Rebirth in the ’70s: A Farming Side Story – Chapter 19

Chapter 19

Liu Yu was watching with wide eyes, utterly amazed. It was more eye-opening than watching Animal Planet!

Liu Jianjia was kneeling, looking extremely uncomfortable: “Mother, I’m the team leader of the production team. I need to be fair, how can I do this?”

Chen Shi shot him a sideways glance: “For your younger brother, for our family, what’s wrong with this?”

Chen Shi was persistently pressuring her eldest son, relying on her identity as his mother. She had done this before, and each time Liu Jianjia had no choice but to surrender, then end up carrying the workload for Liu Laosan and his wife.

But now, Liu Yu wouldn’t allow such things to happen!

“Yes, yes, yes! My grandmother is really smart! We can make a little fake accounting in the production team! By getting more food, cloth tickets, and oil tickets, our family will be much better off!”

Liu Yu smiled sweetly, her chubby face almost looking silly.

Chen Shi nodded in satisfaction, even more dismissive of her son: “Oldest son, look at you! You’re not even as open-minded as your daughter! If you’re the team leader, shouldn’t you use it to help the family?”

Liu Yu’s smile slowly turned cold: “Grandmother, are you doing this for the Liu family, or for Uncle? Don’t even think about having my dad give him more work points!”

Chen Shi became furious: “You little brat, are you trying to rebel?!”

Both Nie Xiaocui and Liu Ye agreed with Liu Yu’s point. Liu Ye immediately stood up to support her sister: “Grandmother, my sister is just speaking the truth!”

Chen Shi saw that the people from the main house were all opposing her. As the head of the family, she was used to having her way and controlling all the family resources. Today, however, the main house dared to disrespect her, which was unacceptable.

She had to come up with a way to put them in their place, or life would be unbearable.

Chen Shi rolled her eyes and collapsed onto the ground: “Oh! I’ve worked so hard for the Liu family my whole life! I’ve raised three sons, one by one, taking care of them! And now, today, the whole main house is teaming up to bully this old woman! Oh, how heartless! How can I live like this? How can I go on? I should just find a rope and hang myself so that you all can have some peace. I won’t live anymore!”

The couple from the third house were more than willing to follow suit. Liu Li knelt beside her mother-in-law, sobbing and wailing, looking utterly devastated.

Liu Jianjia stoked the fire from the side: “Mother! Mother! You’ve worked so hard raising us, the third son! We haven’t even done enough to honor you, and now you’re thinking of ending your life?”

He changed tactics, his eyes turning vicious as he glared at his eldest brother: “It’s all your fault! If you had listened to mother, nothing would have happened! If mother dies, I’ll fight you to the death!”

Liu Jianjia was criticized by his younger brother and opened his mouth but couldn’t speak.

Chen Shi’s tantrum, combined with the third house accusing the eldest, created a huge stir. The noise attracted all the neighbors, who came out and stood by the earthen wall of the Liu family’s house, watching the drama unfold.

As the crowd grew, Liu Jianjia became even more flustered. After all, this was his own mother. If he didn’t agree, wouldn’t he be seen as the unfilial son forcing his mother to seek death?

Liu Yu remained calm. She went to a corner of the yard, found a piece of old, tattered hemp rope, and handed it to Chen Shi: “Grandmother, here’s the rope! If you want to hang yourself, go ahead. There’s a crooked tree to the left when you leave! The feng shui is great!”

Everyone was shocked. They had never seen a granddaughter who would actively hand a rope to her grandmother to hang herself, and the granddaughter even seemed to support her grandmother doing so!

Chen Shi immediately stopped crying, staring at the rope that was handed to her. She opened her mouth but couldn’t say anything. She had been throwing a tantrum, not intending to actually commit suicide.

But Liu Yu wasn’t letting up: “Didn’t you say you were going to hang yourself? I’ve found the rope for you! Liu Ye, come help me give grandmother a hand!”
