Chapter 27 Cousin Shen Ping
She walked to the place where she was buried, stood there silently for a few minutes before leaving the space, and took a box of Kung Pao chicken with rice and a box of egg tarts with her. Sitting on the kang, she ate her meal while thinking about how to deal with the things under the plastic bags. If only the space had a storage warehouse, she could kill all the chickens, ducks, and geese and exchange them for money, keeping only a few. Also, the mature grains and vegetables in the field could be harvested and allowed to grow again. With things on her mind, she ate quickly, and after filling her stomach two-thirds full, she sent the lunchbox and egg tart packaging back to the space, took her work-point notebook, and left home. She walked along, greeting everyone, and soon arrived at the field. The afternoon work was faster than the morning.
Everyone wanted to finish the collective work quickly so they could have time to do their own things. While she and Sister-in-law Xiufang were talking about Zhu Sanni’s injury, the first person called out. After the first, there was a second, and soon, the whole team finished their work and went home one after another. The remaining three or two intellectuals were still working slowly, not at all anxious like the villagers. He Cao, who had already gone home to tidy up and was carrying a vegetable basket, looked at the three or two intellectuals in the field with disdain.
“Wanqing, how much longer until we can leave?” He Wanqing, who was talking to the female intellectual Hu Yue, looked up at He Cao when she heard her call, then lowered her head and instructed Hu Yue, “Your wrist doesn’t hurt, where does it hurt?
Look at you, you dug a hole, Liu Qing was so scared she ran so far.” She shook her head, picked up the hoe in Hu Yue’s hand and demonstrated, “Look, this land has been turned over, so you don’t have to use force like you’re dealing with an enemy, just lift it up and then dig back down. Right, remember not to dig into your own foot, or you’ll be the one suffering.” She handed the hoe back to Hu Yue, let Liu Qing throw the seeds in, watched them gradually get used to it, then sat down on the edge of the field, completely ignoring He Cao who was still calling her. Zhang Lei, the male intellectual who was working on the other side, finally finished his work and waved to her.
He waited until she finished recording the work points before carrying his hoe and leaving with his partner. There were only four people left in the field: two intellectuals planting seeds, her, and He Cao who was coming from the head of the field. She was swaying the wild grass in her hand, looking up at He Cao who was walking towards her with disdain, and snorted in her heart. She couldn’t even stand this, what would she do in the future? Thinking about her past life in the field, her eyes were bloodshot. It wasn’t until He Cao called her again that she closed her eyes and hid the emotions in her eyes. When she opened them again, she was as clueless as before (stupid, clumsy, and easily fooled). “Hey, Sister Cao, why are you here?” she asked in feigned surprise, but she didn’t get up from her seat and automatically ignored the disdain in her eyes.
“I finished my work, I went to your house to look for you to go up the mountain, and then I found out you hadn’t finished work yet, so I came to find you. By the way, I brought your basket and sickle, let’s go up the mountain together later! I just found out at the foot of the mountain that there are quite a few people going up today, so if we don’t go early, we might not even be able to find any wild vegetables later.” He Cao suppressed the fire in her heart and spoke in a gentle voice. Looking at her, she signaled that she could go. Seeing this, He Wanqing was about to refuse, but the voices of Hu Yue and the others came, “He Wanqing, we’re done, we’re only doing this much today.” “Okay, I’m coming.” She replied in a loud voice, threw away the wild grass in her hand, looked at He Cao, “You wait for me at the head of the field, I’ll be there in a minute.”
Before she could answer, she ran straight to the two who had already reached the head of the field, checked them, found that they were both qualified, recorded six work points for each of them, and then followed them to the head of the field. “He Wanqing, are you going to the mountain to dig for wild vegetables?” Hu Yue, who had a carefree personality, looked at He Cao behind her who was carrying a vegetable basket and asked. “Yes, why, do you two want to go too?” If they also went, it wouldn’t be bad, she just didn’t want to be alone with He Cao, because then her fists would unconsciously want to hit her face. “Can we?” Liu Qing looked at He Cao behind her whose face was not good. “Of course, it’s safer with more people.”
She glanced at He Cao who was unwilling, and happily decided. If she couldn’t hold back later, she could do it in a hidden place, and there would be someone to prove that it wasn’t her. “Okay, we’ll go back and get our things, see you at the foot of the mountain.” “Okay.” Watching the two of them carry their hoes and corn seeds and run away, she slowly walked towards the foot of the mountain. As for the vegetable basket and sickle in He Cao’s hands, she chose to forget about them, she would talk about it on the mountain. “Cousin, sister, I came to find you to go up the mountain.” Suddenly, a woman in a floral shirt appeared at the head of the field, waving at her.
He Wanqing narrowed her eyes, looked at her cousin who suddenly appeared, then looked at He Cao behind her, and the clever He Wanqing knew that her cousin Shen Ping must have been sent by her grandmother. “Stay there, I’ll be right there.” Seeing that she was slow to respond and was about to come in, He Wanqing quickly responded.
Originally, she wanted to walk slowly, but after Shen Ping arrived, she quickened her pace and quickly walked to the head of the field, completely forgetting about He Cao behind her. He Cao was so angry that she almost bit her lip, but when she thought about her plan, she forcibly suppressed it, carrying both of their vegetable baskets and running after her. Seeing her cousin coming, Shen Ping, who knew her task was complete, carried a vegetable basket in one hand and stroked her long braid with the other, standing there waiting for her. Two minutes later, He Wanqing, who had run to the head of the field, walked up to her, looked at her cousin who she hadn’t seen in many years, and almost burst into tears.
This cousin had lived with her since she was a child, and they had a good relationship. After she became like that in her previous life, her cousin didn’t fall behind either. After she stayed with her and didn’t leave her, she died in the river, pushed in by someone. This incident made the villagers believe even more that she was a jinx who brought misfortune to her family, and the rumors spread even further. After she died, she never saw anyone from her family again, except for He Cao. Even if she met them on the road, she would take a detour to avoid bringing misfortune to them. It wasn’t until later when she went out to work and earn money that she met them again, but it was still very rare, mostly through letters or by sending money directly. “
Why aren’t you at home making dinner, what are you doing out here?” This person insisted on graduating with her, and she gritted her teeth and persevered.
And now she is the work-point recorder, she has to go to the field every day, because her grandmother doesn’t want her to work in the field, so the two of them are separated. “I was bored at home, and Second Grandma came to my house to play, she said you were going up the mountain to dig for wild vegetables, so she asked me to come find you, why, you don’t want to?” She pouted, looked at her, and then saw He Cao behind her, and a bellyful of resentment welled up in her heart. If it weren’t for the fact that the ground was not right now, she would have wanted to grab her ear and ask her if she had forgotten that she still had a younger sister.
