Quick Wear: Dote on Wife Like Life Chapter 19

Chapter 19: Phoenix Man × Wealthy Beauty 9

Life and death follow their own destiny—ultimately something that cannot be changed by human will. Although the patient’s surgery had been a great success, complications soon arose afterward, and in the end, he still passed away.

Lately, Bai Yue had been in low spirits. Gu Yin understood her feelings and would always hold her in his arms, comforting her softly.

“You all did your best. Everything was fated, wasn’t it? A doctor’s duty is to save lives and heal the wounded, but doctors aren’t gods. They can’t possibly save every life.”

Bai Yue nodded in his arms without saying a word. She had long understood these principles, but losing a patient who had every chance of being saved over such a minor matter was, in the end, deeply regrettable.

“You call this the best hospital? My dad died under your care! Compensate me! If you don’t, I’ll make sure you never have a peaceful day!”

Sure enough, the patient’s son came to cause a scene. People like him always shifted the blame for their own mistakes onto others. Gu Yin had seen many such cases.

As the director of the medical department, he went out to mediate immediately. “Mr. Chen, your father’s surgery was delayed because your family didn’t follow the pre-op instructions and gave him food he wasn’t allowed to eat. Although the surgery itself went smoothly, the post-op complications were beyond anyone’s control. We informed you about this risk in advance.”

“Don’t give me that useless crap! I’m just a rough man—I don’t understand any of that. All I know is that my dad died here.”

The man was agitated, shouting loudly with several burly men backing him up.

“In that case, Mr. Chen, you’re welcome to pursue this legally. We will cooperate fully.”

Clearly not someone who could be reasoned with, the man shouted, “I don’t have money for a lawyer or legal crap. If you don’t pay up, I’ll come here and raise hell every day. I’ll park my dad’s body right at your entrance and let’s see how you do business then!”

“Our hospital isn’t running a business. We’re trying to save critically ill patients. You can’t let your personal issues get in the way of others receiving care. If you continue like this, we’ll have no choice but to call the police,” the director said sternly from the side.

Hearing that they would call the police, the group visibly panicked. The patient’s son glanced around nervously and muttered a threat before slinking off.

That night, Bai Yue was on duty. Knowing the matter hadn’t been fully resolved, Gu Yin stayed with her in the duty room.

“What’s going on with you? Worried about me?” Bai Yue teased her boyfriend with a smile.

“That patient’s family clearly came looking for trouble. They won’t let this go easily.”

Gu Yin frowned—clearly, they still needed to stay on alert.

“It’s fine. Besides, we’ve got security guards. You’ve been on your feet all day. Go home and rest.”

“I’d rather stay here with you for now. I just can’t shake this feeling of unease.”

“Alright, alright—you clingy little devil!” Bai Yue grinned, deliberately teasing him as she looked at his overly vigilant expression.

Later that evening, Gu Yin asked Aunt Gu to deliver dinner to the hospital. Aunt Gu and the others had heard about the incident and were worried about Bai Yue. They asked Gu Yin to make sure both of them stayed safe.

Gu Yin agreed repeatedly, but just as he stepped out to pick up the food, the patient’s son crept toward Bai Yue’s duty room.

Seeing his fully covered-up appearance startled Bai Yue. Still, she cautiously asked, “Sir, can I help you?”

“It’s you?” The man took off his mask. He’d thought the department head would be on duty tonight, but unexpectedly, it was just a young doctor.

“Fine, it’s you. Write me a document saying your hospital’s poor medical skills killed my dad,” he demanded arrogantly.

“Mr. Chen, you know this had nothing to do with the hospital.” Bai Yue and the others had already explained this countless times.

“Nothing to do with you? How could it not? I spent so much money on medicine and treatment, and now you tell me it wasn’t your fault? What were you doing when you took my money?”

“All hospital charges follow national standards. We informed you of your father’s condition at every stage. Every decision—whether to medicate or proceed with treatment—was discussed with you. You agreed to everything.”

Bai Yue continued patiently, “We also told you in advance what foods were forbidden before surgery. We asked you multiple times, but you still gave your father those things. This isn’t our fault.”

Before she could finish, the man pulled a knife from his pocket.

Bai Yue instinctively stepped back in fright. “Please calm down. We understand you’re grieving the loss of your family member, but poor treatment results don’t automatically mean medical malpractice. We can provide full surgical documentation. If there is any fault, you’re entitled to compensation. But if not, please don’t cause trouble.”

“I am causing trouble. What are you gonna do about it? Do you know how much money my dad made? He had a retirement pension of over ten thousand yuan a month! If you hadn’t told me he could be cured, would I have spent all that money? Now you’ve killed him, and I’ve lost everything. Don’t talk to me about principles. Just give me money.”

“Even if you threaten me, you won’t get any money.” Bai Yue couldn’t understand his logic.

“I’ve already asked around. As long as you admit there was a surgical error, the hospital will have to pay. My dad’s gone. I can’t live without him. If you don’t give me money, I’ll make sure none of you get any peace.”

He was becoming hysterical. In fact, he had been financially dependent on his father and had recently accumulated gambling debts. If he couldn’t pay them off, the debt collectors wouldn’t let him go.

His loud shouting soon drew attention, and many doctors and nurses rushed in.

Seeing the growing crowd and realizing he couldn’t get out easily, the man—his mental state already unstable—suddenly pressed the knife to Bai Yue’s neck.

“Give me the money! All of you! Don’t push me! I’ve got nothing to live for anyway. Push me any further, and I’ll die with her!”

“Sir, please calm down.” A young nurse nearby saw the bloodshot look in his eyes and immediately knew things were bad. She gestured for others to call security.

Just then, Gu Yin returned with the food. From a distance, he saw a crowd around Bai Yue’s office. Alarmed, he dropped the food and rushed in.

“Sir, we can discuss compensation properly. Please put the knife down,” Gu Yin said, panting, pretending to be shocked while trying to calm him.

“Now you want to talk? Well, I’m done talking! I’m taking her with me to the grave! She’ll be my ghost bride!”

As he prepared to act, Gu Yin lunged at him, twisting the knife toward himself while yanking Bai Yue out of danger.

Gu Yin immediately realized from the man’s condition that he had taken drugs—his mind was clearly unstable.

Once Bai Yue was out, the security guards rushed in to help. But the man was strong and still armed, so no one dared make a rash move.

Although Gu Yin managed to redirect the knife, it now pointed at him, putting him at even greater risk. Seeing the escalating danger, he had no choice but to grab the blade with his bare hand.

As a result, Gu Yin’s hand was soon covered in blood.

With the threat neutralized, four or five security guards pinned the man to the floor and called the police.

“What happened? Why is there so much blood?” Bai Yue was shocked at the sight of Gu Yin’s bleeding hand. As doctors, they both understood how vital a surgeon’s hands were.

She rushed him to a treatment room. Gu Yin winced in pain. “It’s nothing, just a surface wound.”

“Don’t talk nonsense. If it’s nothing, why are you grimacing in pain?” Bai Yue’s hands trembled as she treated him, though her voice remained blunt.

Finally, another doctor couldn’t bear to watch anymore and stepped in. “Dr. Bai, you’re too emotional. Let me do it.”

Bai Yue nodded, stepping aside while gripping Gu Yin’s other hand tightly, as if she were the one hurt.

“Dr. Bai, don’t worry. Director Gu just has a superficial wound. A few stitches and he’ll be fine.”

Gu Yin wasn’t particularly concerned either. When he went for the knife, he had already mentally prepared for the injury. Though it hurt, he could endure it.

He comforted the clearly shaken Bai Yue. “Your hands are freezing—did I scare you? Don’t be afraid. I’m fine. With how strong I am, you think I’d lose to some drugged-up guy?”

“It was how recklessly you rushed in that scared me!” Bai Yue pouted.

“If I hadn’t rushed in, I’d have lost my wife!” The doctor stitching him up couldn’t take it anymore and left the room as soon as he finished—after all, the couple knew all the aftercare instructions themselves.

Knock knock knock…

“Dr. Bai, the police have some questions for you.”

“Alright, I’m coming.” Bai Yue turned to go, but Gu Yin grabbed her hand.

“I’ll go with you.”

“Dr. Bai, can you tell us when this person arrived and how he got in?”

“About half an hour ago. He seemed fairly normal at the time, just dressed a little strangely. But it’s a hospital—lots of people wear masks, so I didn’t think much of it.”

“Was this about a medical dispute or a personal grudge?”

“A medical dispute. Before the surgery…”

By the time they finished answering police questions, it was already very late. The two of them went straight home.
