Even an Orange Cat Can Win Over a Sick and Deaf Handsome Man | Chapter 12

Chen Miansheng Is Breaking the Rules

The Next Day.

After days of continuous snowfall, the weather finally cleared. Soft sunlight fell on the blanket of snow that had accumulated overnight, glimmering faintly like waves.

Perhaps due to her cat form, Fei Yan woke up earlier than usual. The moment she opened her eyes and saw the sunlight, she joyfully bounced off the bed and ran outside into the courtyard, rolling around in the snow and sunbathing.

Chen Miansheng had already gotten up and prepared breakfast. He brought an extra portion out to the courtyard to call her in.

Fei Yan glanced up and saw that Chen Miansheng was only wearing a thin inner garment. She didn’t spare the breakfast a single look and immediately turned and darted back into the house.

Seeing that the little orange cat completely ignored him, Chen Miansheng raised his eyebrows helplessly.

What did he do this time to offend this little ancestor?

Moments later, the orange cat dragged yesterday’s fur-lined coat over to him, let go with her teeth, and used her fluffy little head to nudge the coat toward him. Her intention was crystal clear.

Chen Miansheng said, “The weather’s nice today. It’s not cold.”

Fei Yan ignored him completely and stubbornly pushed the coat in front of him again.

Not cold, my paw. With your sickly body, after coughing like that yesterday and still not learning your lesson—if your illness worsens, who’ll be the one suffering?

She wrinkled her nose. Taking advantage of the fact that she could only meow and that Chen Miansheng couldn’t hear her, she gave two forceful “peh peh” sounds in his direction, which clearly meant, “Put it on, now.”

But right after those two words came out, Fei Yan froze.

Those two “peh” sounds hadn’t turned into meows—they came out in her original human voice.

Wait a second… It’s not even nighttime yet. Why is the cooldown gone?

Fei Yan tried to suppress her confusion. Figuring she had already said two words, she lowered her head and quietly added one more.

Then she looked up, pushing her luck.

To her surprise, when she opened her mouth again, the sound that came out was still unmistakably her own voice.

Fei Yan: “!”

Did the system rule fail?

Fei Yan quickly turned her head to the side and called out urgently in her mind: “Thirteen, come out!”

[Hello, Host. Thirteen is here at your service.]

Fei Yan: “What just happened? Didn’t you say I could only speak three one-word sentences per day?”

[Due to the rising affection between Host and Designated Target, the system has randomly upgraded the ‘Siren’s Three Sentences’ attribute to the ‘Mid-Level Option,’ allowing you to speak up to 100 words per day.]

Fei Yan: “?”

All she did was drag over a fur coat for Chen Miansheng, and that counts as rising affection?

Does he really like it that much when someone brings him a fur coat?

Then she would make sure that fur coats appeared in his sight 24/7.

[Host, the rising affection level occurred yesterday.]

Yesterday?

She wrinkled her nose but didn’t have time to think about what exactly happened yesterday, because Chen Miansheng called her name: “Little Orange?”

Only then did Fei Yan remember he was still standing right in front of her. She’d been frozen in place, which must’ve looked strange.

To Chen Miansheng, the little orange cat certainly looked odd. Seeing her keep her round orange butt facing him, he thought she was still mad at him for not putting on the coat, and was throwing a silent tantrum. With no better solution, he helplessly reached out and gently poked her back with his fingertip, softly saying, “Don’t be mad. I’ll put it on, okay?”

Hearing that, Fei Yan, who had been wracking her brain on how to brush things off, suddenly froze, her tail suddenly stopped in its tracks.

So Chen Miansheng misunderstood her intentions like this?

A truly corporate-level interpretation.

Relieved, she took the convenient excuse he’d unknowingly provided and slowly turned around to rub her head against him.

Today, both the human and the cat had woken early. With nothing to do at home and it being too soon to head to the medicine hall, Chen Miansheng thought for a moment and bent down to ask, “Wanna check out the marketplace? We can pick up some meat for you too.”

Although the East Market of Dongfeng Town was on the way to the medicine hall, they had been too focused on getting there over the past few days to pay it any attention. Now, hearing him suggest it, Fei Yan felt quite tempted.

The very next second, the little orange cat jumped into his arms all on her own. Spotting that the fur coat on him was crooked, she even reached out a paw and earnestly straightened it.

Chen Miansheng chuckled. The more he looked at his little orange cat, the cuter she seemed. He adjusted his arms slightly to make her more comfortable in his hold, then headed out the door.

Perhaps because of the good weather, the marketplace was livelier than usual today.

The little orange cat lay obediently in Chen Miansheng’s arms, her round eyes darting about curiously.

True to his word, Chen Miansheng first bought two jin (about a kilogram) of pork belly for her, then added half a jin of lamb leg bones—more than enough to last her a while.

Fei Yan stared longingly at the two bundles of meat, already picturing them lying gloriously in her food bowl.

Her greedy expression didn’t escape Chen Miansheng’s notice. He lowered his gaze, gently hooked a finger under her chin, and chuckled soundlessly. “Little glutton.”

Fei Yan originally intended to swat at him in protest, but caught a glimpse of the meat in his hands and thought better of it.

Forget it. For the sake of the meat, the noble Fei Mao Mao would not stoop to arguing with a foolish human.

She seemed to have completely forgotten her original identity.

Fei Yan sway her tail lazily. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a shop, and her ears immediately perked up. She let out a sharp “meow.”

Chen Miansheng couldn’t hear her and kept walking calmly. But the orange kitten suddenly jumped from his arms to the ground and plopped down in place, refusing to move.

Seeing this, Chen Miansheng raised his brows slightly and asked patiently, “What’s wrong?”

The little orange cat flicked her tail toward one of the shops, signaling for Chen Miansheng to look that way.

Following the direction of her tail, Chen Miansheng spotted a hand warmer store.

Lowering his eyes, he pondered for a moment, then guessed, “You want me to buy a hand warmer?”

The little orange cat wagged her tail excitedly.

Chen Miansheng was silent for a few seconds, then suddenly the corners of his mouth curved upward.

He raised his gaze, eyes gleaming with amusement. “With you as my personal hand warmer, why spend money on one? Wouldn’t that be a waste?”

The little orange cat immediately looked up at him, her face full of disbelief, clearly not expecting words like that to come out of Chen Miansheng’s mouth.

Fei Mao Mao would never be someone’s personal hand warmer.

Chen Miansheng must be dreaming!

Seeing the cat’s reaction, Chen Miansheng couldn’t help but chuckle softly, his eyes curving in amusement.

Today, he wore a plain long robe embroidered with golden thread along the edges, and a luxurious fur cloak draped over his shoulders. He looked every bit a refined and noble young master. With his already striking appearance, the slight lift at the corners of his eyes made him seem almost seductive. Fei Yan nearly lost herself staring.

She quickly looked away and clicked her tongue lightly in her mind.

Could this man be a fox spirit in disguise?

While she was spacing out, Chen Miansheng bent down and rubbed the cat’s head gently. “Just teasing. Come on, let’s go buy one.”

Fei Yan’s tail was still stiff, but after a moment, she realized he didn’t actually mean to use her as a hand warmer, and quickly trotted after him.

In truth, Chen Miansheng didn’t care much for using hand warmers. Gu Wu, who had been with him the longest, had suggested it many times, saying that with his weak constitution, having one nearby in winter would help a lot. But Chen Miansheng always refused.

Still, recalling how frightened the little orange cat had been yesterday, he figured buying one to ease her mind wouldn’t hurt.

Chen Miansheng knew the owner of the hand warmer store—Li Qing—who had come to Tong Yao Hall a few times to pick up medicine. Knowing Chen Miansheng was in poor health, he once half-jokingly recommended his hand warmers. But Chen Miansheng had always declined.

Seeing him walk in today carrying a little orange cat, Li Qing was surprised. “What wind blew Shopkeeper Chen in today?”

As soon as he said it, he remembered Chen Miansheng couldn’t hear. Asking was pointless. He froze, then offered a polite smile instead.

There were a few other customers in the store, but when they saw Chen Miansheng at the entrance, their faces changed and they quickly pushed past each other to leave.

Chen Miansheng acted as though he hadn’t noticed, his face calm and indifferent. Just as he was about to explain his purpose, he felt a gentle tug on his cloak. Looking down, he saw the little cat in his arms. “What is it?”

Fei Yan flicked her tail toward Gu Wu, who was jogging over. Chen Miansheng followed her gaze, his expression unchanged.

Gu Wu was slightly out of breath when he arrived. After respectfully bowing to Chen Miansheng, he signed, “Why are you here?”

Chen Miansheng gave a simple reply: “To buy a hand warmer.”

Gu Wu looked a little surprised.

After a moment, Chen Miansheng added, “Little Orange asked me to come.”

Gu Wu: “…”

He looked down at the little orange cat in Chen Miansheng’s arms, who had just finished yawning, and felt a little speechless.

Young Master, if you wanted to buy one, you could’ve just said so. Why blame the cat?

Of course, he didn’t say that aloud. “Please wait a moment, Young Master. I’ll speak with the shopkeeper.”

Turning to Li Qing, he said, “Shopkeeper Li, our master would like to buy a hand warmer. Do you have any recommendations?”

Before Li Qing could answer, the little cat leaped from Chen Miansheng’s arms, strutted over to a hand warmer, and meowed at him.

It was a copper hand warmer, with intricate openwork designs. Delicate, beautiful, and small enough to fit in one hand.

Chen Miansheng raised an eyebrow. “You like this one?”

The little orange cat wagged her tail enthusiastically, then jumped back into his arms.

Chen Miansheng caught her with practiced ease, tucked her into his embrace, and immediately decided, “We’ll take this one.”

Gu Wu, who hadn’t even had the chance to negotiate: “…”

Li Qing, who had prepared a whole sales pitch: “…”

Chen Miansheng might not be able to hear, but his eyes worked just fine. Seeing their reactions, he asked, puzzled, “What’s wrong? This one’s not for sale?”

Li Qing was the first to react, waving his hands quickly. “No, no! Shopkeeper Chen, your cat has excellent taste. That one’s our best-seller. Well-made, fairly priced.”

Gu Wu faithfully relayed the message in sign language, then asked Li Qing about the price.

Fei Yan lifted her chin proudly, her tail lightly tapping Chen Miansheng’s arm.

Of course.

Would she pick something bad?

“One hundred and twenty wen,” said Li Qing, then smiled at the orange cat. “Seems like Shopkeeper Chen’s cat is not only smart, but very well-behaved.”

Fei Yan flicked her tail in delight.

Yes, go on, keep praising.

Fei Mao Mao lives for compliments.

Then Li Qing clapped his hands, suddenly excited. “Just like that yellow dog Butcher Wu keeps next door!”

Fei Yan: “?”

Butcher Wu’s stall was right next to the hand warmer store. That half-pound lamb bone had come from his stall too.

Fei Yan turned her head in disbelief toward the shop next door—where a big, goofy-looking yellow dog sat panting with its tongue out, tail wagging madly behind it.

A very… not-bright-looking dog.

And he was saying she was like that

Fei Yan’s fur bristled immediately, her claws sliding out instinctively from her soft paw pads.

Why was everyone comparing her to a dog lately?!

Being closest, Chen Miansheng naturally noticed her puffed-up fur.

She’d been fine a second ago, why was she upset again?

He glanced sideways and saw Gu Wu stifling a laugh. “What is it?”

Gu Wu struggled to hold back a grin and translated Li Qing’s words exactly using sign language.

Chen Miansheng laughed softly too, his warm breath brushing the top of Fei Yan’s head, making her feel both itchy and annoyed.

You traitor, Chen Miansheng. Laughing at her too?

She was just about to explode when a large hand gently landed on her head, fingers softly pinching her ears. His voice was quiet and tender.

“Be good, little kitty.” It was Chen Miansheng’s voice.

The scent of cold pinewood grew stronger as Chen Miansheng lifted her slightly higher, his lips brushing her ear as he murmured like he was sharing a secret.

“Our Little Orange is much more well-behaved than that dog, isn’t she?”

Fei Yan’s mind blanked, her face froze, and her fury instantly dissipated.

Chen Miansheng had called her that before, but for some reason, this time his voice in her ear felt especially soft and warm—like a breeze that melts winter snow, brushing away all her irritation and complaints.

Fei Yan buried her head in her furry paws, big round eyes peeking out through the gaps, staring blankly at the floor and not daring to look anywhere else.

Unfair.

Chen Miansheng was blatantly breaking the rules.
