Chapter 62
A New Way to Make Money
That night, Ped stayed in the luxury suite on the top floor of Menqiu Palace, just like Juan. Both of them were assigned rooms with the modern, youthful style favored by today’s young people.
Though their rooms were large enough for two people to stay comfortably, they didn’t stay together and parted ways at their respective doors.
Once inside the most luxurious room of the most luxurious hotel in Menqiu City, Ped didn’t care to admire the space. He immediately turned off all the lights and lay down on the bed, a faint smile curling at the corners of his lips.
It looked like a smile, but there was no warmth in his eyes.
So, I was an assassin in my past life?
It didn’t surprise me at all.
If Juan hadn’t come, I might still be in Eden. Not that it matters where I am, it’s all the same. And if I was in Eden, the tasks they gave me were essentially assassin jobs.
Of course, I might have already left Eden by now. What was the name of that old man? I can barely remember. I have no doubt that one day I’d get tired of him and just kill him. Or maybe, I’d kill everyone in Eden and leave like that?
“Then, why not be a killer, right?
After all, there’s nothing else I really want to do.
And the name might still be S11, because there’s no other name I want to use.
Ah—no matter how I think about it, that person was probably right about ninety-nine percent of what they said. If it weren’t for the “roll” I would probably be living that kind of life right now.
But it’s different now.
Turning his head, Ped looked towards the giant floor-to-ceiling window to his left. The neon lights outside instantly flooded into his eyes. His smile formed at the corners of his eyes, and he finally showed a glimmer of joy in his gaze.
Now, everything is completely different.
Just like every day in the past three years, he habitually summoned the magic book on his left hand. The pages, with an ancient aura, flipped past his eyes one by one. But he was not paying attention to them. His mind was entirely focused on the “roll” next door.
Hmm, in the past three years, every time he thought of the “roll,” he would look through this magic book. But now that the roll is right beside him, he couldn’t focus on it.
Cough cough! This isn’t good, I’m too restless! Too undignified!
Ped told himself.
But still, he really, really wanted to…
After rolling around with a pillow on the large bed for a while, Ped eventually dragged himself out of bed, pulling the blanket along with him. He thought for a moment about the “roll” and then found the wall that he felt was closest to the “roll.” Leaning against the wall, he wrapped himself in the blanket and fell asleep.
The next morning, the two of them woke up at six o’clock without prior coordination. When they opened the door, both of their hair was slightly damp, and they smelled of the same hotel toiletries, clearly just having cleaned themselves up.
“Good morning!” Ped greeted the “roll” energetically.
“Good morning.” The “roll”’s voice was as calm as usual.
They exchanged glances, and both of their mouths curled into a faint smile.
They had woken up too early, and the old man hadn’t woken up yet. Originally, they planned to go to the gym for some light exercise, but they ended up meeting the hotel manager at the elevator.
Yes, the same manager who had rushed to the “roll”‘s room with a lot of security personnel yesterday.
It was clear that he had been waiting for them. When he saw them, he immediately greeted them with a warm smile, asking how their sleep had been the previous night. Then, he candidly revealed his purpose for approaching them.
“Mr. Ped, could I ask you to help us improve our hotel’s security system? It won’t take up too much of your time; we just want to hear about any issues you may have noticed when you came here last night…”
He was being extremely polite. Ped looked at the “roll” and then nodded.
So, under the hotel manager’s lead, they took the staff-only elevator. After twisting through several hallways, they finally arrived at a room filled with surveillance screens. There, they met the head of security, who had been checking the surveillance footage all night without finding anything. Looking at the man with dark circles under his eyes, Ped shrugged and decided to explain everything that had happened during his visit.
Upon hearing that Ped had remembered to buy fish balls before arriving, the head of security’s face turned even paler. This clearly showed that they had been disregarding the hotel’s security system, but after hearing Ped’s further words, his expression grew even more serious.
“…Your building’s exterior glass is made of Qiang-type glass, which is extremely smooth, and ordinary people cannot land on it. However, this material just happens to be countered by another new material. Look at my shoes—these are made with this new material. There’s nothing special about it, but it perfectly fits with glass and metal products made from Qiang-type material, so in simple terms, I can walk on it.”
“You place too much trust in your security system and the properties of the glass. In fact, even a simple thermal imaging device would have detected me. Of course, if I noticed such a system, I would have taken additional precautions.”
“The glass on the top floor is too high, too large, and at an angle. I know you probably did it for the better visual experience of guests on the top floor, but honestly, I find that the highest level is the easiest to climb. Also, such large glass has its weaknesses. When I broke the glass yesterday, I used a bit of plant-based… superpower.” Actually, it was magic, but Ped felt there was no need to explain everything in detail to him.
“Lastly—” Looking at the head of security, whose face was growing greener and beads of sweat were starting to form, Ped continued, “Your hotel has been replicated in Nipuda, albeit on a smaller scale. However, all the details are practically identical. Anyone who wants to do something in your building can easily rehearse at the Nipuda location first.”
“What?!” Hearing this, the head of security leaped up from his chair.
With a slight smile, Ped didn’t plan to say anything more.
Of course, in the hotel manager’s eyes, this was Ped generously offering all his insights. Grateful, the hotel manager bowed and handed Ped a black card.
“This is a small token of thanks for taking up your time. Please accept it, and if you have any other suggestions, feel free to let me know,” he said, also handing Ped his business card with both hands.
Smiling, Ped casually slipped the two cards into his pocket. He didn’t say anything in the security office, but once they were outside their office area and it was just him and the “roll,” he pulled out the black card and used a small device to check the numbers on it.
“Oh” Raising an eyebrow, he showed the numbers to the “roll.” “Looks like I’ve found a new, more profitable part-time job.”
He had just pointed out a few security flaws to the Morioka Palace, and the reward he was given already far exceeded the pay for his original job here!
And it was clear that the Moriyama Gyoguchi didn’t just listen to his advice—they acted swiftly. Though the glass materials couldn’t be improved immediately, by the time old Buricha woke up and they had breakfast together again, there were no more photos of Buricha and his grandson having breakfast circulating. Instead, there was now one with Ped in it.
It was evident that since Pedro’s arrival, the hotel manager had made sweeping reforms, significantly boosting security under his management. The security was now so strict that even media personnel, who used to be able to gain access for a fee, could no longer enter.
“Well, that’s good, then. By the way, did you really hire a tester, old man?” Pedro asked casually as he enjoyed his breakfast, chatting with Old Blicha. “Just so you know, I have no idea who hired me; I’m just an ordinary college student trying to make tuition money. My involvement was limited to certain tasks. Like yesterday—I was hired to exploit a security vulnerability in the Moriqui City mansion, get to the top floor, locate your room and… Scott’s room, then stick a special marker on your windows as a sign that I completed the task.”
“Of course, once I realized it was Scott, I destroyed the marker. But if the person who hired me wasn’t you, then the task might technically be considered a failure, and you’d get a refund. In that case, you might want to think about who actually hired me.”
After finishing his bite, he took a satisfied sip of his breakfast wine. “The breakfast here is fantastic! I definitely want to come back here more often,” he declared happily.
“I did indeed hire someone to test the security here, and I’d never lie about something as crucial as my own safety,” replied Old Blicha, watching this calm young man who reminded him of his grandson. The old saying “like attracts like” certainly held true.
He appreciated this straightforward young man. Seeing both of them eating in a similar style—fast, a lot, and elegantly—Old Blicha felt his own appetite increase, as if he had grown healthier.
“The auction isn’t until the day after tomorrow. You and Scott were friends from the orphanage, weren’t you? After all this time, you must have plenty to talk about. You two can go off on your own today—take the card I gave you yesterday and buy whatever you like. No need to save money,” he said, smiling as he finished a much larger breakfast than usual.
At Old Blicha’s request, Pedro and Juan left with the white card, accompanied by a few bodyguards, and set off into the streets of Moriqui City City.
