Chapter 93 : Is General Huo so easily corrupted?
On the first day of marriage in Dayin, the bride and groom were expected to greet the family in the afternoon and have lunch together.
Faer gently knocked on the door. “Princess? General?”
There was no response, so she left.
Another half hour passed.
“Princess? General? It’s time to pay your respects…”
Song Ying slowly opened her eyes and turned over, nestling into Huo Zhen’s arms.
She pinched his cheek and said, “Get up. It’s time to greet the elders.”
Huo Zhen lazily scratched his chest, grabbed her hand, and mumbled, “He never used to send anyone to greet him before, but now he’s acting all high and mighty. Ignore him.”
Song Ying got up and bit the red mark on his neck.
Huo Zhen opened his eyes and said shamelessly, “Looks like you’re tired. Your bite is softer than a mosquito’s.”
“Oh? Is that so?” Song Ying’s eyes gleamed mischievously as she gave Huo Zhen a playful pat.
Huo Zhen sat up instantly. “Hiss…you’re really something!”
“Is General Huo that fragile?” Song Ying slipped out of bed, getting dressed, and called to Faer outside, “Bring some hot water.”
Faer giggled. “Yes, Princess.”
Not wanting to lose out, Huo Zhen jumped out of bed and hugged Song Ying tightly from behind.
“This is crazy. Your hair’s in the way,” he murmured, pressing his warm, powerful body against her back, still just as fiery and intense as the night before.
Huo Zhen kissed her. “Don’t think you can escape that easily…”
Faer: “Princess, shall I come in?”
Song Ying & Huo Zhen: “Wait!”
“Why’s this little girl so fast?” Huo Zhen muttered.
He tried to sneak another kiss but was stopped by Song Ying’s palm. “That’s enough. It’s the first day, we shouldn’t make your father angry.”
“Tsk….,” he muttered.
—
After getting dressed, the two of them went to the guest hall to greet Huo Leiming.
Madam Xiao Zhou and her daughter, along with Huo Zhen’s two younger brothers, were already there.
Seeing the couple arrive late, Huo Leiming’s displeasure was immediately visible on his face.
“You actually remember to show up and greet me?”
Huo Zhen, annoyed by his father’s nagging, was about to retort, but Song Ying stopped him with a look.
He took the tea Faer handed over and respectfully presented it to Huo Leiming.
“Father, please don’t be angry. There were many guests last night, and my husband drank a lot. We only just managed to rest, which is why we’re late.”
After all, neither Huo Zhen nor she had done anything wrong it was those guests who kept pushing drinks on them.
Huo Zhen’s heart fluttered at her calling him “husband,” and he raised his eyebrows proudly at Huo Leiming.
That’s my wife.
Huo Leiming ignored his foolish son, looked at Song Ying as she respectfully bent down to serve him tea, snorted, took the cup, sipped it, and then handed her a red envelope.
“Princess Changyin, I know very well what kind of things you’ve done.”
Song Ying smiled. “I wonder what deeds I’ve done that Father remembers so clearly?”
The corner of Huo Leiming’s mouth twitched. He really hadn’t wanted this marriage.
The women of the Song family were all sharp-tongued, each sharper than the last.
And the men of the Song family? Their minds were as dark and dense as the mosquitoes in the deep mountains.
In short, not a single good person among them!
His gaze landed again on Huo Zhen’s face, his son wearing that dumb, love-struck expression and Huo Leiming’s heart ached.
Of all the women, his foolish son had to choose Song Ying.
“I won’t argue with you today. Let’s eat.”
According to Dayin tradition, on the first day a bride enters her new home, she must stand beside her parents-in-law and serve them during their first meal together. Only after they pick up their chopsticks and respond may she sit down.
Huo Zhen didn’t want Song Ying to leave his side, but luckily, Huo Leiming wasn’t overly strict with the rules. He accepted the first bite Song Ying offered and let her sit.
When Song Ying married Yue Shaozhi, her in-laws weren’t present, so the couple had simply eaten together on the first day.
Now that she had married into the Huo family, Song Ying found the experience new and interesting.
In fact, she rather liked this atmosphere.
Listening to the occasional noise made by the four members of the Huo family, the corners of Song Ying’s mouth couldn’t help but lift in a smile.
“Why are you laughing?”
Caught by Huo Zhen, Song Ying wasn’t shy at all. She openly admitted, “I’m happy.”
“Happy to marry me?”
Song Ying replied, “Yes. Are you happy?”
Huo Zhen laughed, “Of course.”
Huo Leiming couldn’t take it anymore and scolded them, “Don’t talk while eating.”
Huo Zhen couldn’t stand his old father’s hypocrisy and was about to talk back, but Song Ying stopped him with a look.
Song Ying said obediently, “Yes, I’ll listen to Father.”
Sensing a gaze from across the table, Song Ying looked up and saw Ye Luoer quickly lower her head.
Am I really that scary? Surely not as scary as Huo Zhen?
After lunch, when Song Ying picked up her tea to rinse her mouth, she heard a series of similar mouth-rinsing sounds.
They really are father and son. Even the way they rinse their mouths sounds the same.
After bidding farewell to Huo Leiming and the others, Song Ying and Huo Zhen walked back hand in hand.
Huo Zhen eagerly asked, “Come on, let’s see how much the old man gave you?”
Song Ying pinched the red envelope and said, “Even though your father doesn’t like me, he was pretty generous.”
Huo Zhen replied, “That’s more like it. If it was too little, I’d make him make it up to you.”
Song Ying laughed so hard she nearly cried, “What, like you’re haggling over vegetables at the market?”
Huo Zhen said seriously, “I’m telling you, the old man is all bluff. If anything really happens, he panics worse than Wangcai in the mansion.”
Song Ying teased, “Be careful or your father will hear and beat you up again.”
Huo Zhen shrugged, “Let him hear. It’s not like it’d be the first time.”
Song Ying added, “I just saw your aunt. She seemed pretty quiet, not as naggy as you said.”
At the lunch table, the three women were eating quietly. Only the Huo father and sons were slurping loudly.
Huo Zhen explained, “That’s just because it’s the first time meeting. Once you get to know her, you’ll understand.”
Song Ying nodded slightly, “But your cousin really is as you described, very timid. I just glanced at her a few times and she looked like she wanted to bury her whole face in her bowl.”
“Tell me, did my face get scarier overnight after marrying you?”
Huo Zhen pinched her cheek and nodded with a serious face, “It did.”
Song Ying smiled dangerously, “I’ll give you one more chance to say that again.”
Huo Zhen quickly changed his tune and flattered, “That’s because you’re so beautiful. So beautiful that even my cousin feels inferior next to you.”
Song Ying replied smugly, “Barely passable.”
Just as Huo Zhen was about to launch into another round of praise, he noticed his two younger brothers walking over.
“I’ll continue praising you when we get home.”
Song Ying also noticed her two little brother-in-law.
Huo Zhen asked, “Where are you two going?”
Huo Ran replied, “To the training grounds. Want to come, big brother?”
Huo Zhen waved it off, “You guys go ahead. I’m staying with my Aying.”
Huo Ran curled his lip and left with his brother.
Huo Zhen said to Song Ying, “Don’t mind them. They’re just like the old man. That girl who sold lanterns gave them the leftover ones she couldn’t sell, and they were so happy they stayed up all night playing with them.”
“Brother!!!”
Huo Zhen: “You two haven’t left yet?”
Seeing their red faces, Huo Zhen added, “Oh, I heard you.”
So loud even a deaf person would hear it!
Knowing Huo Zhen was teasing on purpose, Song Ying pulled his hand and said, “Enough messing around. Let’s go back, I’m sleepy.”
Huo Zhen scooped her up in a hug, turned around, and proudly called out to his two younger brothers.
“I’m a married man now. I don’t have time to mess around with you anymore.”
Huo Ran & Huo Xiao, furious: ‘Who’s messing around?! So what if you have a wife!’
