Even an Orange Cat Can Win Over a Sick and Deaf Handsome Man
Even an Orange Cat Can Win Over a Sick and Deaf Handsome Man | Chapter 2

Fei Mao Mao Was Taken Back Home

A stick of incense really burns out that quickly?

Fei Yan wasn’t exactly sure how much time had passed, but when she heard that, her entire cat body tensed up. If the program was terminated, wouldn’t that mean she’d never be able to turn back into a human?

But she only had one minute left. Where was she supposed to find a designated target in that time?

Wait a second.

Fei Yan suddenly lifted her little cat head. Her round feline eyes darted between Chen Miansheng and Gu Wu.

Weren’t there two perfectly available people right in front of her?

However, Gu Wu was tall and strong, and the way he looked at her wasn’t exactly friendly. On the other hand, Chen Miansheng had a gentle and kind expression, the kind of person who looked easy to get along with.

“Can I choose this one?” Fei Yan asked Thirteen in her mind. At the same time, she lifted her paw and lightly patted it a couple of times near Chen Miansheng.

[Detected that the host wants to confirm Chen Miansheng as the designated target. Confirmation successful. Congratulations, host. You’ve completed the first task. You’ve earned 1 point of affection…]

Fei Yan didn’t even pay attention to the second half of the message. All she focused on was the name — so this man was called Chen Miansheng.

She flicked her tail and stared blankly at Chen Miansheng’s unbelievably handsome face.

So good-looking. He looked like someone who had stepped straight out of a manga.

Fei Yan’s furry ears tilted back slightly as a sudden realization struck her.

Wait a minute. Based on what Thirteen said, now that Chen Miansheng was her designated target… didn’t that mean she had to make him fall in love with her?

She looked at Chen Miansheng’s face again and nearly despaired.

The only way someone like him would fall for her in this cat form would be if he had something wrong with his head. But judging from everything so far, Chen Miansheng clearly wasn’t that type.

Of course, Chen Miansheng had no idea what kind of dramatic inner monologue the little orange cat was going through. He crouched down and gently scratched her under the chin with his long, slender fingers, interrupting her thoughts.

“Little one, where did you sneak out from? Won’t your owner be worried?”

Fei Yan let out a low, soft meow and shamelessly rested her entire cat head in his palm, fully enjoying his massage.

It was just the cat instincts in her body taking over—it wasn’t that she wanted to be petted.

Absolutely not.

Looking at the orange cat’s defenseless expression, Chen Miansheng’s lips curved slightly. He looked up at Gu Wu and asked, “What do you think? Whose cat might this be?”

Gu Wu hesitated for a couple of seconds, then made a few gestures. “This cat looks too dirty. Probably doesn’t have an owner.”

Chen Miansheng looked over the filthy little orange furball and nodded thoughtfully. “What you said makes sense.”

Still squinting and enjoying the massage, Fei Yan silently typed out a question mark in her mind: “?”

Did that man even say anything? How did that ‘make sense’?

Chen Miansheng stroked her fur again. “Want to take it home and keep it?”

This time, not only Gu Wu, but even Fei Yan panicked.

She had already chosen Chen Miansheng as her designated target! If Gu Wu took her away, how would she ever get a chance to make Chen Miansheng fall for her?

So the tiny orange kitten opened her big, shiny black eyes wide, swished her fluffy tail, and carefully leaned over to rub her head against Chen Miansheng’s face. She even let out two soft little meows in her most adorable voice.

Chen Miansheng was slightly surprised by how suddenly affectionate the little orange cat became. After a moment, the corners of his eyes lifted in amusement.

“Xiao Wu, look, I think it really likes me.”

Fei Yan wanted to cry.

If it weren’t for getting Chen Miansheng to take her home, she would never stoop so low just to act cute.

This was probably the greatest shame of her entire cat life.

Shame!

Luckily, Chen Miansheng didn’t disappoint her. He lowered his lashes slightly and looked into her dark, clear eyes. “Little one, would you rather go home with Xiao Wu?”

Without hesitation, Fei Yan wrapped both her soft little paws around his arm and snuggled in close.

Chen Miansheng asked again, “You want to stay with me?”

The orange kitten rubbed against him even more enthusiastically.

Chen Miansheng raised an eyebrow, turned to Gu Wu, and said with undisguised satisfaction, “It seems to like me more.”

Gu Wu lowered his head and quickly signed, “Young master, your noble character and kindness even attract small animals.”

Fei Yan had no idea how to understand sign language, so she just stared at Gu Wu’s rapid hand gestures with a completely confused expression.

What was this guy doing throwing signs around like he was playing charades? He could clearly speak!

Then, in the very next moment, Fei Yan suddenly realized something and stared at Chen Miansheng in disbelief. A bold guess formed in her heart.

Gu Wu could speak. She had clearly heard him just moments ago.

But if he still chose to communicate with Chen Miansheng using sign language, and considering how Chen Miansheng didn’t react at all when that woman earlier was speaking to him…

Could it be that Chen Miansheng was actually the one who couldn’t hear?

That strange feeling she’d had earlier suddenly made sense now.

Chen Miansheng’s voice was smooth and gentle, very pleasant to listen to. But the odd thing was, he always spoke a little louder than most people — like he couldn’t hear his own voice and had no control over the volume.

So Chen Miansheng wasn’t as calm as he appeared. It was simply that he couldn’t hear what the woman was saying at all, and naturally couldn’t respond.

Fei Yan stared blankly at Chen Miansheng. His gentle and refined face, paired with his frail and deaf condition, made her feel a sudden tightness in her chest.

Chen Miansheng had no idea what the little orange cat was thinking. He just sensed that her mood had suddenly dropped, even her perked-up ears now drooped low.

He frowned slightly and reached out to nudge her ear. “You don’t want to come home with me?”

Of course not!

Fei Yan leaped straight back into Chen Miansheng’s arms, her fluffy tail curling around his arm with a clearly determined attitude.

“So that means you do want to come,” Chen Miansheng smiled gently, cradling the little orange cat as he slowly stood up. “Very well. Since you showed up nearby, even if you already have an owner, staying with me for now will make it easier for them to find you.”

Gu Wu seemed a bit surprised and signed, “You truly plan to keep it?”

Chen Miansheng nodded. “The weather’s been cold lately. If this little one has nowhere to go, who knows what might happen to her in the freezing night? Keeping a cat isn’t a burden to me. Think of it as saving a life and doing a good deed.”

Gu Wu immediately clasped his hands together in a respectful salute, then gestured again, “Young Master, your kindness will surely be rewarded.”

Chen Miansheng gently stroked the little cat in his arms. With his eyes lowered, it was hard to read his expression. After a moment, the corners of his lips lifted slightly in a faint, unreadable smile. “It’s getting late. You should head back now.”

Gu Wu gave another respectful bow. “Rest well, Young Master. I take my leave.”

Fei Yan didn’t understand Gu Wu’s hand gestures, but after watching him make them and turn to leave without hesitation, she stared in shock, her cat head tilting.

Judging by his attitude toward Chen Miansheng, Gu Wu clearly held him in high regard—so how could he be at ease leaving someone so sick and deaf all alone?

Gu Wu’s swift, unwavering departure proved her suspicions right.

Yes. He really was at ease.

Chen Miansheng carried Fei Yan forward, stopping soon in front of a small courtyard with a single entrance.

From what Fei Yan observed along the way, this didn’t look like the kind of city or county she’d seen in period dramas. It seemed more like a remote, rural town.

Most of the surrounding buildings were stone or thatched houses. Having a courtyard home like Chen Miansheng’s was quite rare.

As soon as he pushed the gate open, Fei Yan jumped down from his arms and confidently strutted into the courtyard, as if she had lived there all her life.

Chen Miansheng shut the gate and turned around, only to see the little orange cat acting completely at home.

He couldn’t help but chuckle and was about to say something when he suddenly turned his head and covered his mouth, erupting into a violent coughing fit.

The coughing was intense.

His frail body shook with each breath, as if the coughing might tear him apart. His already pale lips lost even more color.

Fei Yan was startled. She hadn’t expected his coughing to strike so suddenly. She rushed to his side, helplessly circling around him.

No wonder he smelled faintly of medicinal herbs. With coughing that bad, it would be strange if he wasn’t taking herbal remedies.

Unfortunately, she was now just a cat. Forget checking his pulse or diagnosing him—she couldn’t even help rub his back.

Stupid system. Stupid program.

After a long while, Chen Miansheng’s coughing finally subsided. His complexion was even paler than before, and his voice came out hoarse.

He looked down at the little orange cat rubbing against the hem of his robe. His eyes softened. “Don’t worry.”

Fei Yan bared her tiny fangs in frustration. Of course she was worried.

She still needed Chen Miansheng if she wanted to turn back into a human. Not that she wished him ill, but given how sick he was, how could he possibly have the energy to even think about romance?

Still, after all her years studying medicine, how could she—knowing someone was sick—not try to treat him? No way. She had to find a way to help him.

Fei Yan pondered this while swishing her tail and following Chen Miansheng into the woodshed.

She watched him start a fire and boil water with growing confusion, letting out a curious “meow.”

Chen Miansheng couldn’t hear her, but when Fei Yan nudged his robe again, he smiled and bent down to ruffle her fluffy head.

“Good. I’m going to give you a bath.”

Oh. So the water was for her bath—

Wait, what? A bath

The fire blazed strong and the water was soon boiling. Chen Miansheng had already prepared cool water, and when the two were mixed, the temperature became just right.

“Little one, the water’s ready.” He picked up the wooden bucket and turned around—but the little orange cat had vanished.

He raised a hand to rub his chin, looking a bit puzzled.

“Hmm? Where did the cat go?”
