Chapter 21: She Can’t Marry Him
Ye Meiping glared at her, her displeasure evident. At this moment, her daughter was actually speaking up for Jiang Xiangxiang. Was this still her beloved eldest daughter?
Had she been possessed by a ghost? Otherwise, she wouldn’t be acting like this.
Ye Meiping’s face darkened, her voice grim: “You two sisters are ganging up on me!”
Jiang Rourou said, “Mom, the most important thing now is the Lu family. Sister, have you really decided to marry Lu Jianshen? Don’t be fooled by Tian Xiu’e’s politeness. She seems easygoing, but she’s actually a formidable and fierce woman.”
Jiang Xiangxiang retorted, “Oh? I seem to remember you wanting to marry Lu Jianshen too. You forgot so quickly? Weren’t you trying to kill me?”
Jiang Rourou said, “I was just saying that casually. Forget it, I’m not arguing with you. You can believe what you want. Anyway, you’ll be living your own life, and it’s none of my business. Mom, let’s go inside and rest.”
Having said this, she dragged Ye Meiping inside, preventing her from further outbursts.
Ye Meiping was unhappy and unconvinced. She still wanted to settle the score with Jiang Xiangxiang, but before she could, she was dragged away.
Watching them go, Jiang Xiangxiang wasn’t worried. There was plenty of time to deal with them; no need to rush.
Judging by their appearance, they were probably plotting something. No matter, she would meet any challenge head-on.
They didn’t seem to have noticed anything missing from the house, otherwise, they wouldn’t be so calm. Lu Jianshen’s appeal was surprisingly strong, causing Ye Meiping and Jiang Rourou to neglect their own property.
Jiang Xiangxiang found it amusing but didn’t say anything. While getting revenge was satisfying, it was also troublesome and draining. Besides, she wanted to wait for her biological father’s return to see his reaction, which would greatly influence her final decision.
Back in her room, instead of eavesdropping on Ye Meiping and Jiang Rourou, Jiang Xiangxiang lay down on the kang (heated bed), her consciousness flashing as she entered her space to organize the things she had thrown in. She had been too busy hoarding; now it was time for a thorough check. She was finally settling down.
As soon as she entered, she saw the items she had casually tossed in – Ye Meiping and Jiang Rourou’s belongings. They weren’t valuable, but they were practical for this era.
After a quick inventory, Jiang Xiangxiang put them aside. Even if she didn’t need them, she could use them to irritate Jiang Rourou. Watching the “white lotus” go crazy would be quite entertaining.
The thought of Jiang Rourou and Ye Meiping losing their minds made Jiang Xiangxiang happy. It wasn’t that she was petty, but they had plotted to kill her, so she wouldn’t show mercy. She would do anything to annoy them.
Then, Jiang Xiangxiang took out a pearl milk tea she had bought earlier, went to the field, and checked her crops. She hadn’t had time to examine them before or after arriving. Now, she saw the crops were thriving, lush and green, some already sprouting. The entire space was vibrant.
In the orchard, the fruit trees were blossoming, growing much faster than those outside.
Jiang Xiangxiang loved strawberries. She went to the edge of the field and saw small, pale white flowers with buds, adorable little things. At this rate, she would soon be eating strawberries she had grown herself.
It seemed that the Chinese had a deep-seated obsession with farming, dreaming of returning to a self-sufficient rural life, regardless of success or failure.
Jiang Xiangxiang had achieved that dream. With a slight movement of her mind, she diverted the nearby spring water for irrigation.
Then, she retreated to her furnished little house and went to sleep. The quaint setting, combined with her silk quilt, was far more comfortable than the cold kang outside.
The original owner’s bedding was musty and smelled unpleasant. She wouldn’t endure such discomfort.
Jiang Xiangxiang felt more comfortable and relaxed in her space. Who would choose suffering when they could enjoy a good life?
She certainly wouldn’t. No one would make her suffer.
Jiang Xiangxiang slept soundly, but Ye Meiping and Jiang Rourou weren’t so fortunate.
Jiang Rourou pulled Ye Meiping into her room, carefully closing the door and ensuring there was no noise outside before saying, “Mom, we can’t just let her marry Lu Jianshen. We have to stop her.”
Ye Meiping was still angry at Jiang Rourou’s earlier behavior and gave her a cold look. “Just because you say so doesn’t mean it’s so. Rourou, whose side are you on? Your words keep changing. Are you helping me or her?”
Jiang Rourou said, “Mom, of course, I’m on your side. Look at Tian Xiu’e’s attitude today. If Jiang Xiangxiang marries into the Lu family, she’ll forget about you completely.”
Ye Meiping sighed, “I know that, but she insists on marrying him. What can I do?”
Jiang Xiangxiang was like she was possessed; she ignored Ye Meiping completely. Nothing she said worked, and it was infuriating.
Jiang Rourou felt frustrated too. She hadn’t expected Jiang Xiangxiang to move so quickly. The problem was that they didn’t even know when Lu Jianshen would propose. They had settled everything so quietly.
“Mom, think of a way. I really like Lu Jianshen. You know that. If I can’t marry him, I…”
“You can’t marry him. I won’t allow it,” Ye Meiping said, remembering the beating she had received. She didn’t want a mother-in-law like Tian Xiu’e. So, neither Jiang Xiangxiang nor Jiang Rourou could marry him. She wouldn’t agree, no matter what.
“Then I’ll die,” Jiang Rourou said tearfully. “You know there’s no more promising young man in the village than him. I’m marrying him. If you don’t help me, I won’t live.”
“Rourou!” Ye Meiping was conflicted. Lu Jianshen was indeed a good catch, but Tian Xiu’e was so difficult; she wouldn’t accept Jiang Rourou. What was the point?
Even if Jiang Rourou married him, she probably wouldn’t have a good life.
