Only One Year Left to Live? Flirting Madly with the Crazy Crown Prince to Survive! Chapter 20: Can I… Stay in Your Room Tonight?

Fafa: [Master, you’re overthinking it!]

Yan Yuning: […]

“Ningning, Brother Yu, I’m a bit tired. I’ll head back to my room first.” Yan Shiyao forced a faint smile.

Fafa: [Sigh! She’s always like this—every time it’s about Qi Qingchen, she just…]

[Stop. Keep those thoughts to yourself next time. She’s my sister—don’t vent to me!!!]

Fafa: [I don’t even know why Xuan Yanyu insists on marrying her. She’s so timid—how could she ever be the queen of a nation?!]

Yan Yuning: […]

After Yan Shiyao left, only Xuan YanYu and Yan Yuning remained in the dining hall, not even a maid in sight. The room fell into silence.

“Where did you go earlier?”

“Why did you hurt Luo Xuan?”

They spoke almost simultaneously, locking eyes.

“Earlier, I was locked in my room by Luo Xuan.” The memory made Yan Yuning fume.

Xuan Yanyu’s pupils darkened.

Yan Yuning picked up a sweet potato from the table and was about to take a bite when the heat made her yank her hand back, clutching her earlobes. “Xuan Yanyu, quick—take this for me!”

She tossed the sweet potato straight into Xuan Yanyu’s hands, then blew on her fingers.

Her cheeks puffed out as she blew, making her face look round and utterly adorable.

A faint smile tugged at Xuan Yanyu’s lips.

Yan Yuning shook her sleeves, tucking her hands inside them, then tilted her head. “Here, put it in my hand.”

Xuan Yanyu arched a brow and placed the sweet potato onto her palm, now shielded by her sleeve.

Taking a bite, Yan Yuning scooted closer to him, her voice sugary sweet. “Can we discuss something?”

The man suddenly leaned down, his warm breath brushing against her ear, his voice roughened. “Hmm?”

The air thickened with an ambiguous tension. Yan Yuning blinked rapidly, biting her lower lip before whispering, “Can I… stay in your room tonight?”

She had thought it through—her sister was out of the question (she couldn’t even protect herself), Qi Qingchen was no good (if Luo Xuan found out, she’d be dead faster), so Xuan Yanyu was her best option. If she hid in his room, Luo Xuan wouldn’t dare touch her.

Xuan Yanyu’s Adam’s apple bobbed slowly, his voice low and husky. “What did you say?”

Yan Yuning swallowed. His slightly hoarse voice was… oddly captivating.

“Then… can you lend me Ye Chen instead?” She looked up at him.

The man gritted his teeth and let out a cold laugh. “Don’t even think about it.”

“If you won’t lend him to me… can I at least stay with you for the night?” Yan Yuning asked meekly.

Fafa: [Master, he won’t even lend you Ye Chen—you think he’ll let you stay?]

Yan Yuning: […]

Xuan Yanyu cleared his throat awkwardly and turned to leave the dining hall.

“?” Yan Yuning nibbled on her sweet potato, chasing after him. “Xuan Yanyu, is that a yes?”

When he didn’t answer, she quickened her steps. “Lord Xuan, Brother Xuan, say something! Can I?”

“Xuan Yanyu! Then just lend me Ye Chen! I won’t take him for free—I’ll have my sister pay you, okay?!”

“Why would your sister pay?” The man halted abruptly.

The girl replied matter-of-factly, “Because I don’t have money.”

Xuan Yanyu couldn’t help but chuckle.

Yan Yuning blinked. “So… you agree?”

“I didn’t.”

“Please agree…” Yan Yuning tugged at his sleeve, her voice dripping with honeyed sweetness.

Their voices gradually faded from the dining hall.

Night grew deeper as Yan Yuning pushed open the door to Xuan Yanyu’s chamber, arms laden with plates of pastries.

Though no matter how much she pleaded, Xuan Yanyu had refused to lend her Ye Chen, he had relented in the end—allowing her to stay in his room for the night.

Fafa: [Master, thank goodness the author didn’t stick to ancient-era sensibilities for this setting. Otherwise, your behavior right now… tsk.]

Yan Yuning: […]

The moment she stepped inside, Ye Chen spotted her and shot her an undisguised glare.

Yan Yuning: “?”

“When are you returning to the Prime Minister’s residence?” Ye Chen’s tone was sharp.

He had a feeling—if this continued, something disastrous would happen.

“Where’s Xuan Yanyu?” Yan Yuning countered instead of answering.

“Our young master is occupied with matters. If you’re so afraid, why not return to the Prime Minister’s residence at once?”

A faint smirk curled Yan Yuning’s lips. “Should I tell my sister that Xuan Yanyu’s subordinate is bullying me?”

Xuan Yanyu had abandoned his position as crown prince just to follow her sister to Qilan Kingdom. If her sister found out his subordinate was harassing her, she’d surely blame Xuan Yanyu—and then Ye Chen would be in deep trouble.

And he still had the nerve to tell her to go back? So she could wait to be killed?!

“You—” Ye Chen clenched his jaw. “Second Miss Yan, if you refuse to return simply because you fear the Prime Minister’s wife, then fine. Let Ye Jian stay by your side as protection.” He switched tactics, still trying to persuade her.

Yan Yuning plucked a candied fruit from a plate and popped it into her mouth, ignoring him.

Ye Chen gritted his teeth. “Ye Jian, you talk to her.”

Only then did Yan Yuning turn and notice Ye Jian standing in the corner.

“Second Miss Yan.” His gaze was unreadable.

Her fingers twitched slightly. This man seemed far more dangerous than Ye Chen.

“Ye Chen,” Ye Jian’s lips curled, “the eldest Miss Yan has never seen us before. Even if Second Miss complains, it won’t matter.”

Yan Yuning tilted her head, the hairpin in her locks swaying. Was this his way of telling her that tattling wouldn’t work?

Ye Chen scratched his head—he’d forgotten that detail. He only ever appeared when the eldest Miss Yan was injured, and so far, she had never seen his face.

“Why is everyone standing around?” Xuan Yanyu arched a brow as he closed the door behind him.

“Xuan Yanyu!” Yan Yuning hurried to his side, tugging at his sleeve.

Her voice was soft and sweet, the faint tremble at the end making it sound like she’d been wronged.

Xuan Yanyu glanced down at her lazily. “What’s wrong?”

Ye Chen’s heart dropped.

Without a word, Ye Jian slid the window open.

Yan Yuning frowned delicately, fingers twisting the fabric of Xuan Yanyu’s sleeve. “They’re all trying to send me back to the Prime Minister’s residence. Am I… causing trouble for you?”

She’d noticed—aside from matters concerning her sister, Xuan Yanyu was surprisingly indulgent toward her. Like last time, when she’d gone to him for help investigating Liu Sisi’s missing sister.

At first, he hadn’t wanted to get involved. But after some coaxing and pouting, he’d agreed—not only helping her investigate but even accompanying her to search.

And this time too—just a bit of pleading, and he’d let her stay.

The man’s lips thinned. “They?”

Ye Chen’s face paled.

In one swift motion, Ye Jian vaulted out the window, tossing back, “Young Master, rest well. I won’t disturb you further.”

With a flick of his wrist, the window snapped shut behind him.

Ye Chen cursed inwardly.

No wonder His Highness always called him an idiot!

Under Ye Chen’s nervous gaze, Yan Yuning fought to suppress a smirk. “I was joking.”

Ye Chen exhaled in relief.

Xuan Yanyu shot him a sidelong glance.

Ye Chen’s eye twitched. He quickly clasped his hands and bowed. “Yo—Young Master, the night is late. You should retire early.”

With that, he hastily retreated from the room.
