Chapter 47: Really Okay?
She didn’t want to avoid her own heart; at least, at this moment, that’s what Jiang Xiangxiang thought.
Lu Jianshen’s eyes reddened slightly when he heard her say this. He thought Jiang Xiangxiang was going to change her mind, but it didn’t seem to be the case.
They hadn’t known each other for long, nor had they experienced much together. If she changed her mind, it would be understandable.
He wouldn’t blame her.
But since Jiang Xiangxiang trusted him so much, he would naturally reciprocate.
If the words he had just spoken were ten percent sincere, then now it was one hundred percent, and the favorability rating was soaring.
Jiang Chengshan was dumbfounded by her words, his heart aching. His beloved daughter was about to go to another man’s house in the blink of an eye.
He felt uncomfortable and a little heartbroken. It was so hard.
What to do?
Jiang Xiangxiang’s expression was firm: “Dad, there’s no one better than Lu Jianshen in the whole village. Do you want me to marry a peasant and live in this village for the rest of my life?”
Jiang Chengshan: “This… this…”
Indeed, with their conditions here, the young people who truly went out into the world were few and far between, almost nonexistent.
If they missed Lu Jianshen, finding another outstanding young man would be difficult.
Jiang Xiangxiang: “Regardless of whether Lu Jianshen’s vows are reliable or not, he himself is fine. We know him well, and he’s fairly decent.”
Jiang Chengshan: “Have you decided?”
Jiang Xiangxiang: “Yes.”
The decision was made, and there was nothing more to say.
Sooner or later, she had to get married. Not getting married in this era was unrealistic, and she also wanted to leave this place. These were all obvious problems.
Jiang Xiangxiang didn’t think that after Jiang Chengshan rejected Lu Jianshen, he could let her remain unmarried. If that were the case, that would be fine too.
However, rather than listening to him and falling into an endless cycle of internal conflict, it was better to take a gamble.
Jiang Chengshan stepped back, clutching his chest and holding onto the octagonal table, finally relenting: “Forget it, Lu Jianshen, go back first. We’ll talk about it when we formally meet.”
According to rural customs, both parties would meet beforehand for a formal engagement. However, Jiang Chengshan wasn’t around before, and with Ye Meiping and Jiang Rourou’s personalities, it was already difficult enough for them to agree to the engagement, let alone a formal meeting. Letting them come and disrupt things?
Therefore, Lu Jianshen hadn’t even mentioned it when he came. Now that Jiang Chengshan was back, things were different.
They had to do what they had to do; they couldn’t be ambiguous.
Lu Jianshen wasn’t sure what Jiang Chengshan was up to and tentatively asked: “Dad, when should we meet formally? Tomorrow?”
Jiang Chengshan’s tone was heavy: “Fine, I understand. Go now. I need to talk to my daughter!”
He was about to explode. Lu Jianshen seemed honest, but he kept doing foolish things. It was infuriating.
Lu Jianshen touched his nose dejectedly and turned to leave. Before leaving, he couldn’t help but look back at Jiang Xiangxiang, expressing his reluctance perfectly.
Jiang Chengshan stepped forward, blocking Jiang Xiangxiang from view, shielding her from his gaze. Look, look, what’s there to look at!
He was trying to make him angry, daring to flirt with his daughter right in front of him.
Jiang Chengshan regretted returning too late, allowing Lu Jianshen to succeed so easily. He was exasperated, the more he thought about it, the angrier he became.
Lu Jianshen didn’t mind his father-in-law’s attitude; he even smiled slightly at him, then waved goodbye to Jiang Xiangxiang before leaving.
Jiang Xiangxiang watched his back and couldn’t help but laugh.
Jiang Chengshan turned around to see her smiling like a flower, and immediately felt a sharp pain in his chest. He felt uncomfortable, feeling like he had lost out in this situation.
“Xiangxiang…”
“Dad, I’ve already agreed. Going back on my word wouldn’t be good, right?”
“You!”
“I think he’s pretty good. We can get to know each other.” Jiang Xiangxiang whispered: “Or, you could take it slow, or try getting to know him before making a decision.”
“What use is my decision?” Jiang Chengshan said angrily: “How’s your leg? Are you injured? Why don’t you sit down and rest.”
“I, I’m fine.” Jiang Xiangxiang was startled. She never expected him to show concern, and for a moment, she felt a little sad. No matter what, after being here for so long, Jiang Chengshan was the first person to give her a sense of home.
Jiang Chengshan looked at her with a somewhat uncertain expression. If she was really fine, then Lu Jianshen hugging her was just taking advantage of the situation.
But, was she really okay?
Seeing his disbelief, Jiang Xiangxiang stamped her foot: “Dad, I’m really fine. It was probably a dislocation before. Lu Jianshen corrected it for me. Otherwise, he would have taken me to see a doctor.”
Jiang Chengshan: “You’re just trying to speak well of him!”
It seemed that Jiang Xiangxiang was wholeheartedly devoted to Lu Jianshen, speaking and acting entirely from his perspective.
How could this be?
Jiang Chengshan felt a little unhappy and resentful, looking very stifled.
Jiang Xiangxiang felt a little guilty. She really didn’t know about Old Liu, otherwise, she wouldn’t have done this.
Who would have known that Ye Meiping wanted to kill her and went to such lengths, even selling her. Now, she had sold herself, which was a relief.
If Jiang Chengshan was unreasonable, it would be fine, and she wouldn’t feel guilty.
But Jiang Chengshan was actually quite good to her, and she had indirectly destroyed his family. She wasn’t the original owner, so she felt quite awkward.
Maybe she should think of a way to get them released a little earlier?
