Chapter 89: The Grudge Between Two Tribes
The painful groans of the Ox Tribe echoed in Fei Li’s ears, making him frown as he looked at the injured Ox Tribe members inside the house.
From a distance, those with lighter injuries could still make a sound.
But the more severely injured Ox Tribe members had faces as pale as death, barely holding on.
Ignoring the Ox Tribe members blocking his way, Fei Li looked directly at Mitu. “Mitu, I can really save them. You have to trust me.”
“Let them in,” Mitu said, snapping out of his grief and glancing at the two.
“Mitu, they’re with the Fox Tribe. You can’t trust them,” a Ox Tribe member protested.
Mitu roared back at him, “Then do you want to save them?”
The Ox Tribe member lowered his head in silence.
Fei Li and Luo Sang entered the house. The injured Ox Tribe members lay on dry grass, and all their wounds were turning a purplish-red.
This was a sign of poisoning!
As Fei Li moved closer to the injured orcs, Mitu stopped him, “If you dare harm my people again, I’ll personally kill you.” After saying that, Mitu let Fei Li proceed.
Luo Sang, with a grim expression, followed closely behind Fei Li as they approached the injured orcs.
Fei Li crouched down to examine their injuries.
It was clear they were poisoned, but what exactly had poisoned them?
Seeing him take so long, Mitu couldn’t help but ask anxiously, “Well? Can they be saved?”
Fei Li looked back at Mitu seriously, pacing the room as he thought about what could have poisoned them.
In primitive society, poisons mostly came from toxic insects or herbs.
Could the Fox Tribe have used poison?
Considering that the Fox Tribe could control fire, it seemed very likely that they could also use poison.
The abilities of the Fox Tribe far exceeded his basic understanding of orc tribes.
But what kind of poison did the Fox Tribe use?
“Can they be saved?” Mitu repeated.
Fei Li shook his head, “Judging by their current condition, I’m not sure.”
Hearing this, Mitu glared at him fiercely, “Aren’t you the one who claimed to be a witch doctor? Were you lying to us all along?”
“He has no obligation to save your people. You’d better understand that,” Luo Sang recalled coldly, his face darkened.
Anyone who dared to Oxy his partner would have to deal with him.
Mitu sighed quietly, sitting down on the ground in silence.
Suddenly, Fei Li squatted down in front of Ah Mao, took out a stone knife from his pocket, and made a small cut on his own arm.
The Ox Tribe members stared at him in confusion.
“Fei Li, you—” Luo Sang’s words trailed off into a long sigh.
Fei Li squeezed a bit of the purplish-red blood from Ah Mao’s wound and let it drip onto his own wound. The purplish-red blood gradually seeped into his skin and disappeared without a trace.
His body showed no adverse reaction.
“How is this possible?” Luo Sang was baffled.
Fei Li shook his head and then cut Luo Sang’s finger, dripping the purplish-red blood onto Luo Sang’s wound.
The result was exactly the same—the purplish-red blood seemed to be purified by their blood, leaving no signs of poisoning.
Mitu stepped forward and examined their wounds. “What’s going on?”
After pondering for a long time, Fei Li finally realized something.
“I understand now. This poison seems to only affect your Ox Tribe and has no effect on other tribes.”
“Is there really such a poison?” Luo Sang, following his lead, had also learned something new.
Fei Li nodded.
The Fox Tribe had indeed gone to great lengths to deal with the Ox Tribe.
“How can we detoxify it?” Mitu was not interested in the details, he just wanted a solution.
As Fei Li was thinking about which herbs to use for detoxification, Luo Sang spoke up, “Isn’t there a spiritual spring? Just use the water from it.”
“That’s right!” They both agreed, but Mitu’s face darkened. He took a step back, looking at the two of them warily.
“You really are after the spiritual spring. Don’t think I’ll let you get near it just because you’re using this excuse. No way.” For hundreds of years, the Ox Tribe and the Fox Tribe have been fighting over the spiritual spring.
Since the Ox Tribe first settled here, the spring had always belonged to them.
But later, the Fox Tribe appeared, discovered the secret of the spring, and began to use all kinds of methods to seize it.
Finally, in a great war hundreds of years ago, the Fox Tribe successfully took over the spiritual spring.
They held it for centuries.
The Fox Tribe, not knowing how to cherish the spring, had made its waters filthy.
A hundred years ago, Mitu fulfilled his ancestors’ wishes by reclaiming the spiritual spring from the foxes.
Since then, the two tribes have been in constant conflict.
The Ox Tribe has been guarding the spring ever since, not allowing anyone to approach it.
Seeing Mitu’s strong reaction, Fei Li patiently explained, “This poison is fatal to the Ox Tribe but harmless to other tribes. We can’t find a better cure right now, so the only way to detoxify it is with the spring water. If you keep delaying, you’ll be left burying your people!”
“Lord Mitu, I feel terrible. My whole body aches.”
“Lord Mitu, me too.”
“Just kill me! I don’t want to live like this.”
The injured Ox Tribe members were rolling on the ground, their foreheads covered in beads of sweat.
One of the Ox Tribe members approached, “Lord Mitu, Ah Mao is barely breathing. What should we do?”
As his people’s condition worsened, Mitu’s attitude began to shift.
“I’ll take you to the spiritual spring.”
Mitu led the two of them to the spring.
Standing by the shore, Fei Li approached the spring, looking around and noticing there were no containers to hold the water.
“We’ll have to use our hands. Scoop up as much as you can.”
Mitu immediately scooped up a large handful of water.
Luo Sang, despite being disgusted by the dark water, also scooped up some.
The three of them carried the water back to the tribe.
Fei Li dropped a single drop of the spring water onto the wound of one of the injured.
Despite the water’s dark appearance, once it touched the wound, it seeped into the skin, and the poison was instantly cleansed.
After applying the spring water to all the wounds of the injured, Fei Li finally straightened up.
“All right, the poison has been neutralized. Rest for a while, and the wounds will heal.”
Hearing this, the Ox Tribe members looked at their injured comrades, then back at Fei Li.
Their gazes toward him began to change subtly.
Mitu, looking apologetic, approached Fei Li. “I’m sorry for misunderstanding you earlier.”
“It’s okay.”
Given that they were with the Fox Tribe, it was understandable that Mitu had his suspicions.
Seeing his people gradually recovering, Mitu spoke up, “Although you saved my tribe members, you are still Fox Tribe members. I won’t kill you, but you should leave.”
Mitu’s change in attitude surprised them both.
The Fox Tribe would have eagerly imprisoned them in the village, but the Ox Tribe had no such intention.
This alone made Mitu far superior to the fox leader in Fei Li’s eyes.
Remembering the purpose of his visit, Fei Li had no intention of leaving.
After some thought, he explained the spring’s request to Mitu.
Upon hearing this, Mitu’s expression changed, and he suddenly became respectful toward Fei Li.
What the heck?
This change of attitude was too sudden!
Before Fei Li could ask for an explanation, all the Ox Tribe members prostrated themselves on the ground, performing a devout ritual before the two of them.
Luo Sang glanced at Fei Li, a hint of confusion in his eyes.
“We’ve finally waited for you,” Mitu said, his emotions becoming more intense.
“A hundred years ago, the spring appeared once and warned us to protect it and wait for the one destined to come. We’ve waited a hundred years, and finally, you’ve arrived.”
With those words, Mitu led the Ox Tribe in another bow.
Fei Li looked at the Ox Tribe in bewilderment.
A hundred years?
If it weren’t for saving Luo Sang, he wouldn’t have sought the spring’s help and agreed to its request.
It all seemed coincidental, yet somehow felt like it was destined.
He helped Mitu up, saying, “Leader, please don’t do this. I’m just an ordinary person and can’t bear such a grand gesture from your tribe.”
Mitu insisted on staying down, looking at him with apologetic eyes.
“Since you were brought here by the Spirit Spring, you are our friend. We shouldn’t have misunderstood you earlier, nor treated you with disrespect. It was all our fault.”
Mitu’s sudden change in attitude made him a bit uncomfortable.
Finally, they accepted the Ox Tribe’s apology, and only then did they get up.
Afterward, Mitu explained in full detail the grudge between the Ox and fox tribes, and why the Spirit Spring had become like this.
After listening, Fei Li and Luo Sang realized just how cunning the Fox Tribe was.
Thinking about being used by the Fox Tribe, Luo Sang felt a surge of anger in his chest.
“That damned fox leader, I’m definitely going to kill him.”
Fei Li squeezed Luo Sang’s hand, trying to soothe him.
According to the Spirit Spring’s instructions, Fei Li needed to restore the spring water to its original state.
He also had to help the Ox Tribe improve their current living conditions.
In their efforts to protect the Spirit Spring, the Ox Tribe had neglected the construction of their own village.
Looking around at the Ox Tribe’s settlement, he gradually formed a plan.
The next day, Mitu took them to the Spirit Spring.
Standing on the shore, Fei Li gazed at the murky lake water, feeling a bit emotional.
For the clear lake water to become like this, it’s no wonder the Spirit Spring sought him out.
Seeing him staring silently at the lake, Mitu asked, “Can this water be restored?”
He nodded, then shook his head.
Whether it could be restored was still uncertain—they could only try.
“From now on, don’t bathe in the Spirit Spring anymore.”
Mitu replied, “We bathe in the Spirit Spring to guard it, in case the Fox Tribe tries something.”
He patted Mitu on the shoulder, “You’ve worked hard.”
Suddenly, he remembered reading in ancient medical texts about a type of herbal juice that had the effect of purifying lake water. Looking around, he could only hope to find that herb here.
Turning back toward the lake, he noticed a strange, small sprout.
What is this?
He stepped forward and pulled out the sprout, staring at it in surprise, “This is actually lotus root.”
Luo Sang was already used to him recognizing all sorts of strange things and showed no reaction.
Mitu came over, staring at the lotus root in his hand, “Lotus root? What’s that? There’s a lot of this stuff in the Spirit Spring. We pull it out and throw it away, but it just grows back.”
Pull it out and throw it away?
Looking at the lotus root, as thick as his arm, he could only blame the Ox Tribe for not knowing its value.
“You can eat this, and since it grows in the Spirit Spring, it must carry some spiritual energy. Eating it will have many benefits.”
Luo Sang took the lotus root from his hand, “Are you sure it won’t be poisonous?”
After spending so much time with Fei Li, he had come to think of all sorts of strange poisons.
