Chapter 9: Praised
“Auntie, Goudan is still weak, so hurry and take him back to rest. Don’t neglect him these days. Make sure the child eats well!” Zhao Xiulan reminded once again.
Hearing Zhao Xiulan’s words, Wu Jinhua nodded quickly and carried Goudan back home.
Meanwhile, others who were curious and had gathered around asked Zhao Xiulan, “Xiulan, how did you know how to treat snake venom? That’s quite a skill, isn’t it?”
Finding it difficult to explain, Zhao Xiulan casually replied, “I read a health manual during literacy class before. It mentioned the self-rescue methods after being bitten by a snake. I just followed what the book said and tried it, and it worked unexpectedly.”
Upon hearing Zhao Xiulan’s explanation, everyone understood. So, that’s how it was.
Nevertheless, they still admired Zhao Xiulan. It’s not easy for someone to apply knowledge from books to practical situations, and Zhao Xiulan managed to do so, which was quite impressive.
With Goudan’s situation resolved, everyone dispersed and got back to work.
Zhao Xiulan did the same, carrying her basket and continuing to cut pig grass with her sickle.
Because of her heroic act today, the production team leader, Liu Gensheng, decided to reward those who assisted in saving lives in the village. He specifically gave Zhao Xiulan an extra ten work points.
On a regular day, cutting pig grass would only earn three or four work points. Getting several extra points meant more food allocation in the future.
No one had any objections to Liu Gensheng’s arrangement. After all, everyone respected Zhao Xiulan; she had indeed done something remarkable today.
“Comrade Zhao Xiulan, I hope you will continue to uphold such acts of bravery in the future!” Liu Gensheng said with a smile, his eyes showing admiration as he looked at Zhao Xiulan.
Receiving such great benefits, Zhao Xiulan naturally felt happy. “Yes, Team Leader, I will continue to do so!”
“Good. Comrade Zhao Xiulan, you’ve worked hard today. Go home and rest!” Liu Gensheng said.
After a day of hard work, combined with the original host’s poor health, Zhao Xiulan really needed to go back and take a break, catching her breath.
Zhao Weiguo also returned from work and, upon hearing about Zhao Xiulan’s heroic act, came back full of pride. He praised Zhao Xiulan, saying, “Xiulan, well done! Being kind-hearted and helping others is the spirit we should uphold.”
In the courtyard, Li Lijuan saw Zhao Xiulan and rolled her eyes disdainfully, filled with jealousy.
Hearing the villagers praise Zhao Xiulan again today, Li Lijuan felt both angry and jealous.
Clearly, Zhao Xiulan was just a lowly servant girl. Why did everyone praise her one after another?
If anyone should be praised, it should be her.
Compared to her, Zhao Xiulan was not even worth mentioning.
Unfortunately, others praised Zhao Xiulan instead of her. The more Li Lijuan thought about it, the more frustrated she became. Now, hearing Zhao Weiguo’s praise for Zhao Xiulan again, Li Lijuan felt even more uncomfortable.
Seeing Zhao Xiulan, who had sweated all day with beads of sweat on her forehead, Zhao Weiguo instructed her to rest well. The responsibility of preparing dinner naturally fell on Li Lijuan’s shoulders.
Feeling somewhat unwilling, Li Lijuan said, “Ah… I’ve already been busy making breakfast. Do I have to do dinner too? Shouldn’t Zhao Xiulan share some of the workload?”
With a stern face, Zhao Weiguo replied somewhat displeased, “Xiulan isn’t feeling well and still insisted on working today. She saved someone’s life today and earned ten extra work points. She should rest properly tonight. Lijuan, you haven’t done much work at home either. Are you still going to push the responsibility of making dinner onto Xiulan?”
