Post-Apocalyptic Rebirth: Back to the Late 70s – Chapter 5

Chapter 5

After tidying up, Wu Xiaoxiao looked at the borrowed notes in the faint light.

She found reading the study notes not difficult at all. The base had provided each ability user with a reading terminal, where they could learn various kinds of knowledge.

The notes the original owner had borrowed were probably the highest level of knowledge in the village. However, to Wu Xiaoxiao, they were just the most basic introductory knowledge she had learned, and solving the problems felt effortless.

Having gained a rough understanding of the difficulty level of the knowledge here, Wu Xiaoxiao no longer focused on the notes. This was just a math notebook, and the original owner’s memories included several other subjects.

She had no problem with science and engineering subjects, but history, geography, and such were completely new to her.

Since the apocalypse, Earth’s geography and landscape had undergone significant changes. The old information no longer kept up with the changes, so it was discarded in favor of knowledge about the distribution of apocalypse bases and mutated plants and animals.

History was even less studied; such a golden age of peace and prosperity only existed in oral stories and dreams.

Therefore, Wu Xiaoxiao had no idea what era it was now or where the future was heading. But that was okay—no matter the era, knowledge was always useful.

“Xiaoxiao, don’t read anymore, it’s bad for your eyes. Rest early,” Zhang Fang said as she returned after tidying up and saw the child still sitting at the table reading the notes.

“Mm.” Wu Xiaoxiao nodded.

At this point, the light was quite dim. If it had been her body from the apocalypse, there would be no need to worry. As an ability user, she could see in the dark, and her wood-based ability also had healing effects. Even if the original body had slight nearsightedness, she could heal it.

After packing up, Wu Xiaoxiao extinguished the oil lamp and had a thought.

Now that the lamp was out, and there was no moonlight, she could still see the furniture and even her mother’s expression very clearly!

Could it be that her ability had come with her?

That would be amazing!

To be reborn in the golden age was already an incredible stroke of luck, and she never dared to imagine having abilities as well.

However, how much energy her wood ability had in this time and space, she would have to test to find out.

Wu Xiaoxiao walked effortlessly to the bed and sat down, asking, “Mom, why aren’t you going to sleep?”

Their house, though dilapidated, had two side rooms and a main room. Now that she was an adult, she had been sleeping alone all these years, while her mom slept in the room on the east side.

Zhang Fang smiled gently at the corner of her mouth. “I’m waiting for you to sleep, then I’ll call your soul.”

“I’m already this big, and you still call my soul?” Wu Xiaoxiao felt a little embarrassed. She was already grown up, yet still needed her mom to call her soul.

—-

In the original owner’s memory, adults usually called the soul of a child only a few years old. When a child was frightened, the adult would wait for the child to fall asleep, then sit by the bed, patting the child while calling their name, so the frightened soul would return to the body.

Zhang Fang gently touched Wu Xiaoxiao’s hair. “No matter how old you are, you’ll always be my good daughter. You were scared today, so I’ll call your soul, and then I’ll feel more at ease.”

Hearing her mom’s words, Wu Xiaoxiao said no more. She took down her hair and lay down, slowly regulating her breathing.

When Zhang Fang heard her breathing calm, she softly called her name twice. When she didn’t hear a response, she gently patted Wu Xiaoxiao and softly whispered, “Xiaoxiao, come back, Xiaoxiao, come back.”

She repeated the call seven times before…

—-

With light steps, she quietly made her way out of the room.

As soon as she heard the door close, Wu Xiaoxiao finally opened her eyes.

She wasn’t sure if it was psychological, but after Zhang Fang’s gentle calls earlier, the memories belonging to the original owner seemed to become even clearer in her mind.

Wu Xiaoxiao savored the peaceful warmth she hadn’t felt in a long time for a moment before falling back to sleep.

This time, there were no sharp alarm sounds in her dreams, no mutant creatures filling the sky, no teammates’ corpses, and no feelings of anxiety about the future.
