Chapter 6: Returning to the Qin Family
Seeing her eyes closed tightly and her face pale and bloodless, Grandma Lin was both anxious and flustered. She quickly called out to a middle-aged woman walking towards them, “Mrs. Niu Er, come and help me!”
Mrs. Niu Er quickly ran over to help carry her.
Although they were in a hurry, Grandma Lin first settled the three children.
“Big Brother, you know the way home, right? If you don’t, ask someone. Remember to call your sisters and don’t let them run around. When you get home, feed your brother his medicine. I’ll take your mother to the clinic and be back soon.”
Then she hurried after them. Mrs. Niu Er was really fast.
Qin Yao looked at their backs and curled his lips.
She’s not my mother.
As he walked, Qin Yao continued to mutter.
Is the wicked stepmother’s body really that weak? Could it be a ploy?
“Do you think the wicked stepmother is using a ploy?” Qin Yao asked Qin Ni as he quickened his pace.
The latter followed closely behind, and hearing this, she looked up at him blankly, “What meat? Are we having meat for breakfast?”
Qin Yao: “…”
A carefree foodie.
…
Lin Su woke up under Xiao Wu’s care. As soon as she opened her eyes, she asked, “How’s Keke?”
Grandma Lin patted her arm angrily, “Alright, take care of yourself first.”
Lin Su’s nasal voice was heavy; she must have caught a cold.
Xiao Wu prescribed some medicine for her.
The family also had Lin Su’s usual Chinese medicine. Grandma Lin thought that she would use the Chinese herbs and chicken to make a stew for Su Su later to replenish her body.
After Lin Su recovered, she didn’t look as scary as before, and Grandma Lin’s hanging heart finally settled.
The two of them didn’t stay long and went home.
When they arrived home, they saw Qin Yao sweeping the floor, and Grandma Lin’s expression improved.
Although they weren’t to blame for today’s incident, it was caused by them. Su Su’s body was already weak. If something really happened, it would cost her old life.
Seeing Qin Yao being so considerate now, Grandma Lin’s slight resentment disappeared.
“Is Keke better?” Lin Su asked with concern.
Qin Yao glanced at her, said nothing, and just nodded.
Lin Su was still worried and went to check on him. She touched Keke’s forehead; it wasn’t hot anymore.
It seemed that children had good resistance.
Seeing that Qin Keke was still sleeping, Lin Su covered him with a blanket and was about to leave when she saw Qin Yao standing at the door, staring at her with wary eyes.
Like he was guarding against a wolf.
Lin Su sighed helplessly, “You don’t have to be so wary of me. Keke’s cold wasn’t caused by me, and I have no reason to harm him. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to explain it to your father, would I?”
Qin Yao didn’t speak.
Lin Su didn’t mind. As she got up and passed by Qin Yao, she touched his head, unsurprisingly receiving a bristling little wolf cub.
After teasing the little boy, Lin Su’s mood improved. Her body was really uncomfortable, so she went to lie down and rest.
When she was vaguely awakened by Grandma Lin, she was still a little dazed.
“Dinner is ready.” Grandma Lin touched her forehead, “It’s still a little hot. Did you take your medicine?”
“I did.”
“Okay, get up and eat.”
“Okay.”
Lin Su washed her face. When she came out, the three children were already sitting at the dinner table.
Qin Keke was in good spirits and was now drinking porridge with a spoon.
Qin Yao helped Grandma Lin distribute chopsticks, and Qin Ni stared blankly at the stewed chicken in the middle.
After Lin Su sat down, Grandma Lin first gave her a chicken leg, and the other chicken leg was divided among the three of them.
Lin Su quickly divided most of the chicken leg meat in her bowl to Grandma, protecting her bowl, “If Grandma doesn’t eat, I won’t eat either.”
Grandma Lin smiled helplessly.
The three children ate the meat silently, with Qin Ni eating the most deliciously.
She seemed to enjoy everything she ate.
Lin Su didn’t have much of an appetite, but seeing her eat so deliciously, she added half a bowl of rice.
“When are we going home?” Qin Yao suddenly asked while eating.
Lin Su paused, “Do you miss your grandmother?”
Qin Yao was choked and immediately lowered his head to eat, no longer speaking.
Lin Su looked at the other two children, “Do you want to go home too?”
Going back to that home meant being ordered around, not eating enough, and sometimes being beaten and scolded. Here, not only did they not have to do chores, but they also ate their fill and weren’t beaten or scolded. Even a fool would know which to choose.
Qin Ni focused on eating and didn’t answer her. Qin Keke cautiously glanced at Lin Su, then turned to look at Qin Yao, who didn’t give any hints.
With no choice, he could only say, “No.”
Lin Su was satisfied and smiled, serving them dishes.
After dinner, Qin Yao rushed to wash the dishes, and Grandma Lin didn’t stop him.
“Grandma, let him wash. This child is stubborn. He probably doesn’t want to eat for free,” Lin Su advised.
Grandma Lin sighed, “I think his temper is very stubborn. How will you get along with him in the future?”
“Things take time.” Lin Su was very open-minded.
She wasn’t in a hurry, but Grandma Lin was very anxious.
Qin Ni still didn’t talk to them. Although this little girl didn’t show it, her wariness towards them was only increasing.
She wouldn’t let anyone touch her braids, which were still crooked. She wouldn’t answer questions, and most of the time, she treated them as if they didn’t exist, immersed in her own world, not knowing what she was thinking.
Looking at Qin Keke playing with stones, he was small but not easy to fool. Today, Su Su caught a cold because of him, but he still wasn’t close to Su Su.
Knowing that they disliked Su Su because of her stepmother status, but she didn’t expect them to dislike her so much.
Sigh, as Su Su said, things take time.
…
By evening, Qin Keke was much better.
After drinking a few drops of the spiritual spring water that she had finally produced, the tightness in Lin Su’s chest eased, and she thought about taking them back tomorrow.
Because of Qin Keke’s cold, Lin Su was afraid he would infect Qin Yao and Qin Ni, so she discussed with Qin Yao to let Qin Keke sleep with her.
Qin Yao didn’t speak, just holding Qin Keke and looking at the corner.
Lin Su thought he was still not at ease with her, and just as she was feeling disappointed, she saw Qin Keke being pushed over.
Lin Su’s eyes lit up, and she quickly hugged Qin Keke and took him out.
Qin Keke wasn’t used to Lin Su and was very stiff when Lin Su held him. Facing the prospect of sleeping with her, his mouth quivered, and he was about to cry.
Lin Su was prepared and quickly took out a paper airplane and put it in his hand, “Do you like this?”
Qin Keke stopped crying and curiously looked at the paper airplane in his hand.
Then, Lin Su took out a paper boat and a Black Cat Sheriff drawing made with charcoal.
“If you don’t cry, I’ll tell you the story of Black Cat Sheriff. How about that?”
Qin Keke didn’t know what Black Cat Sheriff was, but he liked the look of Black Cat Sheriff.
Perhaps because he was young, Qin Keke’s appearance was rather soft, and he didn’t look much like a boy from the outside. At this moment, he looked at Lin Su with cute, starry eyes, almost melting her heart.
“Then lie down, I’ll tell you the story of Black Cat Sheriff.”
The story worked well. Qin Keke held the paper airplane and paper boat tightly, lay down obediently, and patted the side, signaling Lin Su to lie down quickly.
Lin Su lay down with a smile, covered him with a blanket, and slowly told him the story of Black Cat Sheriff.
Qin Keke didn’t have the concept of a mother. By the time he was old enough to understand, his mother was already dead, so he didn’t yearn for a mother.
But at this moment, nestled in Lin Su’s arms, listening to her gently tell him amazing stories, he suddenly missed his mother.
His clothes were suddenly grabbed tightly. Lin Su’s voice paused slightly, then softened, her hand gently patting Qin Keke’s back, giving him a sense of security.
Lin Su and the others had been out for two days, but the Qin family hadn’t come looking for them, showing that they didn’t care about them at all.
When they rushed back to the Qin family, the Qin family was having dinner.
As soon as they appeared, the Qin family was on high alert. Qin’s mother subconsciously picked up the meat on the table and hid it, while Qin’s eldest brother’s children were afraid that Lin Su would again divide the dishes with Qin Yao and the others, so they quickly sped up their eating.
Lin Su raised her eyebrows, “If you didn’t know better, you’d think bandits had come.”
This behavior was indeed a bit excessive. Qin’s father glared at Qin’s mother, signaling her to take out the meat.
Qin’s mother refused, “This is what we bought with our own money. Why should we give it to those three debt collectors?”
Qin’s father was completely fed up with this fool. This kind of thing could be said privately, but why say it in front of his second daughter-in-law? If she went to complain, their relationship with his second son would definitely become even more strained.
Lin Su smiled, “Mother, you’re wrong. Your money is all given by Qin Sui. Since it’s given by Qin Sui, why are we taking advantage?”
“Also, Mother, you don’t treat us as a family. Do you want to split up?”
“Okay, I’ll send a telegram to Qin Sui and ask him to come back quickly.”
“Don’t bother him, Qin Sui is very busy,” Qin’s father saw that things were going wrong and quickly spoke, “Your mother is just confused. Don’t bother with her.”
Then Qin’s father glared fiercely at Qin’s mother, “What are you saying about taking advantage as a family? You can’t even shut your mouth when you have food? Quickly take out the meat!”
Seeing the head of the family getting angry, Qin’s mother immediately gave up, reluctantly taking out the meat.
They dared to take it, but Lin Su didn’t dare to eat it, “Forget it, as juniors, how can we snatch meat from our elders?”
Good for you! Qin’s mother glared at Lin Su.
But Lin Su changed the subject, “However, Qin Yao and I are too weak and need to replenish our bodies. Let’s just eat a few eggs.”
Just a few eggs? Don’t you dare to be so brazen!
Seeing that Qin’s father and Qin’s mother didn’t react, Lin Su looked at Qin’s father, “Father, are there no eggs at home?”
There were eggs, but not for them.
In these times, eggs were as precious as meat. If they ate them, what would his grandsons eat?
Qin’s father wanted to say no, but Lin Su didn’t play by the rules. She went straight to the kitchen to check.
