Chapter 16: This Mother is a Little Scary
The train was slightly delayed, and it was already two in the morning when they arrived in Beijing.
Su Jinyan, with her bag slung over her shoulder, holding her daughter and pulling Zhao Qi, got off the train and waited on the platform for Zhao Yuan, keeping an eye on the luggage.
The biting cold wind howled, and the ground was covered with an inch of snow. The two children shivered from the cold.
“Yan Yan?”
Suddenly, an uncertain voice drifted into her ears with the wind.
Su Jinyan turned her head in confusion and saw two men standing in the cold wind.
The two men were wearing military overcoats, military caps, and black scarves. Even though they were bundled up tightly, she could see they were freezing and barely holding on.
“Dad?”
Su Jinyan wasn’t sure, but she still walked towards the men.
“Is it Dad? It’s Yan Yan.”
The man’s heart ached seeing his daughter holding one child and pulling another.
He hurried forward, took the child in Su Jinyan’s arms into his own, and then looked around anxiously. “Where’s the children’s father? Didn’t he come together?”
Su Jinyan nodded. “Yes, the children’s grandfather’s legs are not well, and there are two bags of luggage. He went to help.”
Su Chengguo nodded and said to the person behind him, “Xiao Li, take the luggage to the car first.”
“You go to the car with Xiao Li first. Dad will wait here.”
Su Jinyan paused and glanced towards the sleeper car. She happened to see Zhao Yuan supporting Zhao Zhenjun walking towards them.
In the distance, Zhao Yuan also saw Su Jinyan.
However, when the family of three saw the man beside Su Jinyan, their steps instantly froze.
Especially Zhao Zhenjun and Sun Shi, seeing him in person made them feel utterly ashamed.
They had held their son back.
However, it was only for a moment. Zhao Yuan supported Zhao Zhenjun’s arm and said in a low voice, “Let’s go, Dad.”
The father and son walked ahead, with Sun Shi following closely behind. The three of them felt that the short walk was more difficult than walking the Long March.
The three stopped. Zhao Yuan nodded towards Su Chengguo, unsure of how to address him, so he simply said, “Hello.”
Call him Dad? What if he didn’t acknowledge him as his son-in-law? That would be embarrassing himself.
Call him Uncle? He and Su Jinyan were legally married, husband and wife, so calling him Uncle was clearly inappropriate.
Zhao Zhenjun and Sun Shi lowered their heads in even more self-abasement, not knowing what to say.
Zhao Yuan narrowed his eyes against the wind and looked at Su Chengguo, who was bundled up tightly, revealing only his eyes.
Su Chengguo exuded coldness, his eyes looking at him faintly, colder than the winter wind in the twelfth lunar month.
Almost instantly, he felt Su Chengguo’s displeasure, but Zhao Yuan didn’t flinch and returned his gaze.
Looking at the rustic and physically impaired in-laws, Su Chengguo felt a heavy weight in his chest.
Even seeing the handsome Zhao Yuan, he still couldn’t be happy. What use was good looks?
After a long while, after their silent confrontation, he finally let out a soft breath. “It’s cold, let’s get in the car quickly.”
This son-in-law was not someone to be trifled with!
Zhao Yuan pursed his lips, bent down to pick up the shivering Zhao Qi, and supported Zhao Zhenjun. The group silently left the platform and got into the car.
Now, being with Su Jinyan seemed to be beyond his control.
Since he had come to Beijing, he would make a career for himself, be worthy of Su Jinyan, and wouldn’t let anyone look down on his Yan Yan.
Considering there were many people, Su Chengguo had brought two cars. He directly arranged for Zhao Yuan and the Zhao couple to sit in one car.
Su Jinyan held her daughter and sat in the other car with Su Chengguo.
“Dad, did you wait for a long time?”
Su Chengguo was in a bad mood at the moment, but when his daughter asked, he still tried to answer gently, “Hmm, but the train was delayed, and the train station announced it. We waited in the car.”
“Oh, is Mom home today?”
In the original owner’s eyes, Su’s mother was a very strict mother. She had been afraid of Su’s mother since she was a child.
People who did scientific research not only spent less time with their children but also demanded strict adherence to rules in everything and spoke seriously, which was why the original owner was afraid of Su’s mother.
But having read the book, she knew that Su’s mother had a cold exterior but a soft heart and also very much wanted the children’s affection.
“Yes, your mother is in Beijing recently. Hearing that you were coming back, she took a week’s leave.”
After Su Chengguo finished speaking, he pondered for a moment before finally asking the question that had kept him awake for days and nights, “Yan Yan, the child is so old. Did you get married as soon as you went to the countryside? Why?”
Why was she in such a hurry to find a rural man?
Why, despite their repeated warnings not to marry in the countryside, did she get married so quickly?
They had considered that their daughter might have been forced, but they quickly dismissed that idea.
In their hearts, Su Jinyan was not the kind of person who could be forced.
A long silence filled the car, even the air seemed to weigh down.
Looking at the silent Su Jinyan, so delicate and small, he really couldn’t bear to hit or scold her. If it were his son, he would have already used the stick.
Su Chengguo exuded coldness, and Xiao Li, who was driving in front, became even more careful, fearing to involve innocent people.
Not only in their car but also in the car behind them.
With the driver present, the family of three didn’t dare to say anything. All the way, Sun Shi held Zhao Zhenjun’s arm tightly, looking at the luxurious car, actually two of them, and became even more certain that Su Jinyan’s father was a high-ranking official. At the same time, she was even more worried that the Su family wouldn’t let Su Jinyan marry their son and would force them to separate. If her son and daughter-in-law were separated, how would they try to keep them together?
Sun Shi thought that she would be so scared that she wouldn’t dare to say a word.
The car quickly returned to the Su family’s home.
The Su family’s house was in a compound, but not in a military compound, but in the family compound of Su’s mother’s military industrial research unit, which had stronger security. In the middle of the night, as their car drove in, they saw three small teams of patrolling personnel and were stopped for inspection.
The fact that their family could be assigned a two-story small building with a small courtyard in the back showed that Su’s mother’s rank in her unit was not low, and her contributions were significant.
Getting out of the car, Su Jinyan noticed that they were the only car, but she was smart enough not to provoke her father and didn’t ask.
Anyway, it wouldn’t get lost.
The living room light was on. As soon as Su Jinyan followed Su Chengguo into the house, she saw Su’s mother, Xin Huimin, sitting in the living room reading documents.
Perhaps it was the original body’s instinctive reaction, but she suddenly flinched. While feeling surprised, she raised her eyes and openly sized up Xin Huimin.
Her small, black-dotted milky white pajamas couldn’t hide her serious demeanor.
At this moment, Xin Huimin also looked up at them.
She directly bypassed Su Chengguo and looked at Su Jinyan behind him, holding the child. Almost simultaneously, her eyebrows slightly furrowed.
“Come and sit down. What is it? After not coming back for a few years, is this home unfamiliar to you?”
Thinking of the monthly remittances and mailed coupons Xin Huimin had sent her, she grinned, her voice clear and carrying a hint of flattery and sweetness. “Mom~”
After calling out, she looked down and saw brand-new pink slippers by the shoe cabinet. Without hesitation, she took off her shoes and changed into the slippers.
The child had already fallen asleep in the car. After Su Jinyan changed her shoes, she was about to put the child on the sofa when Su Chengguo said, “Give me the child. You sit down and have a drink of water.”
Su Chengguo carried the child upstairs. As soon as Su Jinyan sat down, the family’s Aunt Liu brought her a cup of brown sugar water.
“Miss, have some water.”
Su Jinyan raised her eyes and stared at the nanny. After a moment, she looked down at her belly and smiled slightly. “Aunt Liu, you should go and rest.”
This was the nanny who would cause Su Chengguo to take the blame and shatter this family.
On the surface, she looked simple and honest, but who would have thought she was treacherous and vicious?
Aunt Liu felt a shiver from Su Jinyan’s gaze, unsure of what Su Jinyan meant. She glanced at the cold-faced Xin Huimin and nodded. “There are dumplings warming in the pot in the kitchen. Miss, remember to eat some later.” After saying that, she returned to her bedroom.
As soon as Aunt Liu’s bedroom door closed, Xin Huimin raised her eyes and looked at her faintly. “Speak.”
Speak?
Su Jinyan raised her hand and rubbed her nose. This woman put a lot of pressure on her.
No wonder the original owner was afraid from the bottom of her heart.
She glanced at Xin Huimin, then her dark eyes curved into a smile, and she said cautiously, “Mom, what should I say? How about you ask, and I answer?”
