Reaching for the Capital’s Branches Chapter 10

Chapter 10: Divorce Agreement

This relationship should have ended long ago.

The car fell into sudden silence, so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

The vehicle soon arrived at Fragrant Mountain Villa.

The moment they stepped into the elevator, Tao Wanxing’s waist was abruptly seized as Meng Chu pulled her forcefully into his embrace.

“Does that Zhao Qingyuan like you? Hmm?” His tone was hard to decipher—whether angry or mocking.

“Does he know you were the one who initiated that one-night stand with me?”

“Does he even know you’re married?”

A chilling aura surrounded her, laced with the scent of minty tobacco.

Tao Wanxing struggled to breathe, trying to push him away, but how could she break free from Meng Chu’s iron-like grip?

She turned her head aside, nearly sobbing. “I didn’t—I don’t know.”

Meng Chu gritted his teeth, danger flashing in his eyes.

Men understood men best. The moment he saw Zhao Qingyuan today, he knew the man had improper thoughts about his woman.

Open-hearted to outsiders, yet resistant to him in every way.

He cradled the back of Tao Wanxing’s head and leaned in.

“No—”

Tao Wanxing flushed with embarrassment and frustration—they were in an elevator!

Just then, the elevator doors dinged open.

Meng Chu swept her up into his arms, still glaring down at her lips with a predatory hunger, like a starving wolf.

Fierce, domineering, claiming everything.

Once inside the apartment, Tao Wanxing’s back slammed against the door with a sharp “thud.”

She paled from the pain.

A darker, colder fury surfaced on the man’s face.

“Tao Wanxing, don’t even think about it!”

“You provoked me, and now you want to run?”

“Without my permission, you won’t utter a single word!”

Had he heard?

Heard her mention divorce.

Only now did Tao Wanxing realize the intensity of Meng Chu’s rage. He had been holding it back since the car, the fire growing fiercer, scorching them both until this moment.

She could only endure his fury passively.

Her shoulder-length hair was a disheveled mess.

Meng Chu gently smoothed her sweat-dampened strands, noticing the tears welling in her eyes, her dark lashes trembling.

Her wet, frightened gaze resembled that of a startled kitten.

Terrified he might do something worse, yet pitifully alluring in her innocence.

He kissed her softly, as if handling something precious.

The more she shrank back, the more relentless he became.

After a long moment, he suddenly chuckled, his voice uncharacteristically tender.

“Alright, I’ll stop teasing you.”

Held in Meng Chu’s arms, Tao Wanxing shivered as a cold breeze raised goosebumps across her fair skin.

He carried her to the bathroom, washed her, then wrapped her in a towel and tucked her into bed. Only after covering her did he change clothes and leave.

The click of the lock echoed outside the door. Tao Wanxing pulled the blanket over herself, tears slipping from the corners of her eyes.

He must be going to see Zhu Yan again.

Her stomach growled, but she had no desire to move.

Silently, she cursed Meng Chu in her heart—utter scum.

Half-asleep, she heard knocking.

She wanted to ignore it, but the raps grew more urgent. Annoying!

Reluctantly, she got up, slipped into her nightgown, and checked the video doorbell. A delivery person stood outside.

Pressing her lips together, she asked, “What is it?”

“Delivery for a Mr. Gao.”

Tao Wanxing froze. Mr. Gao? The only one who knew about Meng Chu’s private residence was Gao Ming!

Which meant Meng Chu had ordered this.

She lowered her gaze, bitterness welling in her chest.

He was with Zhu Yan, yet still remembered to order takeout for her. Should she be grateful?

She called out, “Just leave it there, I’ll come get it later.”

Only after the delivery person left did she open the door to bring the food inside.

When she opened the box, she froze.

It was her favorite dessert from that shop she loved.

How did he know?

Tao Wanxing took out her phone to ask him, but a notification from New Yunzhou Online suddenly popped up on her screen.

Seeing Zhu Yan’s name on the cover, she clicked on it almost against her will.

The accompanying photo showed Zhu Yan standing at the entrance of that dessert shop, smiling charmingly while holding an identical box of sweets.

In the background of the photo was a faceless figure with their back turned.

Tao Wanxing recognized Meng Chu instantly.

Suppressing the sour ache in her chest, she felt hollow inside.

She’d been overthinking things. How would he know her preferences?

The dessert on the table now tasted bland. After forcing down a few bites, she lay on the sofa and fell asleep.

3 AM.

When Meng Chu returned, he frowned at the sight of Tao Wanxing curled up on the sofa with only a thin blanket covering her.

After checking her forehead to confirm she wasn’t feverish, he carefully carried her to the master bedroom. Holding her waist, her natural fragrance reached his nose.

Meng Chu inhaled deeply before lightly kissing Tao Wanxing’s soft, warm lips.

Thinking of the message Gu An had sent him, his eyes darkened.

The 7 AM alarm rang punctually.

Tao Wanxing was surprised to find herself in bed, realizing Meng Chu must have returned during the night.

She got up, determined to clarify the nature of their relationship.

But there was no trace of Meng Chu in the room.

She exhaled in relief, though her chest still felt tight. She must have been sleepwalking—she didn’t even remember getting into bed.

Her work group chat buzzed incessantly.

Opening it, she saw the final notice about the advanced training program at Jingzhou’s top hospital.

The head nurse had privately discussed this opportunity with her days earlier.

Steeling herself, and considering her current situation with Meng Chu, she submitted the application.

Approval came swiftly. By 3 PM, the head nurse messaged her.

But the final line made her heart skip:

“Does your second brother approve of you going for training?”

By now, the entire emergency department knew the Governor of Cloud Province was her brother-in-law.

After replying, she began packing. There wasn’t much to prepare—many belongings remained unpacked from her last move.

From the bottom of her suitcase, she retrieved the divorce papers she’d prepared long ago. Placing them on the table, she closed the door behind her.
