Chapter 91 The Leftovers Are All Sour
Walking along the field ridge, with the work points book in hand, she looked around. She looked at Shen Ping’s position, then at He Cao and Xu’s family’s position, and finally at her mother and the others. She was conflicted. Should she go and strike a blow at He Cao, or help her cousin weed, or help her mother weed? While she was conflicted, the sun slowly moved to the top, and there were calls from the field. “Forget it, I’ll just do this in the morning, and go and stimulate He Cao in the afternoon.” She glanced at the sun above, and walked briskly towards the caller.
“Third Uncle, you’re really fast today, it’s only ten o’clock and you’re done.” Looking at the two ridges of land that had been weeded clean, He Wanqing smiled and praised him. “I have to finish early, we’re building a house at home, and I have to go back to work on the construction schedule.” “Okay, Third Uncle, you can go back.” After writing down ten work points in the book, she looked up at Liu San Shu, who was eager to go home and build his house. “Okay, I’m going then.” “Ai~” Looking at his departing figure, thinking about the situation at Liu’s house, she shook her head. There was no time for extra thought, and she walked towards the next person.
Starting with the first person, she kept busy until the end of work, then stopped running around and stood on the dam, drinking the cold water that Gu Cheng’an handed her. She felt very comfortable. “Gulu~Gulu” She drank three bowls before taking the water bottle and turning to go home. Gu Cheng’an, who was beside her, hurriedly ended his conversation with Su Benjun after she turned around, and followed behind her. The frown on his face let He Wanqing know that he was very upset. “Go ahead, you and Su Benjun have finished your day’s work anyway, it doesn’t matter if you come back in the afternoon or not.”
Their brigade was very humane, if you could finish your ten work points in the morning, and had something to do in the afternoon and didn’t come, no one would say anything. Of course, if you wanted to work two more days, you could, as long as it didn’t affect the brigade’s rush harvest. “No, I’ll go back and help you make lunch, and then go back to work after you start in the afternoon.” He didn’t say where he was going, but he knew that she, being smart, would understand what he meant. “No, you go, I’ll go back to my mother’s house to eat, so you go!” Her straightforward words made Gu Cheng’an stop in his tracks. He squinted at her, seeing that she didn’t seem to be lying, he was about to say something more, when Su Benjun caught up from behind.
His eyes swept over the two of them, sensing that something was urgent, she glanced at him, turned and walked towards her mother’s house, saying, “Ride your bike, your business is important, don’t keep people waiting. As for me, don’t worry, I can cook myself.” Looking at her retreating figure, Gu Cheng’an pursed his lips: “I’ll be back tonight.” He raised his hand and waved it behind him, she smiled happily. There were still things to dig up on the mountain, he could go and have a look after work in the afternoon. As for her promise, well, she had eaten it up in the morning. She walked briskly back home, picked up the two ginseng plants she had dug up yesterday, nodded to the two people who were entering the house, and went out with her basket, heading straight for her mother’s house. She ran all the way, arriving at her mother’s house before her mother had lunch. She put the basket on the ground, looked at her mother’s lunch and frowned: “Mom, you’re just eating this for lunch?”
Cold water-soaked steamed bread and a bowl of yesterday’s leftovers. He Mu, who was about to eat, was startled by her sudden appearance, and then looked behind her. Seeing that she was alone, she put down her chopsticks: “Why are you back alone, where’s Jiang Cheng?” “He has something to do with Su Weiguo, he’s not coming back this afternoon. You haven’t answered me yet, are you just eating this for lunch?” She sat down on the edge of the kang, her face looking bad. “What’s wrong with this, it’s not like it’s not edible, and it’s fast, I can go and work on the backyard’s private plot after I finish eating.” “Don’t eat it, it’s all cold, I’ll go heat it up in the pot.”
She reached out and touched the steamed bread and the dishes, both of which were cold, and she got up from the kang, carrying the dishes, and walked to the outer room. “Come back, just make do with it, why waste firewood.” Seeing the food being carried away by her, He Mu got off the kang and followed her. Ignoring the sound behind her, she poured the food into the pot, added some water to make it into a vegetable soup, and took a few cold steamed bread from the basin and stuck them to the side of the pot with water. “It’s okay, we’re out of firewood, I’ll have Cheng’an go chop some. Besides, we didn’t cook at home, I have to eat too.”
As she said this, she put the lid on the pot, squatted down and started to light the fire. “I’ll get you something else to eat, don’t eat this, it’s a bit stale.” He Mu turned around and was about to make her some new food. “No, if you can eat it, I can eat it, it won’t poison me anyway.” The fire was lit, she looked at her mother who was leaving, and retorted unceremoniously. “You~” Knowing that the root of the problem was with herself, He Mu turned to look at her angry face, sighed: “Alright, you’re all acting up, give it to Da Huang, I’ll make some new food with you.” Really, she just wanted to take a break, and she was caught, sigh~ She quickly went to the room. Seeing that she had succeeded, He Wanqing proudly shook her hands, got up and went outside to get Da Huang’s bowl, and put all the slightly spoiled food in the pot into it.
She then put the food back in its original place, and then started to scoop water to wash the pot. While she was washing the pot, He Mu went to the backyard and picked a handful of tender vegetable leaves. By the time she had finished washing the pot, He Mu had also washed the vegetables. Looking at the clean cabbage leaves placed on the edge of the stove, she started the pot, heated the oil, poured the cabbage in and stir-fried it. After it shrunk, she added two scoops of water to the pot. On the other side, He Mu, who was rolling out the noodles, had also kneaded the dough, just waiting to roll it out into noodles and then put it in the pot. Looking at her daughter who was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed, watching her, knowing that she was in the wrong, she rolled out the noodles while assuring her: “Alright, just this once, next time the food goes bad, I’ll definitely feed it to Da Huang, I promise I won’t eat it myself.
” She raised her eyebrows, didn’t say anything, kicked her legs, and watched Da Huang outside eating with his mouth full of oil. “Daughter, come back and eat, what about Jiang Cheng? Did he eat?” Seeing her cold face, thinking of the guilty thing, He Mu changed the subject. “He went to the commune to eat with Su Weiguo.” “Oh~ then next time, you tell me in advance, I’ll come back early to cook.” Looking up at the time on the clock, she suggested.
“Is it to tell you in advance so you can deal with the leftover food?” Really, she knew that food was precious, but she couldn’t waste her body! And it was just a plate of leftovers, at most add some oil, not even a bit of meat, all of it was cucumber fragrance and various wild vegetables, what was there to be reluctant to throw away! “It’s just a coincidence, I just thought that there was only a little bit left, it would be a waste to throw it away.”
“Mom, our family hasn’t reached the point of eating spoiled food, if grandma and grandpa knew, can you imagine what it would be like?” I bet the two old people would come over three times a day to check, and then go and ask her dad if he hadn’t been paid his demobilization pay, and of course, her two brothers.
