Chapter 13: Joining the Army
Hearing this news, Grandma Lin exclaimed first, while Lin Su frowned. She subconsciously looked at Qin Sui, but saw no expression on his face.
Qin Sui was very calm. After calming down, he asked, “Who told you?”
Ni Niu: “Big Brother Qin.”
“He came to town?”
“Yes, we met him at the hospital entrance.”
It seemed he had been waiting there on purpose. Then there was no need to rush. When things got really urgent, his older brother wouldn’t act like this.
He didn’t tell himself but specifically told Ni Niu. Qin Sui didn’t bother to think about the intention behind it.
But no matter what, he still had to go back and take a look.
Before Qin Sui could speak, Grandma Lin said considerately, “I’ll look after things here. You should go back and see your mother.”
If she really died, Lin Su might be implicated later, and more unpleasant gossip would spread.
Qin Sui nodded and looked at Lin Su, “I’ll go back and take a look.”
Lin Su: “Mm, go back quickly.”
Qin Sui went back with Ni Niu and the three children.
Qinjia Village.
As soon as the car entered the village, someone notified the Qin family.
Learning that Qin Sui had indeed returned, Qin’s mother quickly gestured for Liu Yan to stop her.
Liu Yan was also perceptive and quickly reached out to stop her, and acted deeply, “Mother, Mother, you can’t do anything foolish! What will we do if you die!”
Liu Yan was strong, and Qin’s mother was pulled until she grimaced, but in order to act, she could only endure the pain.
When Qin Sui and the others finally entered the house, Qin’s mother’s hands holding the rope were stiff.
Seeing Qin Sui appear, Qin’s mother quickly put her neck in the noose. However, the expected obstruction didn’t appear. On the contrary, Qin Sui just watched her put the rope around her neck, without any intention of stopping her.
The act couldn’t go on.
Liu Yan was suddenly kicked hard by her mother-in-law. She immediately wanted to retaliate, but she held back, realizing something.
Looking up and exchanging glances with her mother-in-law, Liu Yan cleverly understood the meaning in her eyes.
“Qin Sui, quickly come and stop Mother!” Liu Yan shouted loudly, afraid that he wouldn’t hear.
“Oh, I don’t want to live anymore. Don’t stop me, let me die in peace.”
Qin’s mother pretended to kick the stool, and Liu Yan quickly hugged her legs.
Qin Sui covered Qin Keke’s eyes, and after thinking for a while, asked Ni Niu to take the three children out.
They shouldn’t see this scene.
Ni Niu did as he was told, but he couldn’t help but complain in his heart.
Deputy Commander Qin’s mother was really a troublemaker, and Deputy Commander Qin, his children, and his wife were really suffering from her.
Therefore, it’s unreliable to listen to one-sided words without a thorough understanding.
Seeing that Qin Sui still didn’t move, the “troublemaker,” Qin’s mother, was instantly filled with anger from the recent humiliation and ridicule. She violently removed the rope and jumped down, directly confronting Qin Sui.
“Qin Sui, no matter what, I’m your biological mother who gave birth to you and raised you. You actually watched me die?”
Qin Sui looked at her, “Then what do you want me to do, Mother?”
Qin’s mother quickly said, “You’re not allowed to register your marriage with Lin Su!”
So that’s what she was waiting for.
Qin Sui laughed angrily.
Seeing him laugh, Qin’s mother thought there was hope and quickly flattered, “Mother has found a good girl for you again. She’s the daughter of the factory director of the town’s shoe factory, and she now works at the supply and marketing cooperative.”
“Good family, good looks, and a job. Her butt is big, so she’s good at giving birth. Compared to Lin Su, which one isn’t better than Lin Su?”
Qin Sui was completely fed up and said directly, “The marriage report has already come out. Military marriages can’t be changed as you wish.”
“If you want me to become penniless, and my eldest brother’s family can’t use my influence anymore, then go ahead and make a fuss.”
After saying this, Qin Sui didn’t look at Qin’s mother again and turned to leave.
Qin’s mother’s face rarely showed a little confusion. She didn’t understand why her son had suddenly become so cold and ruthless.
It must be that bitch Lin Su who instigated him!
Thinking of this, Qin’s mother became even more resentful.
“Mother, I saw a lot of good things in Qin Sui’s car. They must be for us.”
Liu Yan had slipped out at some point. After seeing the good things in the car, she quickly ran back to tell her mother-in-law.
Qin’s mother’s anger subsided slightly, and her heart was temporarily comforted.
“He still has a conscience.”
Saying this, she went out to check, but the car was gone. After turning around in the house several times, she didn’t see the good things anywhere.
“Don’t look for them. They’re not for you. Aren’t you ashamed!”
At this time, Qin’s father walked over with his hands behind his back. Seeing Qin’s mother’s shameful appearance, his anger deepened, “Can’t you be quiet for a day? Are you forcing your second son to be estranged from you and never come home again?”
Qin’s mother ignored him and anxiously asked, “Where are the things? Who did he give them to?”
“Who cares who he gave them to. Don’t go out from today on.”
“Why not!”
“Because you only bring shame to us! You’re as stupid as a pig. You schemed against Lin Su without consulting me. It’s your fault that you were punished by kneeling and losing face!”
Before Qin’s mother could retort, Qin’s father concluded, “If you go out again to bring shame on us, you’ll go back to your mother’s house!”
Qin’s mother was already this age. If she were sent back to her mother’s house, that would be even more shameful.
Despite feeling heartbroken and angry, Qin’s mother could only comply because she knew how cold and ruthless her husband was and that he would do what he said.
…
To thank Lin Daqiang for helping Lin Su, Qin Sui bought malt extract, meat, cigarettes, and alcohol to give him.
Lin Daqiang’s family had originally resented Lin Daqiang’s grand gesture of going to Qinjia Village to help Lin Su. They thought it was a thankless task, but unexpectedly, Lin Su’s husband was capable.
Now, because of the many good things, Lin Daqiang’s wife even enthusiastically called Qin Sui “big nephew.”
She also praised Lin Su repeatedly. If she had a higher level of education and could think of other words, she might have praised her endlessly.
Qin Sui was short on time and only stayed at his house for a while before leaving.
Besides Lin Daqiang, the other villagers who had gone to Qinjia Village to help Lin Su get justice each received a package of white sugar.
Sugar was very precious.
This made the villagers who had gone with Lin Daqiang satisfied and praised Lin Su for finding a good husband.
Those who hadn’t gone because they were too lazy to bother immediately regretted it. If they had known that Lin Su’s husband was so generous, they should have gone too.
Now it was too late to regret.
After finishing this, Qin Sui and Ni Niu went home to pack Lin Su’s dowry and clothes, and went directly back to Linjia Village without telling their family.
Qin’s father and the others, seeing Qin Sui’s decisive actions, didn’t dare to have any objections. The family just watched from the side, without saying a word.
Qin’s mother wanted to make a fuss, but Qin’s father had locked her in the room beforehand.
If he didn’t control her, she would force Qin Sui to be estranged from them. Although the current situation was also bad, it couldn’t get any worse.
…
Because Qin Sui was anxious to return to the army, and because of Qin’s mother, a time bomb, they had to leave quickly, lest she make another fuss.
So, after Lin Su could walk, she quickly went with Qin Sui to register their marriage.
After registering, they returned to the village to pack their luggage.
There were too many things, so most of them had to be mailed. The remaining few were put in the car. Ni Niu drove back to the army, while Qin Sui and the others took the train back.
When mailing the luggage, they met Chen Zhaodi, who was also mailing things. Lin Su didn’t see her, but Qin Yao did. He quickly poked Qin Ni, who was indifferent.
With no choice, Qin Yao could only gesture for Lin Su to look and whispered, “That’s the aunt I mentioned before.”
Lin Su had heard Qin Yao mention Chen Zhaodi’s actions. Hearing this, she immediately looked over.
Chen Zhaodi naturally saw them too, but her momentum was not as strong as before. Now, seeing Qin Sui, she was like a mouse seeing a cat.
She didn’t even mail her things, quickly turning around and leaving, her pace quickening like she was running, her back particularly pathetic.
Lin Su raised her eyebrows and whispered to Qin Sui, “What did you do to her?”
Because of speaking, Lin Su leaned over, and a faint scent of snow cream wafted towards Qin Sui’s nose.
He uncomfortably rubbed his nose and slightly retreated, away from the fresh, elegant, and alluring fragrance.
Only when he couldn’t smell it anymore did Qin Sui answer in a low voice, “Her son works at a biscuit factory, and I’m friends with the director of the biscuit factory. I asked him to take care of her son.”
This “take care of” was not the same as that “take care of.” Lin Su understood immediately.
No wonder Chen Zhaodi didn’t dare to provoke Qin Sui anymore. As soon as she provoked him, she was targeted. If she provoked him again, her son’s job might not be safe.
In this era, having a job in town was an extremely glorious thing for farmers who worked in the fields.
Chen Zhaodi dared to harm her son like this. Her son would hate her.
Thinking of this, Lin Su looked at Qin Sui again.
This man knew how to strike at the vital point, and his actions were extremely decisive.
He chose to save her first without investigating clearly, upright and selfless. He was worthy of being promoted to deputy commander.
Lin Su liked his personality a little.
After mailing the things, the group went to town to eat before taking the car home.
Grandma Lin had already organized the remaining things.
If it weren’t for the fear that the car wouldn’t be able to hold it, she would have wanted to move everything from home.
Grandma Lin had lived in the village for decades. Suddenly having to go with her granddaughter to join the army, to be honest, she was reluctant.
But she was even more reluctant to let her granddaughter go.
Plus, her granddaughter’s health wasn’t good. Taking care of three children alone would definitely be exhausting. She could go and help.
“We have to leave before dawn tomorrow, so I have to make some pancakes to eat on the way.”
Grandma Lin had never taken a train. She heard that the food on the train was more expensive than outside, so she was used to saving money and didn’t want to waste it.
Lin Su went to help her.
Qin Ni and Qin Keke came to join the fun, mainly wanting to eat the hot pancakes first.
Qin Ni now allowed Lin Su to get close to her, and sometimes cooperated when Lin Su touched her head.
Qin Sui watched the lively scene in the kitchen from the yard. Seeing the two children circling around Lin Su and becoming intimate with her unconsciously, his tightly furrowed brows relaxed, and his cold eyes were replaced by tenderness.
Seeing Qin Yao standing there watching but not coming over, Qin Sui said, “If you want to go, go.”
Qin Yao curled his lips, “I’m not going.”
Qin Sui smiled helplessly.
The next day.
At four o’clock in the morning, Lin Su and the others got up, lit candles, and continued to pack their things.
Lin Su only told Third Uncle that she was going to join the army, but yesterday, a group of villagers came and brought some food for them to eat on the way.
Now they were stuffing these foods into the car.
The car was already full, and there was certainly no room for people to sit. Fortunately, Qin Sui had booked the old man’s bullock cart in advance.
After the things were packed, Ni Niu drove away first, and Lin Su and the others waited for the bullock cart to come.
Just as they were thinking about it, the bullock cart arrived.
It was still early before dawn, but they had to go to the train station early.
Time was pressing, and Grandma Lin didn’t even have time to feel sad about leaving before she hurriedly went with them to catch the train.
After a series of hectic processes, the six of them finally squeezed onto the train.
The trains in the 1980s were crowded. Luggage was everywhere, and there wasn’t even a place to put your feet.
Qin Sui had taken the train before, so in order to make Lin Su and the others more comfortable, he asked someone to buy a compartment sleeper. The family could just share one compartment.
They had just sat down and rested for a few minutes when Qin Sui, as a soldier, couldn’t bear to see the elderly, the weak, the sick, the disabled, and pregnant women having difficulties.
Seeing a pregnant woman painfully squeezed between luggage in the aisle, he went over and brought her in.
The pregnant woman and her husband were grateful and kept thanking Qin Sui.
Lin Su didn’t show it on her face, but she whispered privately, “Didn’t you say it’s a two-night journey? How will you sleep at night?”
Before Qin Sui could answer, Grandma Lin, who had heard this, looked up and glanced at Lin Su, “How else can you sleep? You two squeeze onto one bed. You’re married anyway.”
Hearing this, Lin Su was stunned.
Qin Sui’s eyelids twitched.
