However, it just simply repeated this set of actions, looking unreal.
Just then, the grass rustled susu. A zombie with half its head rotten emerged, letting out “hissing, hissing” low growls, its target locked onto Gu Rong, this little dumpling.
Gu Rong’s [Human Cub Experience Card] had two minutes left; he was still a human cub.
