When Ji Chenai saw the people outside the door, he instantly understood why they were there. Three people stood in front of him: a man in a police uniform who had just spoken, another man holding a little girl who looked somewhat familiar, and a well-dressed woman.
The policeman said, “You’re the one who called yesterday, right? The little girl’s father is here to thank you personally.”
Ji Chenai thought for a moment before saying, “Please, come in.” He then opened the door and let them inside.
The little girl’s father, visibly surprised to see Ji Chenai in a wheelchair, had a brief flicker of surprise in his eyes. But soon, his expression softened to one of pure gratitude as he said, “Mr. Zhou, we’re so grateful to you.”
Ji Chenai led them into the living room, where they sat down. After a brief pause, he asked, “How did you find my address?”
The man, ready to speak, suddenly hesitated, caught off guard by the unexpected question.
Ji Chenai came from a well-off family, so he quickly noticed that the man’s clothes were anything but ordinary. The watch on his wrist alone could easily buy a nice car—a clear sign of wealth, as they say, ‘The rich play with watches, the poor with cars.’ This man’s status was evidently not simple.
Before the man could respond, the woman beside him spoke up. “I apologize,” she said. “Old Yang was just so eager to thank you in person that he asked someone to find out your address in a hurry. We didn’t mean to offend you.”
Their humble demeanor caught Ji Chenai by surprise. He glanced at the little girl clinging tightly to the man and felt his heart soften. “It’s okay,” he finally said, “but I would appreciate it if you could call me first next time.”
Seeing that Ji Chenai wasn’t upset anymore, the woman sighed in relief. “Mr. Zhou, without your call, I don’t know what we would have done.” She then briefly recounted the situation.
It wasn’t an uncommon story: the nanny wasn’t careful enough while watching the child, and as a result, the little girl was abducted during an outing. The woman’s health had already been fragile, and she nearly lost her life giving birth to the girl, making it impossible for the couple to have another child. Desperate, they tried everything to find their daughter, even offering a substantial reward, but after more than a year, there was still no news. Just as they were beginning to lose hope, Ji Chenai’s call changed everything.
