Once a Noble Wife and Now a Rough man’s Beloved Chapter 81

Chapter 81 : Mood

The father and daughter stared at each other. Even Butler Hu Bo, standing outside the room, could feel the tension in the air and quietly took a step forward.

The room was filled with the scent of incense, and a breeze drifted in through the door. Song Ying lowered her stance first, bending down and bowing her head. “Your daughter is just a woman. As the saying goes, ‘If you marry a chicken, follow the chicken; if you marry a dog, follow the dog.’ Whether it’s a prince’s mansion or a general’s residence, in the end, it’s still just a life of tea, rice, oil, and salt…”

Song Jinzhuo was about to speak, but his throat suddenly tickled and he started coughing uncontrollably.

Song Ying looked up. “Father?”

Song Jinzhuo waved his hand. “Just get along with Huo Zhen. Don’t worry about anything else. Also, you need to break that bad habit of speaking nonsense. Cough cough cough…”

Song Ying: “Shall I call the court physician for you?”

Song Jinzhuo: “No, I’m fine. You may go.”

Song Ying: “Yes.”

After stepping out of the study, Song Ying still had Butler Hu Bo summon the court physician. She looked back at Song Jinzhuo’s figure, who had his back turned to her, then quietly left.

That night, Song Ying had just fallen asleep when the window frame suddenly rattled, as if something had hit it.

Faer had already fallen asleep in the side room.

Song Ying thought it was probably the wind and didn’t pay attention. But after a while, there was another tapping sound.

She got out of bed, dressed, and opened the window. The courtyard outside was dark, nothing could be seen clearly.

Huo Zhen’s voice came from the side, “Aying.”

Song Ying clutched her chest and stuck her head out, seeing Huo Zhen standing with his back against the wall.

“Are you crazy? Why are you at the Marquis’ Mansion so late at night?”

Huo Zhen smiled. “I missed you, so I came to see you. Did your father say anything to you?”

Song Ying: “No. Huo Zhen, you should go back now.”

Huo Zhen could tell she was worried about his health, and the warmth in his heart deepened.

“Don’t you think it’s romantic to meet under the moonlight?”

In the pitch-black night, he’d sneaked into the estate just to flirt with her. Song Ying felt the urge to smack him.

But he was the man she’d chosen. In the end, she endured it. She didn’t want to become a widow.

“How did you get in?”

The Marquis’ Mansion was heavily guarded. How could someone as conspicuous as Huo Zhen get in undetected?

“I crawled through a dog hole. There’s one in your abandoned back courtyard. I squeezed through. Besides, your guards are no match for me.”

Huo Zhen spoke proudly, but Song Ying didn’t share his smugness. She was worried that Song Jinzhuo had deliberately eased the security.

Her father…

Song Ying took a breath and asked, “Who gave you that idea?”

Huo Zhen: “Mo Qi and the others. They said they wanted me to experience the thrill of a secret meeting under the moon, the passionate longing of lovers before marriage.”

Song Ying said with a fake smile, “Next time, if you listen to their stupid ideas again, go have your moonlit tryst with them.”

Huo Zhen: “Uh… are you mad?”

Song Ying: “What do you think?”

Huo Zhen’s eyes shifted. With a face full of “I get it now,” he said, “Next time I’ll climb over the windows and walls of our own house.”

At this point, Song Ying could fully understand why his father was always picking on him and punishing him.

“Go back quickly. I’m sleepy.”

Just as Song Ying was about to close the window, Huo Zhen reached out and grabbed her hand. “One last thing, do you miss me?”

At that moment, the clouds in the sky parted, and the hazy moonlight shone down, making Huo Zhen’s big puppy-dog eyes sparkle like stars.

Song Ying’s heart softened. She crooked her finger at him.

Huo Zhen leaned in closer. “What is it?”

Her soft lips landed gently on his rough but clean cheek, like a dragonfly skimming water.

That light, warm kiss instantly made Huo Zhen’s entire face flush with heat.

Song Ying looked at him and smiled. “Remember the way back?”

Huo Zhen dumbly nodded, “Yeah…”

Song Ying: “It’s dark now. Be careful not to fall.”

Huo Zhen: “Yeah…”

Song Ying: “Then I’ll go to sleep?”

Huo Zhen: “Mm… huh?”

Huo Zhen only snapped out of it when he heard the sound of the window shutting. He clutched his flushed face and stared at the window with a silly grin.

This midnight rendezvous was totally worth it.

What a great idea from Mo Qi and the others!

Song Yunshan arrived at the Marquis’ Mansion before lunchtime.

Song Jinzhuo led Song Ying and the rest to welcome him outside the estate.

With the help of the young Taoist priest Shiwu (Fifteen), Song Yunshan got down from the carriage.

Song Jinzhuo greeted him respectfully, “Father.”

Song Yunshan beamed with joy. “Let’s go in.”

After entering the main hall, Song Yunshan sat in the head seat and cheerfully patted the seat beside him on the right. “Aying, come sit here. Grandfather wants you nearby.”

Song Ying: “Yes.”

Shiwu sat next to Song Ying, and Song Shihe sat beside Shiwu. He asked eagerly, “Fifteen, how long are you staying this time?”

Shiwu had a handsome face and cold, serious eyes. Although he was only half a year younger than Song Shihe, he was much more composed and mature.

He replied calmly, “I’ll leave when Elder Song returns.”

Song Shihe patted him on the shoulder and said, “Great! I’ll take you around the capital these next few days.”

Zhou scolded him lightly: “You’re being inappropriate again. Your grandfather is right here.”

Song Yunshan chuckled, “We’re all family. It’s better to keep things lively.”

Song Shihe immediately nodded, “Grandfather is right.” Then he glanced at the quiet Song Ying and added pointedly, “Unlike certain people who act all aloof and mysterious all day.”

Zhou pinched his leg under the table.

Song Shihe yelped, “Mom, why are you pinching me?”

Zhou looked like she wanted to throttle him.

Song Yunshan turned to Zhou and asked, “I heard Ruoer’s health has improved lately?”

Zhou bowed her head humbly and replied, “Yes. The Prince regent specially invited Master Yu to care for Ruoer and the baby. She’s doing much better now.”

Song Yunshan nodded, “That’s good to hear.”

Song Shihe glanced again at Song Ying, who was quietly eating, and deliberately said, “Brother-in-law treats Sister really well. He always listens to her. I heard Master Yu is a bit eccentric, and it took Brother-in-law a lot of effort to bring him home. Sister really married the right person.”

Zhou frowned and pinched him again, scolding in a low voice, “Can’t you shut your mouth even when you’re eating?”

Song Shihe just couldn’t stand Song Ying and wanted to ruin her meal out of spite.

Faer quietly clenched her fists. Should she use the spiked stick or the thick one this time?

The young master’s behind was getting thicker and thicker. Maybe both sticks?

Suddenly, Song Shihe felt a chill down his spine. He looked over and saw Faer watching him from the corner.

Faer met his gaze and gave him a goofy smile.

The chill down Song Shihe’s spine deepened.

Later, Song Jinzhuo sent Song Yunshan back to his room to rest. Song Ying also took her leave after saying a few words to Zhou.

As she strolled around to help digest her meal, she bumped into Shiwu standing at a fork in the path, clearly lost.

Faer stepped forward and asked, “Taoist Priest Fifteen, are you lost?”

Shiwu nodded awkwardly, “Elder Song and the Marquis had some things to discuss, so they told me to take a walk. But as I wandered, I forgot how to get back to the guest quarters.”

Faer looked around and asked, “Where’s the servant who was with you?”

Shiwu: “We got separated…”

Faer turned to Song Ying and said, “Miss, Taoist Priest Fifteen is lost.”

Song Ying: “Then take him back to the guest quarters.”

Faer: “Yes. Taoist Priest Fifteen, please come with me.”

Shiwu nodded politely, “Thank you.”

Song Ying waved her hand and watched them head off in one direction, then turned and walked left.

Shiwu gave Song Ying a light glance, then silently followed Faer to the right.
