Chapter 84: Rest Assured, I’m Here
Just one glance, and Fei Li was drenched in cold sweat.
It’s important to know that Fei Li, a highly educated modern intellectual who fears nothing, has one weakness—snakes!
The sight of these invertebrate crawling creatures made his skin crawl.
Standing frozen in place, he stared at the patterned python coiled around a branch.
What kind of species was this? He had never seen such a snake in a tree before.
Luo Sang also stood still, careful not to provoke the python.
The python flicked its long tongue, seemingly sensing something unusual ahead.
Fei Li looked at Luo Sang with a distressed expression. “W-will it swallow me?”
“Don’t move. Don’t make any sudden movements.”
Luo Sang, who had spent years hunting in the forest with orcs, had encountered countless wild animals but rarely saw snakes, especially not this kind of patterned python.
Fei Li felt a chill down his spine as he sensed the python continuing to close in on him.
“I’m scared!”
“Don’t move. Let me come over.”
Luo Sang moved slowly towards Fei Li, carefully controlling his breathing to avoid attracting the python’s attention.
Just as he was about to reach Fei Li, he pulled Fei Li behind him.
The python, sensing the disturbance on the ground, lifted its head and launched an attack at them.
Luo Sang blocked with his hand, but the python bit down hard on his arm.
“Luo Sang, are you alright?”
Luo Sang didn’t respond. Instead, he immediately transformed into his wolf form.
With bared fangs, Luo Sang bit down on the python’s vital spot.
The python tried to retaliate with its tail, but Fei Li used a stone knife to sever it.
Blood flowed from the python’s body, and the scent of blood was mixed with a strange odor.
Luo Sang released the python and returned to Fei Li’s side. “The smell is wrong. We need to leave immediately.”
“What’s wrong?” Fei Li was puzzled.
“Some wild animals emit a special odor in their blood when they’re injured, and used to call for help from their companions. If I’m not mistaken, we’re about to be surrounded by more pythons.”
Fei Li’s skin crawled at the thought.
One patterned python was already terrifying enough, now they might face many more?
He might not make it out alive!
He quickly climbed onto Luo Sang’s back, clutching his neck tightly and resting on his snowy white back.
Luo Sang ran forward and soon exited the forest.
Unbeknownst to them, shortly after they left, Hu Yin arrived at the spot where they had killed the python, bringing the Tiger Tribe with him.
Just as the python’s companions arrived, a fierce battle ensued between the Tiger Tribe and the pythons.
In the end, all the Tiger Tribe orcs were injured.
They harbored intense hatred for Fei Li and Luo Sang, secretly vowing to tear them apart in anger.
After leaving the forest, Luo Sang transformed back into human form, comforting the shaken Fei Li with a kiss.
“Alright, we’ve finally left the forest.”
Fei Li looked up from his embrace and was stunned.
Where were they now?
He looked at Luo Sang in confusion. “Did we take a wrong turn? Why are we in this desolate place?”
It was no wonder Fei Li was so taken aback, the vast desert before them was completely unexpected.
Who would have thought that beyond the forest lay a desert?
Fei Li recalled the map Spirit Spring had given him, confirming repeatedly that they hadn’t gone off course.
“Oh no! We have to cross this desert,” he said, feeling utterly defeated.
Though he had never been to a desert in the modern world, he had heard many stories about desert expeditions.
Such adventures were typically undertaken by people with nothing better to do and no regard for their lives.
He hadn’t expected to be forced into a desert expedition himself!
Luo Sang, having been in primitive society for so long, had never seen a desert before and appeared unconcerned. “This is a desert? I don’t think crossing it is such a big deal.”
Fei Li, with a look of despair, repeated Luo Sang’s words, “Not a big deal?”
“Don’t worry, I’m here!”
Luo Sang gave him a reassuring look and led him into the desert.
After walking for half a day with no end in sight, Fei Li became increasingly anxious.
If they encountered a sandstorm in the desert, they could be buried under the sand.
With no food or water available, it was dire.
Realizing this, Fei Li quickened his pace. “We can’t delay. We need to cross this desert immediately.”
“Why?”
“Because…” Before Fei Li could finish his sentence, a gust of wind stirred up sand in the distance, heading towards them.
“Not good.”
Fei Li shouted and immediately pulled Luo Sang to run.
Fortunately, both of them had spiritual power. In this crisis, their potential was unleashed, and they managed to sprint out of the desert.
Standing at the edge of the desert, Fei Li finally smiled. “It’s good we ran fast, otherwise, we would have been in serious trouble.”
At that moment, the injured Tiger Tribe also arrived in the desert. Seeing the boundless sand, Hu Yin was about to enter but was stopped by the Tiger Tribe orcs.
“Lord Hu Yin, this is a desert. We can’t go in.”
“Yes, our Tribe cannot survive in the desert.”
Hu Yin was taken aback but was still reluctant.
Qian Shi, having heard about the desert’s dangers, added, “I think everyone is right. Few people can survive leaving the desert. If Luo Sang and Fei Li ventured into the desert, they might already be dead.”
Reluctantly accepting the opinion, Hu Yin had to agree.
The Tiger Tribe’s pursuit ended here!
Continuing on, Luo Sang and Fei Li walked for another three days, facing countless hardships comparable to the (“Tang Monk” is a character from the Chinese novel “Journey to the West”, based on the real monk Xuanzang. Eventually, they reached the location indicated by Spirit Spring.
This place was different from what Fei Li had imagined, he originally thought it would be a paradise-like land.
Instead, it looked like an ordinary tribal area.
According to the map provided by Spirit Spring, they arrived at a lake.
From a distance, the lake’s water appears black.
As they approached, they saw that there were many water buffaloes bathing in the lake.
Fei Li was stunned. Was this really the legendary source of the spiritual spring?
This seemed too… Luo Sang’s expression mirrored his own. “Are you sure this is the spiritual spring?”
He nodded, then shook his head.
He wasn’t sure if this was the spiritual spring.
After thinking for a moment, he began calling out loudly to Spirit Spring.
After a long while, no one responded.
Just as he was about to give up, a familiar voice rang in his ears, “Fei Li, you finally arrived.”
“Comrade Spirit Spring, are you joking with me again? This black, murky lake is the source of the spiritual spring?” He glanced at the lake with disdain and contempt. The water buffaloes in the lake seemed to have noticed them too.
Spirit Spring said with a sorrowful tone, “Yes, this is indeed the source of the spiritual spring.”
“Are you really daring enough to say so?”
After a moment of calm, he fully processed Spirit Spring’s words. “This… is so different from what I expected of the spiritual spring!”
“This is why I needed your help. There are two tribes here that have been fighting for the spiritual spring for centuries. They absorb the spiritual energy from the spring and slowly transform into orcs.”
“After becoming orcs, they further destroyed the spiritual spring. Now, the spring is already overwhelmed and is about to vanish.”
Spirit Spring sighed deeply, his voice filled with sadness.
Fei Li looked again at the black lake and finally understood Spirit Spring’s words.
It was like modern humans destroying water resources, often not realizing the severity of the issue.
Then, destroying the ecological environment and causing severe ecological imbalance.
“So what do you want me to do?”
Spirit Spring put aside all the sadness and spoke in a pleading tone, “Fei Li, I know you can change this world. I hope you can purify the spiritual spring, find out why it has become like this, and restore it to its original state.”
“Purify the spiritual spring?”
Fei Li forced a smile, though inwardly he was cursing.
Did everyone really see him as a savior? Did they come to him with all their problems?
He had a refusal on the tip of his tongue but swallowed it back.
Spirit Spring had saved Luo Sang, so he owed Spirit Spring a favor.
That favor had to be repaid.
With a helpless sigh, he accepted the difficult task.
Before Spirit Spring could express gratitude, the Ox Tribe orcs emerged from the lake and slowly approached them.
Spirit Spring vanished instantly.
The Ox Tribe had lived here for many years and had never encountered any outsiders.
They were hostile towards the sudden arrival of strangers.
The Ox Tribe orcs transformed into their human forms, and the black-faced leader looked at them, “Who are you? Why are you here?”
Luo Sang instinctively shielded Fei Li behind him, his dark eyes coldly staring at the black-faced leader.
The leader sniffed the scent of the two and said coldly, “So it’s a wolf orc and a human. Why have you come to our territory?”
Upon hearing the word “human,” the Ox Tribe’s expression changed drastically.
The orcs looked at the black-faced leader, “Lord Mitu, this human actually dared to come to our territory. We can’t let him go.”
“Yes.”
“Kill him.”
“Kill him.”
Fei Li’s face showed shock and frustration. From the looks he was getting from the Ox Tribe, he saw a strong hatred.
Why did the Ox Tribe hate humans so much?
Mitu looked at Fei Li and then fixed his gaze on Luo Sang. “Wolf orc, I can let you leave our tribe, but this human must be handed over to me. I can’t let him leave here alive.”
“Why?” Fei Li asked, leaning forward.
“Because humans are all bad and should die!” Mitu glared at him, his anger blazing.
Fei Li began to regret agreeing to Spirit Spring’s request too soon.
Ah… He was too young, always thinking of being a hero.
Luo Sang snorted coldly and met Mitu’s gaze. “No way!”
“This wolf orc actually dares to defy Lord Mitu. He must not want to live.”
“Lord Mitu, kill them all. Anyone who intrudes into our tribe deserves to die!”
Luo Sang’s attitude stirred up all the Ox Tribe’s dissatisfaction.
Mitu raised his hand to quiet everyone and continued persuading Luo Sang, “We are all orcs. I don’t want to hurt you. I will give you one last chance.”
