Chapter 13: The Labor Force in the Sixties (Completed)
Lin Muqing took advantage of the time to study diligently with Gu Yu, who already had a solid foundation.
With the boost from the intelligence potion, her mind became clearer and her memory dramatically improved, making what they were learning not difficult at all.
Gu Yu was not unintelligent; he had both intelligence and physical strength.
By the time the exams for the seventh and eighth grades arrived, they both passed and gained admission to a prestigious school in North City.
The money the children earned from selling herbs on the black market was enough for them to buy a courtyard house where they could all live together.
Gu Yu resigned from his position as village chief, took care of all the details, and they took a train to North City.
Upon settling in North City, the eleven children each had their own responsibilities, from encouraging and supporting them to working in shops—from clothing stores to herb shops to restaurants.
The Gu family gradually established a foothold in North City.
Gu Yu started a trading company that handled several coastal transportation routes, becoming a shipping businessman.
By the 1990s, the children had grown up.
In their twenties, they each had promising careers, standing out in various fields.
Some started companies with assets worth billions, became forensic scientists, musicians, stars, artists, athletes, renowned professors at prestigious universities, or world-class boxers, excelling in many famous domains.
With the children contributing their monthly salaries, Lin Muqing managed to climb the ranks of the rich list.
She still lived lightly; Gu Yu traveled around, enjoying the scenery while learning self-defense techniques and practicing marksmanship.
When she had time, Lin Muqing also studied the subsidy system, occasionally selling items online.
This life was exceptionally fulfilling for Lin Muqing. She had wealth and power, was free from illness or pain, and had a husband who cared for her dearly, along with filial and understanding children.
She felt grateful to the system.
Because in this world, items purchased through the system could also be carried over to another world.
Her only choice was a divine item or a gun.
“One world complete.”
[Host, the next task is a new and relatively easy one; the second world is slightly more difficult.]
[Due to the host completing the task, the task reward is the physical attributes cultivated in the previous world, which will be added to the body in this new world. The original body of the main character was slender, and due to this possession, it has become beautiful and well-proportioned; the enhancements are based on the capabilities of her body in the previous world.]
“What about my body in the previous world?”
[When the host no longer takes on new tasks, the body acquired from the previous world can be chosen to be brought back.]
“Can I just preserve the body of the original character until then?”
[One world equals one period. If the host returns to the previous world, will they continue to take on new tasks?]
“Only one period? I think I should continue with the tasks.”
[The second world is—‘The captor of the emperor’s canary.’]
…
Inside a grand palace, the concubines dressed in court attire gathered together, their figures varying in shape. They smiled at each other, hiding daggers and feigning flattery.
“Little sister looks very lovely today.”
“Thank you. Last night, His Majesty…” The concubine chuckled softly, full of shyness.
“Seems like you have good fortune; it’s a blessing to be favored.”
The women, who were flattering and bowing, seemed to forget that they were kneeling in the center of the palace, right in front of a woman dressed in a light-colored palace gown.
Hanging her head, Lin Muqing caught sight of the black hairpin nestled in her dark hair.
After hearing what the women said, she snapped back to reality, only to realize she was kneeling on the ground, her knees hot and stinging as if they had been stepped on. Gradually, she raised her head.
Her stunning beauty brought forth a jealous envy among the concubines, shining like a phoenix among them, catching the cold smile of the noble lady sitting in the highest position.
“Lin Caijin, with such a captivating face, how could the Emperor have brought you back from Dongliao?”
The pain in her knees was sharp, and tears welled up in Lin Muqing’s eyes, making them glisten even more, which only served to make her all the more pitiable.
“System, please give me the memories.”
“[Do not compete for favor; the Emperor always brings many concubines back every time he goes out. You alone are just one of many! If you don’t know how to handle this, the favored concubine who drowned last night is yours!]” The noble lady, adorned like a flower, grimaced with a sharp warning.
“Since that’s the case, shouldn’t your highness not trouble me alone? There are many people who entered the palace with me,” Lin Muqing, having accepted the memories, knew how to respond and countered.
The noble lady was specifically trying to cause trouble because the original character was extremely beautiful; her captivating features clashed with the pure and innocent temperament she carried among the thousands of beauties in the palace.
If the noble lady did not pick on her.
“You dare to retort? Someone, come, clip her fingers! A mere minor concubine dares to challenge me, the noble lady?” Furious, the noble lady laughed eerily.
The palace attendants swarmed near the noble lady.
Lin Muqing could hear the concubines sitting around her suddenly hold their breath, as if their throats were being squeezed.
The hall suddenly fell silent.
A pair of steady, authoritative footsteps gradually approached.
The concubines who were originally seated abruptly stood up and bowed hastily.
“Your Majesty is here!”
The palace attendants quickly knelt down.
“Your Majesty is here!”
Lin Muqing was originally kneeling but slowly turned her head, seeing a pair of long military boots, a hunting bow tucked at the side, framed against the muscular legs of a man. Before she could lift her head, a long finger hooked her chin to raise her gaze.
“You have rushed to summon me; is it someone important? I must say, it’s quite amusing.”
The man, tall and imposing, had sword-like eyebrows and a heroic nose, along with sharp features and a deep expression that seemed devoid of any emotion.
