Chapter 36
A deep wolf howl echoed across the grassland, followed by other wolves raising their heads and howling in response. The sound continued for several minutes.
“The arrival of spring signals the breeding season for the wolf pack. They howl at the moon in agitation, and the full moon triggers their primal wildness, making them impulsive and irritable,” Song Xu explained in a serious, documentary-style voice as the howling neared its end.
Lying on the grass at a distance, a young wolf beastman in the pack that had just finished howling couldn’t help but shout, “It’s not like you said at all! Our howling has nothing to do with the moon.”
“Oh?” Song Xu responded, “Then what are you doing?”
The wolf angrily replied, “Of course, we’re greeting our pack members. And the moon doesn’t make us impulsive or irritable.”
Song Xu clapped her hands, “See, see, you’re getting agitated. You’re being irritable.”
The young wolf beastman was so annoyed that he let out a low growl.
Anyone who has owned a dog would recognize the sound of an angry dog.
Wang Wu, the young wolf beastman who spoke, was reminded by the head wolf to stay silent, though he continued to paw at the ground in frustration.
Seeing that the other side had gone quiet, Song Xu boredly leaned back on Wu Mu.
At this moment, Song Xu, Wu Mu, and the wolf pack were keeping a distance from each other. They had maintained this distance while walking through the wolf pack’s territory for a day. Apart from the initial confrontation, they hadn’t fought again. The wolves were wary of Wu Mu’s strength, and Song Xu held back the fierce snake.
The wolves had the advantage in numbers, and a real fight would result in mutual destruction. She didn’t want to see the snake get hurt, especially not over something like this.
Song Xu and Wu Mu wanted to move forward, clearly unwilling to detour immediately. The wolves followed them, prepared to watch them until they left the territory.
So it turned into this: Song Xu and Wu Mu walked in front, and the wolf pack followed behind. At night, when it was time to rest, Song Xu and Wu Mu found a place to lie down, and the wolf pack lay in a heap at a distance.
With a pack of wolves following, Song Xu couldn’t sleep. When she turned around, she could see dozens of green eyes staring at them from the grass, which was quite scary at night. Not only were their eyes glowing, but they also howled, dispelling any sleepiness Song Xu had managed to gather. This led to the earlier argument from a distance. They had already had several small arguments during the day, with Song Xu deliberately saying something loudly and the young wolves unable to hold back from responding.
In terms of strength, a little squirrel couldn’t beat any wolf, but in terms of verbal skills, even a pack of wolves couldn’t outtalk Song Xu. Before the pack members lost their minds from anger, the calm head wolf always intervened in time to prevent the situation from escalating. Song Xu also knew when to stop, allowing them to barely get along. The only benefit might be that, due to the threat of the wolf pack, the snake Wu Mu maintained his half-beastman form for a day and didn’t revert to his beast form.
During the day, the snake swam behind Song Xu, separating her from the wolves. Now, while resting, Song Xu lay on his tail, and he still kept his head raised, watching the wolves. From the wolves’ perspective, a big snake staring at them all night with glowing red eyes wasn’t a pleasant sight either. No wonder none of the wolves slept and instead sang in unison to boost their courage.
Song Xu thought, will they stare at each other all night?
She dozed off for a while and woke up to find Wu Mu still in the same position, motionless like a petrified snake. Looking at the other side, she saw a dozen wolf heads above the swaying grass, equally still.
“Ahem,” Song Xu cleared her throat, “Wu Mu, if you’re not going to sleep, how about I tell you a story?”
Wu Mu tilted his head slightly downward, looking at her momentarily before returning to the wolves. His expression seemed indifferent, but the tip of his tail had wrapped around her foot and patted it, indicating his agreement.
Song Xu said, “This story is called ‘Pleasant Goat and Big Wolf.’ It tells of a group of sheep beastmen living on the Green Grassland, along with a family of three wolf beastmen.”
The place was open, and the sound traveled far. The distant wolf beastmen couldn’t help but hear it. As they listened, one young wolf beastman couldn’t help but whisper to his companion, “This Big Wolf is too stupid. He can’t even catch a sheep. Catching sheep is so easy.”
“Yeah, if he catches them, why doesn’t he just eat them directly? Why does he have to light a fire, boil water, and cook them?”
“Maybe cooking them makes them taste better.”
“I’m starting to crave some sheep.” A wolf beastman, feeling hungry, licked his lips.
During the day, they had been following the dangerous half-beastman, watching the squirrel beastman nibble on flowers and grass until she was full. The snake didn’t need to eat every day, but they had only managed to catch a few rabbits in a hurry, and none of them were full.
Another wolf said, “I don’t like eating sheep. They taste weird and strong. I don’t like it.”
The companion who liked eating sheep was dissatisfied, “We all eat sheep. How can you say they taste weird? They’re delicious.”
Song Xu suddenly jumped up and supported, “Yeah, sheep are so delicious. Do you even know how to eat sheep?”
“Have you ever had cumin lamb, scallion lamb, or lamb kebabs?”
“No one in this world knows how to eat lamb better than I do.” Her words were so firm that all the wolf beastmen were stunned. The beastman, who both his companions and the enemy were criticizing, was even more confused.
Why? Why was a squirrel beastman so passionate about him not eating lamb?
After a long while, a wolf beastman asked, “So how should lamb be eaten?”
Song Xu’s expression changed, and she giggled, “I’m not telling you.”
The wolves were so angry that they howled, kicking up dust. The head wolf, Ling Feng, opened his mouth to remind them to stay alert, but he ended up eating a mouthful of dust and losing his composure. He yelled at his pack to quiet down and forbade them from talking to the squirrel anymore.
In the middle of the night, when they were the most tired, Song Xu dozed off for a while and woke up to see the wolf pack. A few pairs of green eyes seemed to squint, probably tired. The big snake was still staring at the wolf pack. Unlike Song Xu, who could nap under his protection, he wouldn’t relax with a threat nearby.
It was these stubborn wolves who were causing trouble. Song Xu thought about this, saw that Wu Mu wasn’t tired, poked his waist with her finger, and stood up, “Let’s keep moving.”
Wu Mu looked at the still dark sky in confusion and pushed Song Xu down, “It’s dark; sleep.”
“Sleep? If we don’t sleep, no one else will either,” Song Xu suddenly shouted, startling the wolf pack awake.
“Oh, we’re going to walk at night. Aren’t you following us? Don’t sleep, keep up,” Song Xu reminded.
The head wolf got up and followed, and the almost asleep wolves had to stand up, shake their ears, and follow.
Wu Mu’s tail swayed in the grass, avoiding any hidden dangers. In front of them was a meter-high clump of grass. Song Xu took a few steps back, ran, and jumped over it, landing without touching the grass.
“Nice, perfect,” Song Xu treated these clumps of grass as obstacles to jump over, feeling like she was participating in a hurdle race.
The bag with their belongings was hanging on the snake’s body, and Song Xu only carried a beast tooth dagger, feeling light and free. After jumping for a while, she got tired and returned to the snake.
“I feel like I’m missing something in my hand,” Song Xu suddenly said.
Wu Mu asked in confusion, “Missing what?” He couldn’t remember her holding anything.
Song Xu spread her palm, “This hand should be holding something.”
Wu Mu picked a flower nearby and placed it in her hand, “Hold, eat.”
Song Xu threw away the flower and grabbed his hand, “You’re so silly.”
Wu Mu looked down at their hands swaying in the middle. The little squirrel’s hand was warm and slightly damp, unlike his. Holding hands for a while even made his hand warm. But Song Xu didn’t like holding hands for long. She was soon distracted by the little bugs and flowers on the roadside and pulled her hand away to look. Wu Mu felt his hand quickly turn cold again. When Song Xu walked back to him, he took the initiative to hold her hand. Song Xu noticed and deliberately put her hand behind her back, not letting him hold it.
Hearing her giggle, Wu Mu knew she was doing it on purpose. The little squirrel was usually very nice, but sometimes she could be very annoying.
As the sun rose, Song Xu turned to look at the wolf pack, glancing once, then again. In a short time, she looked several times, causing Wu Mu to look back as well. Their frequent attention made the wolf pack alert and confused, their ears standing tall.
Finally, Song Xu, who had created the tense atmosphere, whistled at the wolf pack, “Hey, I saw the last beauty over there wrapping tails with the wolf next to her several times. Are you two dating?”
Even the wolf pack turned to look at their two companions.
Walking was boring, so when Song Xu saw them flirting, she wanted to start a conversation.
“Your partner isn’t as good-looking as you. His fur is a bit bald.”
Among the wolves, that wolf had the least and baldest fur. The female wolf beastman with thick fur didn’t speak, but the bald wolf couldn’t help defending himself, “I’m just shedding my winter coat. It’ll grow back soon. It’s normal for Mi Hua to like me. You’re the one who’s abnormal for being with a half-beastman.”
Song Xu retorted, “What’s wrong with a half-beastman? Is your tail longer than Wu Mu’s? Is your tail more flexible than his?”
When it came to tail length, wolves couldn’t compare to snakes. The wolf got anxious and blurted out, “But I have more fur than him.”
Song Xu replied, “Wu Mu has more hair on his head than you.”
The bald wolf was furious, “I’m a beastman. How can a half-beastman compare to me?”
Song Xu said, “Wu Mu is stronger than you. He can catch any prey.”
The bald wolf said, “A half-beastman can’t compare to a beastman in any way.”
Song Xu also angrily yelled, “Wu Mu has two XX, more than you. Can you beat that?”
T/N: Song Xu refers to the snake’s genitals 🙂
After shouting, Song Xu realized her mistake. She saw Wu Mu’s puzzled look and laughed awkwardly, “We won, haha.”
After a while, a beautiful female wolf’s voice came from the pack, “That’s too scary. She’s amazing.”
Song Xu, playing with her fingers, thought, Sis, please stop talking.
