Even an Orange Cat Can Win Over a Sick and Deaf Handsome Man
Even an Orange Cat Can Win Over a Sick and Deaf Handsome Man | Chapter 4

Fei Mao Mao Has a New Name

Chen Miansheng seemed not to notice the bristling fur of the little orange cat in the tub. With a calm expression, he released her tail and poured another scoop of water onto her back. His tone was casual and even: “So, you’re a little female cat.”

If Fei Yan were still in human form, she would definitely be gritting her teeth right now. She retracted her claws, restraining herself for fear that she might not be able to hold back and end up scratching that handsome face of his.

Chen Miansheng slowly lifted his eyes and casually pinched the scruff of the orange cat’s neck. The feisty and puffed-up cat instantly fell quiet and docile.

He let out a low, amused hum, lowering his voice as if talking to himself: “You’re pretty clever, little one. It seems like you understand everything I say.”

Fei Yan, who had been thinking of ways to escape his grasp, froze the moment she heard that.

What did he mean by that? Had he noticed something strange about her?

Was she doing such a bad job pretending to be a cat?

Luckily, Chen Miansheng didn’t seem interested in probing further. He stood up and fetched a clean white towel, gently draping it over the little cat’s body and began drying her.

Once she was mostly dry, he carried her to the woodshed and placed her near a stove where a fire was still burning, hoping the residual heat would finish drying her fur.

Chen Miansheng didn’t sit idle during this. He pulled out a packet of herbs from who knows where and emptied them all into a medicine pot that had already been set up, letting it simmer over a low flame.

Fei Yan felt the dampness on her body fade. She gave herself a good shake, feeling refreshed, then leapt onto the stove counter and peeked into the pot of herbs.

Chen Miansheng saw this and reached out to stop her. “Careful, little one. Don’t get too close—it’s hot.”

Fei Yan wasn’t an ordinary orange cat, so of course she wasn’t foolish. Still, she obediently stepped back a bit, keeping a safe distance from the pot.

If she wasn’t mistaken, aside from the herbs she had already smelled earlier, that packet also contained small amounts of huangshen, wuqi, and ziyi—all used to suppress coughing and asthma. But their effects were mild at best.

It seemed Chen Miansheng had been taking this medicine for quite some time. But clearly, it wasn’t working—his symptoms hadn’t improved at all.

Fei Yan quietly looked up, tilting her head as she studied Chen Miansheng’s face, trying to figure out what illness he could possibly have.

Perhaps sensing her gaze, Chen Miansheng glanced sideways and, out of habit, scratched her neck. Then he raised an eyebrow and smiled playfully. “You really do feel much nicer after a bath.”

Hearing that, Fei Yan swatted her paw in protest.

He made it sound like she had been so filthy before that it ruined the feel of her fur.

Chen Miansheng chuckled, then seemed to remember something. “Little one, do you have a name?”

Fei Yan flicked her tail. Of course she did, she just couldn’t tell him.

Chen Miansheng lowered his gaze and mused to himself, “I can’t just keep calling you ‘little one.’ Might as well give you a proper name.”

Fei Yan blinked her round eyes. With so many classical books in his study, it was clear he was a scholarly man. She suddenly found herself curious about what name he might come up with.

Chen Miansheng stroked his chin thoughtfully. “Aside from that ring of white fur on your belly, the rest of you is all a uniform orange-yellow color.”

Fei Yan sprawled out comfortably on the stove counter, stretching her limbs and preparing to roll over for a good rest.

“How about… Dahuang?” (Big Yellow)

Halfway through her roll, she froze and instantly fluffed up in anger.

What kind of awful name was that?

You’re the one who should be called Dahuang! Chen Dahuang!

Chen Miansheng squinted slightly, then dismissed the idea. “No, wait… If I remember right, Butcher Wu on East Street has a big yellow dog named that. You’re a cat. That won’t do.”

Far from feeling relieved, Fei Yan was even more furious.

So you do know you’re naming a cat!

And yet, what came next—

“How about Xiao Huang?” (Little Yellow)

“?”

“Meow meow?”

“.?”

“Wangcai?” (a common name for pet dogs)

“?”

Fei Yan could barely hold it in anymore. She was just about to swipe Chen Miansheng’s face with a paw when he suddenly said, “How about… Little Orange?”

Little Orange? Fei Yan froze, paw still in midair.

Compared to her original name “Fei Yan,” this one definitely sounded way more rustic. But after hearing the previous names, she found she could grudgingly accept it.

Afraid that Chen Miansheng might spit out something even weirder, Fei Yan reluctantly rubbed her little head against him, signaling that this name was acceptable.

Chen Miansheng was still mulling over more names when he felt a ball of fluff brushing against the back of his hand. His brows lifted slightly as he lowered his gaze and asked, “You like that name?”

The little orange cat rubbed against him again.

Chen Miansheng smiled. “Then Little Orange it is.”

❁❁❁

That night.

Fei Yan curled up in the makeshift nest Chen Miansheng had built with cotton and a wide wooden drawer, unable to fall asleep for a long time.

From what she could tell, Chen Miansheng’s illness seemed to be a chronic one, but just based on the few herbs and her observations today, she couldn’t figure out what exactly he was suffering from.

While he was brewing and drinking his medicine earlier, she had taken another stroll around the courtyard and only found a single leftover packet of herbs in the bedroom. She guessed that Chen Miansheng would likely visit the clinic soon to get more.

When that happened, she could follow him to the clinic. Maybe she could gain some insight into his illness there.

But this was ancient times after all. Most medical treatments relied on herbs and acupuncture. Given her current cat body, treating Chen Miansheng would be extremely difficult.

Just thinking about that made her feel overwhelmed. Her tail lashed back and forth irritably against the floor.

Then suddenly, something came to mind. She shot up in the nest.

Wait a second.

Didn’t she still have a system?

“Thirteen, are you there?”

[Hello, Host. How may I assist you? Thirteen is always at your service.]

“Didn’t I earn 1 point of Affection from completing today’s task? What can it be used for?”

[One point of Affection grants you a spin on the ‘Wheel of Romance.’ Whatever Attribute you land on can assist with your overall plan.]

“Wheel of Romance?”

As soon as Fei Yan finished speaking, a half-human-height circular wheel appeared in front of her, glowing faintly in the air.

It was divided into many tight segments, each labeled with a different “attribute.” The dizzying array of options made Fei Yan’s eyes go wide.

At the bottom of the wheel, her current number of Affection Points was displayed.

Fei Yan was surprised. “There are that many attributes?”

If one point only let her spin once, then trying to collect them all might take until the end of time.

[Host, your goal isn’t to collect them all.]

…Right. That made sense.

Thanks to Thirteen’s reminder, Fei Yan remembered her main task. “Can I spin the Wheel of Romance now?”

[Of course.]

The next moment, Fei Yan watched the number “1” at the bottom of the wheel turn into a “0,” and the wheel began spinning rapidly. It finally stopped on a setting titled Siren’s Three Sentences

Immediately, the words “Siren’s Three Sentences” lit up in a flash of golden light and shot straight into Fei Yan’s forehead.

Startled, Fei Yan instinctively shut her eyes tight.

[Congratulations, Host, you’ve obtained your second attribute: Siren’s Three Sentences (basic version).]

Hearing that, Fei Yan cautiously opened one eye. The wall of Chen Miansheng’s room came into view.

Still the same low angle.

She opened her other eye and lifted one furry paw.

Still a chubby, clueless orange cat. Nothing had changed.

Fei Yan wrinkled her little cat nose and muttered, “Hm?”

She had a vague feeling…

That Thirteen had just scammed her.
