Chapter 14 : Simply Love Making Money
The car slowly started, and the interior was silent. Lin Ran stubbornly held back her tears, her head lowered as she shrank into her coat.
Although it was raining, the road conditions were decent, and soon, the car came to a stop.
Fu Xingjian, sitting in the driver’s seat, unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the car door, and held an umbrella to open the rear door for her.
Lin Ran held onto Liang Meiqi’s clothes and bag with her left hand, while her right hand carried her own bag and laptop, looking like a clothes rack, moving slowly and clumsily under the drizzling rain.
Fu Xingjian couldn’t stand it and reached out to her, “Give me your bag and laptop.”
Lin Ran stubbornly refused, “I’ll carry it myself.”
Then she added, “Mr. Fu, thank you for the ride. I’m going now,” and turned to walk away into the rain.
Fu Xingjian exhaled heavily, his long legs quickly following her. The large black umbrella once again covered them both.
“Mr. Fu, it’s fine, it’s not far, I can walk back,” Lin Ran said.
Fu Xingjian was so angry that his chest rose and fell. “Do you have to talk to me like that?”
Lin Ran stopped and looked up at him, her voice cold. “What else should I say? Right now, you’re my lofty, high-and-mighty client, and I’m just an ordinary person struggling for a few scraps of silver!”
“Alright, you’ve really learned to talk since we last met!” Fu Xingjian said with exasperation.
“Mr. Fu, it’s been five years. Even the slowest learner can get smart!” Lin Ran retorted.
Fu Xingjian was livid. He shoved the umbrella into her hands and turned to leave. Lin Ran didn’t want to take it, but she hurriedly tried to give it back. However, with her shorter legs, after only a few steps, she saw the car drive away.
She grasped the umbrella handle and stared at the car that had long disappeared, feeling a wave of helplessness.
By the time she reached the second floor of the bungalow, she opened the umbrella on the balcony to dry it and then put away her clothes before beginning to freshen up.
The warm water flowed over her, and Lin Ran suddenly realized that Fu Xingjian had parked the car in front of her bungalow this time.
She had clearly told him last time that she lived in Jinxiuyuan…
The lie was exposed, and the delayed embarrassment kept her up until 3 a.m. before she finally fell asleep.
The next day, Lin Ran walked into the office rubbing her tired eyes.
“Lin Ran, did you have trouble sleeping?” Liang Meiqi asked, handing her a cup of coffee and thanking her for helping with the coat and bag last night.
“Yeah, a bit anxious,” Lin Ran replied casually, fabricating a lie.
Liang Meiqi put away the bag and coat before sitting beside her.
“Lin Ran, I heard Mr. Fu gave you a ride home last night?”
Lin Ran was opening her laptop, typing in her password, and responded with a vague “Hmm,” not wanting to mention last night again or hear Fu Xingjian’s name.
Liang Meiqi, lost in her own thoughts, asked, “I also heard you two were college classmates?”
Only then did Lin Ran raise her eyes and look at her, saying, “Zhang Gong’s work may not be great, but his mouth sure is fast.”
Liang Meiqi blushed, her eyes blinking as she stared at Lin Ran.
“Yes, we were college classmates, but we weren’t close. Anyway, you can tell, he doesn’t treat me any differently.”
Liang Meiqi’s brows relaxed, and her beautiful face broke into a bright smile. “Well, that’s true. Mr. Fu’s cold face is the same with everyone.”
Lin Ran stood up to get a glass of water. “So, you’re not giving up, huh?”
Liang Meiqi smiled sheepishly before snapping her fingers. “I thought about it all night last night. Pursuing a man like Mr. Fu, who is so popular, is definitely tough, but it’s fine. As long as I put in the effort, I’ll definitely get results.”
Effort will bring rewards?
Did she not know that times have changed? The more you try, the more deliberate you become, and the more deliberate, the worse it gets.
But she and Liang Meiqi were just colleagues. There was no need to burst her bubble, or else she’d be accused of sour grapes.
She’d said all that needed to be said, and offered her advice. If others were determined to hit a wall, it was their choice. She didn’t have to get involved.
“Alright, good luck.”
“Hehe, Lin Ran, can you help me?”
“No. I’m busy making money.”
“Okay. Lin Ran, are you really short on money?”
Liang Meiqi thought she seemed very frugal, though everything she wore didn’t cost more than 200 yuan.
“Yes, I’m really short on money. Starting this weekend, I’m working a part-time job.”
Liang Meiqi was surprised. “You’re really working weekends? That’s so intense. Are you planning to buy a house by yourself? That’s too tiring. Why not just marry a local guy who already owns a house?”
Lin Ran chuckled and shook her head. “I’m not buying a house. I just simply love making money.”
Relying on others is unreliable. Lin Ran had understood this truth since she was seven years old.
